Temperatures broke 60 degrees in several Massachusetts towns Wednesday, giving residents a brief glimpse of spring before winter returns with snowfall and temperatures dropping below normal this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

“A lot of Eastern Massachusetts away from the coast is in the low 60s as of 3 p.m. and still warming,” said Benjamin Sipprell, a weather service meteorologist.

Framingham, Taunton, Norfolk, Enfield, and Attleboro were among the places that broke the 60-degree barrier. These values are above normal, which is 44 degrees this time of year, Sipprell said.

Boston hit 57 degrees at 2 p.m. with a chance for higher temperatures later in the late afternoon, Sipprell said. The last time it was this warm was Christmas Day, when temperatures reached 59 degrees in the city.

The warmth won’t last for long, though, as temperatures are expected to drop to the upper 20s Wednesday night.

Temperatures Thursday will crest in the upper 30s and drop to the teens at night, forecasters said. Friday will be similarly cold, with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the 20s.

A storm arriving overnight Friday into Saturday will leave some snow on the ground before changing to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain, and ending as rain, forecasters said.

Boston may see 1 to 2 inches of snow, which could be just enough to break the record for snowiest winter, said Bill Simpson, a weather service meteorologist. Areas north of the Massachusetts Turnpike will see greater accumulations. In a discussion posted on the Internet, forecasters said some areas could see up to 3 inches.

The storm is expected to end as rain all day Saturday, possibly continuing into the early hours Sunday, forecasters said. There is also a chance for some rain and snow showers Sunday afternoon into the night.

Temperatures Saturday will rise to the upper 30s and dip to the lower 30s at night. Sunday will see highs in the upper 30s and lows in the mid-20s, forecasters said.

“We’ll be below normal for the foreseeable future until next Tuesday or so,” Simpson said.

Sunshine Monday will warm temperatures slightly into the low 40s, before they drop to the upper 20s at night.

Snow showers Monday night into Tuesday may bring a light coating of 1 to 2 inches across the state, Simpson said.
