The City of Toronto is under an extreme cold weather alert, bringing the city's total to 39 alerts in 2015.

A week in to spring and 86 days before summer, Environment Canada is predicting the temperature will drop to -12 C overnight on Friday.

With the wind chill, the temperature will feel more like -20, the weather agency predicts. The average temperature for this time of year is 4 C.

It was -2 C, but felt like -8 with the wind, as of 8 a.m. on Friday.

As a result of what Environment Canada calls an "abnormal temperature trend," the city's medical officer of health issued an extreme cold weather alert on Friday morning, which remains in effect until further notice.

So far 39 alerts have been called this year. Based on data from the last 10 years, the City of Toronto calls an average of 16 alerts per year.

During an extreme cold weather alert, residents of the city are asked to check up on vulnerable friends, neighbours and family members. The homeless, elderly, infants and those with pre-existing heart conditions are most at risk during cold weather.
