Fiction through Time and Place (Part II) with Fabienne Josaphat

Take a look at historical fiction using elements of place, time, and cultural, political, and socio-economical context for developing fiction. Class will involve a discussion of setting, writing exercises and reading assignments, and workshop of novel chapters, short stories and or flash fiction. This six-week course focuses on writing and workshop of novels and short stories in the genre of historical fiction. The first week of the course will focus on understanding concepts of historical fiction, and fiction in general. Emphasis will be placed on setting. Students will then produce a synopsis and outline of the story they intend to workshop. Students will also produce a timeline of their piece, and the rest of the course will be focused on workshopping their short stories or chapters of larger works. We will focus on the historical past, the era, the place. Students will be expected to produce physical copies of their workshop pieces for fellow classmates. Therefore, access to a printer and internet is essential. Writers of all levels are welcome to register.

Fabienne Josaphat was born in Haiti and graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. She writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as screenplays. Her first novel, Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, was released with Unnamed Press in February 2016. She lives in Miami.
