One of Scotland’s largest universities found evidence of financial irregularities after investigations were triggered by whistleblowers.

The Scottish Funding Council was alerted to two allegations involving staff at Glasgow University last year. One complaint implicated Dame Anna Dominiczak, the head of its medical, veterinary and life sciences college, and another centred on alleged misappropriation of funds at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and Natural Environment.

The cases involved undisclosed sums of public money, but the council and the university have refused to provide further details, citing data protection. It is believed that Dominiczak, who sits on the board of Stratified Medicine Scotland (SMS), a publicly funded research body at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, was challenged after money from the body was used
