THUNDER BAY -- The city police had 29 complaints made against them last year, with all but two found to be unsubstantiated.
The remaining complaints are still being looked into and Thunder Bay Police Service Chief J.P. Levesque said the majority of those complaints are for either excessive use of force or discreditable conduct.
“People have the right to complain when they have an interaction with a police officer or police service,” he said.
“If they’re not happy with the way that went, they have the right to complain. Twenty-nine times isn’t that bad given we respond to 50,000 calls a year.”
In 2013, there were also 29 complaints made against the police, but that’s down from 51 in 2012.
Public complaints for 2014 are as follows:
- Excessive force – 9
- Discreditable conduct – 2
- Inadequate investigation – 7
- Neglect of duty – 1
- Breach of confidence – 2
- Undefined – 2
- Service – 6
Resolution of 2014 complaints are as follows:
- No further action – 9
- Sustained – 0
- Informal resolution (or sustained in part) – 1
- Complaints not accepted (frivolous and vexatious, made in bad faith, or outside the time limit for filing a complaint) – 12
- Withdrawn – 5
- Continuing - 2
