The Sun: Duchess Kate’s staff believe that Meghan is ‘copying’ Kate’s style

Kate William Cyprus

Last week, the Duchess of Cambridge wore honest-to-God trousers for a Christmas party-event at an RAF base in Cyprus. As soon as she stepped off the plane, people were shook about Kate’s trousers. It was the first time she had ever worn such a smart pantsuit with wide-leg trousers in all of her years of duchessing. Considering all of the sh-t that Meghan got for wearing trousers for several events in the past year, many people associated Meghan, not Kate, with trousers. The headlines about Kate’s Cyprus look were very much in that vein – British outlets said Kate was copying Meghan, or that Kate was getting style tips from Meghan, etc. Those stories must have upset Kate, because The Sun has “sources close to Kate” claiming that Kate has her nose out of joint about how much Meghan has been copying her.

We can reveal the Duchess of Cambridge’s staff believe she has another dedicated follower in Meghan Markle, whose wardrobe has started to resemble her sister-in-law’s.

A close source told The Sun on Sunday: “It hasn’t gone unnoticed by Kate’s circle. Everybody’s a bit baffled. Meghan was a style icon and knew what to wear. She appeared in glossy US mags all the time, walked the red carpet and always looked amazing. But since joining the royals she seems to be a bit lost. Instead of finding her feet she is copying what Kate wears more often than ever. Kate always looks stylish. She has been in the family for years and knows the protocol. So it makes sense that Meghan would look to her for inspiration. But Kate’s team are a bit miffed she’s going down the same route as her and think it’s inappropriate, as they’re not as close as they were. Meghan is doing her best. Her best friend Jessica Mulroney, a fashion stylist, gives all the advice she can. But Jessica is in Canada and isn’t used to royal etiquette.”

On Tuesday, Meghan attended a charity carol service in Chelsea alongside some of Harry’s closest friends. It was not just the double-breasted navy Mackage coat like the one Kate has worn on previous occasions that drew comparisons. It was because Meghan had worn it before — last year on her first royal visit with Harry after they announced their engagement.

Our source said: “That’s very Kate. She has a habit of wearing outfits more than once. It is a practice that would be frowned upon in Hollywood but one that suits the frugal instincts of the Queen. Now Meghan is doing it. It’s not gone unnoticed.”

Our source said: “Obviously they are going to wear the same designers from time to time. Kate has even told Meghan what to wear in the past. She’s not the kind of person to get annoyed that somebody likes what she wears. But her team think it’s strange there are now so many similarities.”

[From The Sun]

During the Royal Sussex South Pacific Tour in October, I noticed that Meghan wore a few ensembles that struck me as Kate-esque, especially the ensembles which featured large, unnecessary buttons (Kate’s Signature Look). This story would have worked better then, when the comparisons were sitting right there and people were already talking about “oh, Meg’s wearing a Kate-esque look.” But coming on the heels of Kate’s big trouser debut, it’s just funny. It’s also funny that Kate thinks she “owns” the whole “rewear” thing. They’re really getting Meghan coming and going these days – they criticize her for wearing new looks (when she’s only been duchessing for seven months and obviously still building her wardrobe) and then they’ll criticize her for “copying” Kate by rewearing pieces. And they’ll criticize her for copying Kate’s style, because obviously Kate owns ALL THE LEWKS.

Urgh, I think it the other way round.

    • jan90067 says:

What… they ran out of comparisons of Kate to Diana? So I guess now we bump it down a notch? I saw that article, OMG… Meg wore the same COLOR as Kate: COPYING!!! Meg wore a plaid coat… COPYING!! JFC!!!! This is really so beneath everyone.

Also, “That’s very Kate. She has a habit of wearing outfits more than once. It is a practice that would be frowned upon in Hollywood but one that suits the frugal instincts of the Queen”… Really? How often do we see TQ “repeat” an outfit (outside of that same horrible handbag (in white/black/gold) and her orthopedic shoes (black/beige). And yes, before you give me shit about her footwear, I *know* she’s 92 and can only wear a certain style now, but she has been wearing that same style for the last 30 years!).

EVERYONE “recycles” their clothes: it’s called WEARING THEM.

      • Chaine says:

My fave was the comparison showing Kate wearing a blue dress and then Meghan wearing a dress of an entireley different shade of blue. So copying.

    • MoxyLady says:

Being a woman in the BRF must such so hard. You have rules and demands so heavily on your attire. Hose, hens, heels- wear this color to this event. Wear hats to this one but nothing in this color. The queen doesn’t like blah blah blah. And then the whole world watches and poops all over your fashion choices and pits you against other royal women because you all are required to wear the exact same color scheme and so ended up looking somewhat similar. It’s like being in the worst sorority ever. “Please wear classy flats. Nothing with sparkle or shine. No patent leather. No leather either. Vegan shoes people. No pointed toe. No rounded toe. No Mary Jane style – we aren’t children. Nothing pastel or white. No reds or blacks. No browns or taupes. Colors cannot clash with your outfit or “pop”. Now onto hose….” VOMIT

      • Deedee says:

This is why you employ a professional stylist, so all you have to do is show up for the fittings and get dressed.

  2. Eric says:

Megan is definitely “smocking” something, right Emperor Zero?

    • Beth says:

Lol. His stupid typos crack me up. He wrote “smocking gun” twice in the same tweet, which made him look even stupider.

      • jan90067 says:

The stupidity knows no bounds, truly. He is only going to get worse as he feels more and more cornered.

  3. Jessica says:

They wear some of the same labels but a lot of high profile women have stylists who go with the trends. Meghan doesn’t appear to be copying Kate and vice-versa. Interesting how this is being written right after all the hoopla on Kate looking like Meghan in trousers. Her people clearly go to the Sun.

    • Royalwatcher says:

Yeah, this is some high-level projection going on right here. Wonder why Kate and her people feel so insecure about being compared to Meghan. #trousergate lol

    • Himmiefan says:

The commenters on the Dail Mail, before the bots took over, noted the same thing: they both wear the current styles from the current fashionable designers. So yeah, there’s going to be some similarities. I was pleased to see so many people calling the DM out for their latest nonsense and saying how they don’t believe the onslaught of negative articles.

  4. Loretta says:

LMAO Kate’s stuff is even more dumber than her

  5. babsjohnson says:

    War of the Buttons.

    • Ellaus says:

It will take place at a polo field wearing the wedges of doom and slightly big coats with crossbody bags. The winner gets to wear the most amount of buttons for ever.

This news are more unhinged every day that passes…. I would say that they have very distinct styles, but just this last week Kate was wearing an ensemble so very Meghanesque…

      I don’t know who writes this crap….

  6. Jessica says:

This is gross, stupid and ridiculous. If this is even remotely true, then I look down on Kate and her staff quite a bit. I suspect it’s not though.

  7. manda says:

I wish that the “Kate vs Meg/Meg vs Kate” narrative would stop. I don’t know if it’s true, I don’t really care, I think it is super tacky and just not what we need

Edited to add: if anyone is copying anyone, Kate’s green jacket and black pants are copying Harry’s green jacket and black pants, shown above. Hahaha! I just noticed the two photos one on top of the other and they are twinsies!

    • Cantgoogleme says:

      LOL Great comment Manda!

    • Megan says:

The tabs are so desperate for a cat fight they are yelling at Meghan for not spending money. They are really reaching low.

    • BengalCat😻 says:

^ This all day. It’s beneath this site to report on this crap.

    • Anitas says:

It’s so petty, isn’t it? There might have been some legit leaks but I think the tabs have also been dropping a lot of made up shit just because they can.

I think it’s entirely possible that they influenced each other. They both changed or adapted their styles recently. And I can’t say I’ve been thrilled with much of what Meghan’s been wearing lately, which is something she has in common with… hmmmm… Kate.

    • Nina says:

It is getting exhausting, isn’t it? I don’t even bother to read it. I’m longing for some nice stories, a bit of fluff. It’s Christmas season after all.

  8. Serphina says:

If this is true, I can only imagine what an ego Kate must have. Poor Pippa having to contend with that and now poor Megs. And all these stories about Megs making her cry, there are two sides to every story.

And style is out there for everyone. Why people are getting out of joint that it may be “copyied” is CRAZY to me.

    • ann carter says:

I will ONLY say that Kate and Will couldn’t be bothered before MM BURST onto the scene…MM has the IT factor, that indescribable sparkle that Kate wants so badly and finds elusive. Lucky thing she’ll be Queen or her life with MM and H stealing spotlight, would be most uncomfortable for her.

  9. Guest says:

    Hahahahhahahahahahahahaha 😂😂😂

  10. Lizzie says:

sorry but kate rarely looks stylish….if her camp is planting these stories they should know they’re making her look like an idiot.

  11. Beth says:

The British tabloids might want to believe or convince the readers to believe that there is jealousy, hate, and style copying between these two women, but maybe Kate and Meghan are friends and shop together and give style tips to each other.

  12. Cantgoogleme says:

    Whhhhaaaaatt??

She got embarrassed they caught her out on the olive getup and she’s trying to turn it around to save face.

Cambridges are officially out of control!

  13. Meganbot2000 says:

So if she abides by protocol she’s copying Kate, if she doesn’t she’s thumbing her nose at the firm and being rude.

If she wears clothes more than once she’s copying Kate, if she doesn’t she’s being a spendthrift.

Basically if she does anything wrong, she’s slammed, but if she does anything right she’s slammed for copying.

  14. shirurusu says:

I’m not mad about most of Meghan’s outfits but that coat in the walking photo is really cute! That’s all I’ve got.

  15. Laur says:

This is from the Sun, therefore it’s 100% fictitious. The Sun barely even passes for a tabloid it’s that bad. People need to stop paying attention to Sun stories.

Also lol at the whole line about re-wearing clothes more than once being very Kate. No, that’s what 100% of the human population does. This is how you can tell this is made up nonsense.

    • Mego says:

Good point! In NA it would be like quoting the National Inquirer or the Globe. No one pays attention to those tabloids here.

    • Al says:

If anything, re-wearing clothes and being in the royal family is very Ann, so maybe if anyone’s copying, it’s Kate. 🙂

  16. Belluga says:

Even Kate’s fans were saying the trouser look was all Meghan.

Trying to turn it around now when the big deal before was that Meghan was forging her own fashion path (protocol!!1!) looks a bit pathetic.

  17. Royalwatcher says:

    Bahahahaha*catchesbreath*hahahaha

This article is hilarious. Meghan copying Kate by re-wearing a coat…when she wasn’t even planning to be photographed!! Wow, Meghan must be about to release her charity list or some other project to have the knives being thrown at such a fast and furious pace. Someone *coughCambridgescough* is mighty nervous about a hardworking Duchess of Sussex.

And, yeah, Meghan just cannot win. Criticized for wearing new clothes and then also criticized for wearing repeats (of which she already wore several times during the big tour). Where are all the “thrifty Duchess Meghan” articles?! Or is that only reserved for Saint Kate?

Can we please just get the Sussexes their own separate admin and PR staff and they can just launch their own projects and work at their own pace without having to worry about upsetting the delicate sensibilities of the lazy Cambridges?!

    • RealityLover says:

Can you list all of the events Meghan has done since her wedding, taking out the tour please? it’s remarkable at how seldom she has worked.

      • Olenna says:

Don’t understand your comment. How is it remarkable? She’s married to the 6th in line–the spare. Did you have expectations for her workload that she didn’t meet? Who/what has set the benchmark for her workload?

      • Natalie S says:

Nope. I actually counted at one point because someone else wanted the tour taken out and then Meghan’s workload compared to Kate’s. Meghan’s at about 25 appearances or a bit higher since the wedding. The engagement number would be higher than that.

Add in the tour and we’re at slightly over an appearance a week which is good for someone who in a little over a year, moved to a different country, got married, is pregnant and is setting up her home and her office staff and is still choosing her charities. That’s not counting all the behind the scenes work on the Hub cookbook.

      • harla says:

Why not count the pre-wedding numbers as well? Meghan attended quite a few events before the big day and I think those should count too and yes, count Kate’s pre-wedding numbers as well. Why take out the tour numbers?

  18. Kristy says:

    Poor insecure Waity!

  19. Nev says:

Meghan HAS style. Kate doesn’t. Cmon now.

    • Sara says:

Right???? Kate always looks boring and not very fashionable. She’s had YEARS of sausage curls jeggings, wedges and flared skirts. Kate is pretty but not beautiful, plus she looks half starved. Not matter how thin she is she’ll always have the flat but square figure.

Megan is a true beauty and has amazing style. She also has a better figure. Megan looks healthier and not like she lives on toast and air. Megan’s looks have been knocking it out of the park.

Kate is JUST NOW starting to update her hair and step out of her little style box. But Megan is copying her? Yeah right!

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Kate goes between dressing like a girl just entering college and a middle aged woman. I really can’t see Meghan copying her by putting ribbons in her hair.

The only member of the Middleton family that has any style is Carole – she dresses well for her age.

    • Natalie S says:

To be fair, they both need to work on their style. Kate is a dated 80s era Sloane Ranger through and through with her headbands and twee touches. Meghan needs a UK based stylist who can bring some extra polish and visual interest to her minimalist aesthetic.

  20. Kittycat says:

Like Meghan is copying Kate by getting pregnant.

  21. Digital Unicorn says:

    Hahahaha – that’s funny.

Yeah, GF is feeling the competition from Meghan who really has hit the ground running and was prepared for the role.

  22. CairinaCat says:

I really hope this is a fake story, if it’s real Kate and her people are morons

  23. gingersnaps says:

If Meghan were copying waity, then she would have flash her bits by now and wearing jeggings, wedges, doily lace type dresses and lots of buttons.

  24. Josie says:

This wasn’t written by Emily Andrews, who does have sources (however embellished the reporting is). “A close source” likely equals “the Sun staff, sitting around the conference table tossing around new article ideas.”

I’m pretty sure this is an online-only story, which is often a giveaway for “yeah, we had to write SOMETHING” today.

  25. Franny Days says:

I don’t believe the ridiculous diva Meghan stories and I don’t believe this ridiculous Kate story either. I can’t be the only one not buying any of this, right? Anyone?

    • Beth says:

You’re not alone. I don’t buy it either, and it gets more ridiculous every day.

    • arsesds73 says:

I agree, I don’t buy this either. I don’t buy the diva stories or this Kate story. They are just milking it.

    • Anitas says:

No, it’s obvious this is made up shit, along with most of these stories. The tabloids see nobody’s shutting this type of crap down so they milk it for all it’s worth.

  26. Amelie says:

Out of all the mean stories to come out in the last few weeks (and I only read about them here I don’t go looking for them because mainstream media ignores this kind of stuff which is what I mostly read), this is just.the.stupidest. Also funniest because it sounds so stupid. I don’t believe it for a second due to all the ridiculous quotes. Kate is not stylish all the time, it’s usually hit or miss. Kate does not own the trademark on double breasted coats and she is not the only female member of the BRF to rewear outfits. Pretty sure the Queen, Princess Anne, and Sophie have all done that at some point.

I do think Meghan is more stylish than Kate though I don’t love all her outfits. And if this really does bother Kate, she can’t be stupid. She is not known for wearing slacks and she has to be really dim if she didn’t think people would think she got inspired by Meghan to go past her comfort zone of skirts/dresses/coatdresses. That’s all I’ve got!

  27. HK9 says:

    This is so f-king ridiculous.

  28. L84Tea says:

Come on now. This is just beyond ridiculous now. When are the BRF going to do something to put this nonsense to a rest?

  29. Cee says:

Great PR! Kate’s coming across as an insecure, immature and downright nasty woman.
This has got to stop. I’ve always considered William and Kate lazy and entitled. Now I just think they’re downright nasty and toxic. So yeah, great PR campaign, has worked out very well.

  30. Heather says:

These people have to make up their minds. First it was Meghan wasn’t dressing like Kate and she absolutely should take tips. Now it’s she’s copying Kate. First it was they were BFFs. Then it was Kate offered to help but Meghan shrugged her off. now it’s Kate was too busy being a mom and future queen consort to bother advising Meghan. Though I think we’re back to Meghan making Kate cry or something. I’m getting whiplash.

  31. Lisa says:

So ridiculous. I am embarassed for Kate if this is true.

  32. Snap Happy says:

I didn’t think crap was coming from the Cambridges until this. And I always thought the outfit she wore To the wedding was fishy. She had to know people were going to talk about Charlotte’s baptism. If anyone is playing clothes games, it’s Kate.

    • Ahoyoy says:

This. “Primrose yellow”, my foot. She is as sad and tacky as everyone has always said. And she is so simple that she doesn’t even comprehend that it made her look small and petty-reflecting poor on her rather than Meghan.

I saw this headline and shook my head. These fools are the most inept mean girls.

      • Rosie says:

To my eyes it looked like pale yellow, especially next to Meghan’s very white dress. If you look at the family photo taken afterwards Kate, Camilla and Doria are all in very soft colours. The Queen was as toned down as she would go. They all looked beautiful with the flowers and Meghan stood out beautifully in her bright white dress. I’m sure they all co-ordinated. If Kate had worn a bright colour, then that would have been a bitch move. The overall look was subtle and sophisticated which is Meghan’s style. Look again at the wedding photo, Kate blends into the background.

  33. Digital Unicorn says:

This is just beyond embarrassing for the RF now – is there an adult anywhere in any of the press offices who can step in and shut this down!

As I said before, regardless if any of these stories are true its obvious that the Cambridges are allowing the press to use them to tear Meghan down – considering how precious they are over their image the fact they they haven’t shut it down tells you more than these stories do.

Where there’s smoke there is fire – personally I think there is an element of truth in these stories. William doesn’t like Meghan and that won’t change, Kate is threatened by her as Meghan highlights her failings at Duchessing and am sure the RF have wondered about her and maybe had concerns about her family etc.. But you can’t deny Harry loves her and she him and that she is willing to work at the family trade – which will go a long way with some of the older members who might want to retire. All this will do is make Harry more protective of her and continue to drive a wedge between him and anyone who interferes in their relationship, which could damage the RF in the long term if not dealt with.

    • mackypooh says:

Yes. I hope this barrage of nasty stories about Meghan comes back to bite the Cambridges. Meghan genuinely wants to do humanitarian work and in less than a year has engaged diverse causes in not only England but the Commonwealth—she DOES project a more active touch (while getting married and pregnant!) Kate’s posse is in mean girl overdrive.

I had no negative option of Kate before all this but after these few weeks? Will and Kate are big babies about positive attention on anyone else.

Insecurity even when you have the world at your feet as the future king and queen of the U.K.? Bad leadership. Show you are a leader by being cool, intelligent and brave. Not petty and jealous.

    • Enn says:

But isn’t the motto “never complain, never explain”? I thought that’s why the BRF never dignifies these tales with a response.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Normally it is but when it threatens the image of the whole family – as this does -then BP normally steps in and puts a stop to it. TQ is going to have to intervene as this is not showing any signs of stopping.

    • TheOriginalMia says:

Well said, Digital Unicorn. This is embarrassing for the BRF, especially when there was so much goodwill for them after the wedding. They look weak and complicit. Someone, preferably Charles or the Queen, needs to shut this down. Christmas is going to be awkward.

  34. Cynthia Perry says:

If I was a Brit, this would so piss me off. My tax $$$ are paying for these ridiculous people to have petty cat fights? I’m so sick of them. The Queen needs to put them all in a time out.

  35. Maddie says:

Someone hurry up and tell Princess Anne and Sophie that they’re biting the Duchess’ style when they’re rewearing clothes. 🙄

  36. Rosie says:

Please, surely nobody believes this rubbish has been ‘leaked’ by KP. It’s like those platform games or cat food. It’s all the same crap underneath just tweaked to look different. The tabloids are running with a theme, Kate v Meghan and they will twist it this way & that each day to get people clicking on the articles. Clicks = money. The papers & magazines always sold more with Diana on the cover. Then they had (in the UK) the Beckhams and other celebs to fill that gap. Now they have hit headline goldmine Kate V Meghan the never ending story. I hope K&M are sitting down having a cup of tea laughing their heads off about this.

    • Vi says:

“Please, surely nobody believes this rubbish has been ‘leaked’ by KP. ”
Are you reading the comments? This story IS a leak coming from Kate’s camp and it’s the definitive proof that William and Kate are nasty and toxic and that Kate is jealous of Meghan’s fantastic wide leg trousers and style. LOL

  37. TheOriginalMia says:

Meghan isn’t dressing like artistocratic ladies from the 1940s, so how can she be copying Kate’s style? Kate is cosplaying what she thinks a future queen should wear. Same thing she did with her new accent. She’s more royal than the royal. Sans a few buttons and Kate-like suits, Meghan has been wearing what she likes to wear, not her Suits character. This is a laughable claim and proves the DoC may be a little concerned about the DoS’s popularity.

  38. Bluthfan says:

Lol – no. Meghan doesn’t dress like a teenager or a frumpy 50 year old.

  39. Team Meaghan says:

Neither woman can win & they probably know it.
They can’t wear the same color, or one of them is copying the other.
They can’t wear the same style, even though the palace stylists dictate what they can/can’t wear.
They can’t wear the same outfit too much, or the fashionistas will denigrate them.
They can’t wear too many new clothes, or they’re wasting taxpayer money.
If they accidentally wear the same color or a similar style within a few days of the other, it’s some sort of effort to deliberately upstage, copy, single-white-female the other.

  40. TheOtherSam says:

These royal staffers who are sources must be the silliest and most immature people on Earth. Is this what they sit around and think about all day? Ridiculous. These two women dress nothing alike, most of the time (similarities with buttons and tailored pants aside). And that is fine, they are two separate people with separate personalities, and their style reflects that.

It’s been my wish that Meghan gets herself a top-notch tailor, so her clothes fit like Kate’s do (the one thing Kate gets right). When/if this happens, will it be because of Kate? Oh please.

  41. Michel says:

Oh. Em. Gee. Stop the insanity!

  42. zia says:

    Kate is SO INSECURE!

  43. Mego says:

So Kate makes an appearance in an outfit that is clearly Meghan’s style and The Sun hacks come up with this. Are they deliberately trolling now or is Carole feeding them?

  44. Jen says:

Meghan is such a diva that she time traveled to copy Kate’s trouser look.

  45. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Kate usually dresses like Barbara Bush Sr., and ends up looking 50 years old. Or, she goes in the opposite direction and dresses like a teenager, and ends up looking like a 50-year old who’s cosplaying as a teenager. Whereas, I think Meghan’s style is more “Kennedy” than Bush.

  46. maddie says:

just saw a pic of megan at the fashion awards – gorge!

  47. Jennie says:

I find Kate’s style off. The jeggings with too tight/short top or jacket… the wedges… the awkward length of her dresses (which are too floaty often). No comparison to each other. And that I’ve never seen a photo of Kate ( which doesn’t mean there isn’t one) wearing a full trouser, certainly makes it look like she’s the one doing the copying. Megan has much more style and grace.

  48. Beebee says:

Wow if you look at the comparisons in the sun it literally is similiar colours with a coat, dress, ect. If anything they just highlighted how different they are with the same shade. Meghan looks young and fresh and Kate looks matronly and not in a good way…also some photos are way older then like 3 years.

  49. guest says:

I think they might have fudged the due date on purpose. Meghan looks like she is 6/7 months pregnant. No way is she only around 5 months along. I saw the Instagram type picture Meghan posed for at the awards lol. Someone needs to remind her that she’s a Royal now, not a celebrity. She looks absolutely gorgeous tho. Her best look as a royal yet! She has more misses than hits.. but this look (fashion awards) is stunning from head to toe.
