Discover the real Downton Abbey

Highclere, Hampshire

Re-enact your favourite scenes from the much-loved period drama at Highclere Castle before retiring to London Lodge, a Georgian Grade II-listed gatehouse on-site.

With all that delicious drama played out in such a grandiose setting, it’s no wonder Downton Abbey has become an international TV hit. But along with all its well-known characters, there’s another star that deserves your attention, Highclere Castle in Hampshire aka Downton Abbey.

Designed by Charles Barry – the same architect who constructed the Houses of Parliament and stately homes such as Bowood House and Harewood House – it’s been home to the Carnarvon family since 1679.

Not only can you explore the stately home and act out your favourite scenes, you can bring your PJs for a sleepover too. For the first time in its 221-year history, Highclere Castle is offering the chance to stay overnight in a Georgian Grade II-listed gatehouse known as London Lodge. Renovated into two separate lodges, the self-catering accommodation is on either side of the heavy iron gates at the top of the sweeping mile-long driveway.
