She might have gotten away with the crime had it not been for one thing: She left her child at the scene.
A Florida woman left her 3-year-old daughter behind in a liquor store after she and her boyfriend fled following a gunfight, the Sun Sentinel reported.
Stefanie Stern, 28, was arrested Tuesday and faces charges of child neglect and tampering with evidence.
Stern and her boyfriend, Reginald Lee, 34, were in a Fort Lauderdale liquor store on Dec. 22 when Lee started arguing with another customer, police said.
Lee pulled out a gun and chased the customer out of the store. When he returned, he fumbled with his pants and shot himself in the leg.
Lee gave his gun to Stern and the callous couple ran to an alley to hide the gun, leaving Lee’s daughter in the store.
When police found the couple, Lee told them he had been shot by a stranger, and Stern said she didn’t see what happened.
Detectives later reviewed surveillance footage and saw Lee shooting himself and the couple running away from the girl.
Lee was not charged.
The daughter, whose name hasn’t been released, is now in protective custody.
