The Best Places to Retire Outside of the US

If you're willing to move outside of the US, you could enjoy a more comfortable retirement and keep more of your money, thanks to other cities' health care systems and lower cost of living. This list highlights seven places particularly friendly to English-speaking retirees.

These places were chosen by the experts over at Live and Invest Overseas for their low cost, climate, health care, infrastructure, safety, and overall community and friendliness towards American retirees and described at MainStreet.

The seven places:

  • Medellin, Colombia

  • Pau, France

  • Dumaguete, Phillippines

  • Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • George Town, Malaysia

  • Cuenca, Ecuador

  • Algarve region, Portugal

There are pros and cons to all cities, of course. Pau isn't exactly cheap, with a $1,900 average cost of living per month, but it has universal health care and lots of English speakers and Western amenities. Dumaguete's average temperature is in the 90s, but cost of living is around $920 a month and you live on a tropical island.
