Why this petition matters

Started by Preservation Detroit

The Park Avenue and Eddystone Hotels are all that remain of a vibrant mid-1920s nightlife district north of downtown Detroit. Together, these two high-rises contribute authentic urban character to the lower Cass Corridor. Redeveloping them would also have a positive economic impact in a neighborhood where real estate demand is already on the rise. And because both hotels are on the National Register of Historic Places, federal tax incentives are available for their rehabilitation.

With a new hockey arena under development, however, the fate of these historic buildings is uncertain. Recently, the Detroit Free Press reported that a "deal" might be in the works to redevelop the Eddystone and demolish the Park Avenue.

Why not keep both? They're better together. They were built at the same time, by the same architect, and they both have strong architectural character. They're both historically protected. And what's more, the City of Detroit has supported this project with hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes and a sweetheart deal on the land. Is saving two buildings so much to ask?

Tell the City of Detroit:

  • Save the Park Avenue AND the Eddystone Hotel! They're better together.
  • Follow due process for historic buildings! No backroom deals -- proposed demolition of either building must go to the Historic District Commission, and the Commission's decision must be respected.
  • Keep the new arena district real! Incorporating historic buildings into the proposed development will create a more authentic arena district. If Olympia doesn't want to redevelop the hotels, someone else will!
