North Central State rolls out new tuition plan

Staff report

MANSFIELD – The Board of Trustees of North Central State College voted unanimously at their March 25 meeting to approve a new tiered tuition plan beginning with the summer semester.

In the plan, tuition will increase to $165 per credit hour for students taking one to 11 credit hours each term. For any student taking 12 to 15 credit hours, with 12 credit hours or more per semester being "full-time," the cost will be a flat rate of $1,830.60, according to a news release from the college.

That means that students taking four, 3-hour courses, tuition will be $1,830.60 and they could take another 3-hour class without additional charge. A student taking two, 4-hour and two, 3-hour courses would also pay $1,830.60.

Full-time students taking classes for the entire year will be charged $3,661.20 ($1,830.60 x 2) for classes taken in fall and spring semesters. This amount can be fully satisfied for students who receive 100 percent Pell funding, which currently provides $5,775.

Grants and scholarships from NC State institutionally, from the NC State Foundation, and from many outside sources reduce the cost that many students pay.

This change will allow students to earn more credit for less money than before.

For a student who takes more than 15 credit hours, the cost will be the base rate of $1,830.60 plus $165 for each credit hour above 15 credit hours.

Charges for books, lab fees and supply are additional.

To encourage student success and completion, new students and students returning to college after a 12-month absence who enroll full-time for the fall semester will be eligible for a tuition guarantee for the next four years. Tuition rates for these students will remain frozen as long as they continue to pursue their degree and maintain full-time enrollment.

Students accepting the Tuition Guarantee will be asked to sign an agreement which explains these guidelines, according to the college.
