Maryland Day: 7 Things to Love About Maryland

Marylanders share what they love the most about the Free State in honor of Maryland Day.

Maryland Day, observed each year on March 25, celebrates the history and heritage of the Free State. On this day in 1634, the first English settlers landed in Maryland at St. Clement’s Island.

Commemorate the historical holiday by showing off your Maryland state pride. Enjoy crab cakes for lunch, pour Old Bay seasoning on tonight’s dinner or don your lucky Baltimore Ravens jersey to work.

We asked Patch readers what they love the most about Maryland. Here’s what they had to say:

1. Crabs, steamed crabs, crab cakes, etc.

The number one answer from Patch readers doesn’t come as a surprise. Maryland is known for its authentic seafood delicacy, steamed or sauteed, as a cake or in a soup, dusted with Old Bay seasoning and cooked to perfection.

2. The ocean, the beach and the bay

From the busy boardwalk of Ocean City to the scattered beaches on the Eastern Shore, Marylanders know how to have fun in the sun.

3. The awesome Maryland state flag

Marylanders wave their flag loud and proud. You may not be able to draw it yourself, but we all can agree that the unique design may be one of the coolest among the 50 states.

4. Old Bay and its savory goodness

Produced in the Chesapeake Bay area, Old Bay Seasoning is a staple in Maryland kitchens. It’s perfectly acceptable to pour Old Bay on your crabs, fries, eggs, corn on the cob and just about everything in between. Your out-of-state friends just don’t understand.

5. The friendly people

Whether you are trying to reach the cereal box on the top shelf of the grocery store or renew your license at the DMV, someone is always there to help you.

6. An ice cold Natty Boh

First brewed in Baltimore, National Bohemian has remained a favorite among local beer drinkers. The Bohemian-style beverage, paired with one-eyed mascot Mr. Boh, is growing a reputation as the “official” beer of Baltimore.

7. The history of Maryland

One of the original 13 colonies, Maryland is home to countless historical events, museums and attractions. From the first European settlers in 1634 (of which Maryland Day commemorates), to the creation of “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the Battle of Baltimore, the state’s history books are lengthy, but fascinating.
