Aaron Clauset, an SFI external professor, has received a National Science Foundation Early Career Development (CAREER) award.

NSF CAREER awards honor “junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context to the mission of their organizations,” according to the NSF. The NSF provides award winners with approximately $550,000 over five years to support their research.

Clauset, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Colorado Boulder, was an SFI Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow from 2006 to 2010.  His research focuses on developing new methods to understand the dynamics of complex social and biological networks, global statistical patterns of violence (wars and terrorism), social competition, and macroevolutionary processes. He frequently visits the Institute and lectures during SFI complexity courses and summer schools.

With the NSF CAREER award, Clauset plans to continue to develop advanced algorithms for automatically extracting and evaluating the hierarchical organization of real-world networks.
