ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Less than two years after a local teen died at a foam party another one is planned for Friday night on city property.

The Neon Paint and Foam Tour which boasts loud music, flashing lights and lots of foam took over Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park Friday morning.

“It’s just like a huge bubble bath,” said Neon Paint and Foam Tour Head of Promotions Antonio Hernandez.

Hernandez says the event is for just teens between the ages of 13 and 19 and is supposed to be a place for them to have safe, clean fun.

“We are trying to help the community in trying to give the kids some place to go,” he said.

But how safe is a foam party where teens dressed in bikinis get doused in bubbles? High schoolers that KRQE News 13 talked to on Friday said foam parties are usually associated with sex, drugs and booze.

“I just think of a bunch of teenagers hanging out without supervision,” said 15-year-old Amanda Cook.

“I feel like they are probably going to be doing drugs,” said sophomore Mason Rivara.

In 2013, 14-year-old Hanna Bruch died of a drug dose after she attended a foam party at the state fairgrounds.

News 13 wanted to know why the city thought it would be a good idea to allow a foam party on its property.

“That’s a whole different scene and that’s a whole different vibe,” said Hernandez. “Over here, we have taken every precaution and we have city approval and we have done everything we can to make this a safe, clean and fun environment.”

The tour has increased security. There will be at lease six guards on duty at all times. Everyone who attends the party will be patted down and no backpacks or cameras will be allowed into the event.

“When everything is going on we have the same security group moving around making sure they don’t see anything suspicious,” said Hernandez.

Hernandez says if security sees anything suspicious the kids involved will immediately be kicked out.

The goes from 6 to 10 pm. The promoters said ending early is another safety precaution.

The city said it’s worked with the Neon and Foam Tour promoters before and have never had any problems with them.

If everything goes well, the tour said it wants to throw foam parties all over New Mexico including in Roswell, Carlsbad and Silver City.
