Welcome to Summerland - Message from the Mayor Summerland is a friendly community nestled in the Okanagan Valley that offers beautiful beaches, scenic vineyards and orchards, and magnificent mountains. Our charming town has many unique shops and wonderful restaurants, wineries, and fruit stands for all to enjoy. The hot summer months are spent relaxing on our sandy beaches, golfing at one of our fabulous golf courses, or tasting wine at one of our many wineries. Children love the water park and man’s best friend loves the Doggie Beach. Biking, hiking, fishing, camping and water activities are endless here. During the winter months you may want to visit one of the nearby internationally recognized ski resorts. Ice fishing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, skating, curling and hockey are just a few winter pastimes to partake in. Summerland hosts some very popular events throughout the year including Action Festival in June for our sports enthusiasts,

the Fall Fair in September which has been showcasing our agricultural and horticultural achievements for over 100 years, and the Festival of Lights which kicks off the holiday season at the end of November. Summerland has a vibrant cultural life and is home to many gifted artists. We would love to share some of our great history with you. Where else can you board an original steam train and take a picturesque ride on a historic railway? Welcome to Summerland! We know you will enjoy all that Summerland has to offer. Mayor Peter F. Waterman

Welcome to Bottleneck Drive Summerland enjoys some of the best growing conditions in the Okanagan, with hilly terrain, extensive sun, and soil enriched with unique properties stemming from our region’s volcanic past. And our iconic Bottleneck Drive wine route provides choice and quality around every bend. A day spent at one of Summerland’s beautiful wineries is never typical. At one a couple sips rosé on a wide terrace overlooking Okanagan Lake, while at another a dozen women on a girls’ holiday line up to sample ice wine from tiny chocolate cups. With 15 wineries (including one specializing in fruit wine, and a new cider company) there is something for every taste. Fine wine is best enjoyed with great food, and many of our wineries offer thoughtfully paired dishes to compliment the perfect glass of red or white. Make space on your calendar for Bottleneck Drive events throughout the year. Spend a summer

evening with a glass of pinot noir and live jazz music, and don’t miss the spectacle of vineyards adorned with lights during the annual Light up the Vines Festival in November. The Local’s Pick Classic Style: Let yourself be whisked from winery to winery in a 1963 white Cadillac convertible from the Nixdorf Classic Car Museum. Adventurers: Hit the winery route on your bicycle and earn your wine and chocolate samples. Foodies: Pick a winery and call ahead to ask about food pairings. Our wine makers are passionate about creating the best atmosphere for your taste buds. Follow @TourSummerland and @BottleneckDrive on Twitter for updates on Summerland winery events.

Dining Our abundant local produce and talented chefs make Summerland a food lover’s paradise.

Darren Robinson/TOTA/SCC

Darren Robinson/TOTA/SCC

Darren Robinson/TOTA/SCC

Taste of Summerland Slow food is part of the Summerland lifestyle; like everything else, we take our time over our meals. Summerland chefs truly have the pick of the crop for their ingredients, with access to the best produce in the Okanagan valley, much of it grown right here in our community. Take a trip to a winery restaurant overlooking the vineyards, then stop off at one of the amazing fruit stands in the area for your delicious double scoop of ice cream for dessert. Whether it’s a hearty breakfast at a local bistro to start off your day of exploring, or fine dining on the shores of Okanagan Lake, there is always something to tempt your taste buds and keep you coming back for seconds. Though we are known for our incredible wineries, there is one other beverage that residents love just as much: coffee. Luckily, Summerland is blessed with two local artisan coffee roasters that provide fresh coffee beans to our many cafes. Head to one of the coffee houses in town for a shot of espresso or a tall,

frothy latte to see how spoiled we are. You can even take a bag or two home with you, so you can wake up and imagine you’re still here. If you’re looking for something a little more unique for your dining experience, we encourage you to push the boat out-literally. Hire a pontoon boat and relax while our local “extreme caterer” prepares you a fabulous meal on deck. No matter what you choose, we want you to take your time. Savour the views, the company and all of those distinctive Summerland flavours. The Local’s Pick Summer Patio hopping. Head to the lakeshore for brunch, lounge at a winery bistro in the afternoon, and choose downtown for an evening family meal. Do breakfast right. Whether it’s Saturday eggs benny or a fresh organic croissant, we love our mornings, especially with extra coffee.

Get on Board You are standing on the railway platform just as a plume of steam erupts from the 3716 “Spirit of Summerland” engine, accompanied by its signature whistle. The conductor tips his hat and shows you to your seat in the open air carriage. As the train begins to move, snaking along the hillside of Prairie Valley, you feel whisked away to the pioneering past. Holding a ticket for the Kettle Valley Steam Railway is like carrying a passport to the past. Gaze out the window at the passing orchards, vineyards and geological formations, before arriving at the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge where your view descends 238 feet to the canyon floor below. If you’re brave enough to sign up for the Great Train Robbery, be prepared for gunslingers on horses to surround the train and demand your fortune. Nothing beats the view of the steam train on the trestle bridge other than the one from Summerland’s Ornamental Gardens. Created by Agriculture Canada in 1916, this 16-acre public garden is located on the grounds of the Pacific Agri-Food

Research Centre. Impeccably maintained by the Friends of the Gardens Society, this oasis is perfect for a relaxing stroll, informative garden tour or the loveliest outdoor wedding. No visit to Summerland is complete without a stop at Summerland Sweets where they’ve been making delicious fruit-based products since the 1950’s. The scent of homemade waffle cones envelopes you as soon as you open the door. Stock up on their jams, jellies, syrups and fruit wines, before grabbing a triple scoop and heading to the patio. Car lovers won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Okanagan’s only classic car showroom at Nixdorf Classic Car Museum, and nature enthusiasts can tour the Summerland Trout Hatchery and learn the best places to fish in the area. You can even create a personal reminder of Summerland by following the Bead Trail. Add a bracelet charm from each location you visit and take Summerland with you wherever you go.

Arts & Culture The rich landscape that attracted the first settlers continues to inspire Summerland’s artists.

Sophia Jackson/TOTA/SCC

Sophia Jackson/TOTA/SCC

Kelly Funk/TOTA/SCC

Okanagan Inspired At the Summerland Museum on Wharton Street, Summerland’s history is expertly woven through the tapestry of the South Okanagan’s past. You’ll learn how Okanagan First Nations first inhabited the area around Summerland more than 6,000 years ago, and how the natural beauty and opportunity later drew settlers and fur traders to the region. Discover the fascinating way those early pioneers lived and how the expansion of BC railroads and the Kettle Valley Steam Railway steered Summerland into the new century. Summerland’s story continues with the painted murals that adorn our downtown buildings. Tales of our agricultural history and fur trading past are displayed throughout the downtown core, a reminder of our beginnings and how far we have come. Just as wine touring has become a popular pastime, touring Summerland’s many art studios is a great way to add a dose of creativity to your visit. Drive our winding roads to meet with a wood carver, spend time with a clothing designer, chat with a watercolorist and find a new favorite piece from a local potter.

Many of our studios are open year-round with many more open by appointment. In September, local artists partner with Bottleneck Drive wineries for DeVine Arts - a weekend-long event at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. At the heart of Summerland’s art scene is the Summerland Community Arts Centre located downtown on Main Street. The Art Gallery hosts regularly changing shows of BC artists, and an extensive Summer Arts Program for children from 3-13 years. If you’re visiting Summerland in the early spring, take part in the annual tradition of painting one of the banners that will be hung around the community from May to October, a great opportunity to leave a small legacy of your visit. From literary events to art show openings, concerts to philosophers’ cafes, and the annual Arts and Culture Week celebration, Summerland has no shortage of cultural events to choose from.

Fresh is Best If you’ve ever bought cherries at the grocery store, you’re already connected to Summerland. The world’s most popular cherry variety, known as the Sweetheart, was developed in Summerland at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (PARC). PARC’s ongoing research puts Summerland at the cutting edge of agri-technology. Simply put, we take knowing where your food comes from to a whole new level. We encourage you to visit our local fruit markets to start your taste of Summerland tour. With all of the fantastic market choices, remember to bring your appetite. We guarantee you’ll need it!

Pick Like a Local U-Pick: Dickinson Farm was founded more than 100 years ago and is a destination of choice for cherry lovers. You can also fill your buckets at Summerland Strawberry Farm. When autumn hits, follow the locals to the Apple Barn to stock up for pies and apple sauce. Weigh your own apples and leave the money in the bucket. Plan your evening menu around the fresh fruit and vegetables at Summerland’s weekly Farmers’ Market, held every Tuesday throughout the summer. Stop by the Visitor Centre to find out what’s in season, or tweet us @TourSummerland.

Hiking & Biking Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who pauses for picnics, Summerland will get you climbing to new heights.

You’re on the Right Trail Standing 845 metres above the town like a beacon, the ancient face of Giant’s Head Mountain has been surveying its surroundings for thousands of years. Walk through the iron gates of Giant’s Head Mountain park to begin your ascent to the summit of Summerland’s most distinctive landmark. You can choose to take the steep Confederation trail, or the more relaxing Centennial trail. Either path will lead you to breath-taking, panoramic views well worth the journey to the top.

If you prefer to take the intensity up a notch, we’ve got you covered. Not for the faint of heart, Giant’s Head Grind in May invites participants to ascend 500 metres over a five kilometre route, starting at the beach at Peach Orchard Park and crossing the finish line at the top of the mountain. For cyclists, pit yourself against the mountain in the Test of Humanity race in September where cyclists of all abilities have a chance to race and support an amazing cause.

For both hikers and cyclists, the Trans Canada/KVR trail is simply a must. The Summerland portion of the trail covers 61 kms between Penticton and Osprey Lake and features four bridges including the KVR’s highest, the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge. Take your time to enjoy the amazing views of Trout Creek Canyon, as the water meanders toward Okanagan Lake 70 metres below your feet.

Whether you’re looking for marked trails or peaceful, meandering roads with stunning views of orchards and lakes, hikers and bikers alike will be delighted by the many options. For complete trail information, drop by the Visitor Centre or check out www.tourismsummerland. com.

Explore Lower Town on the popular Centennial Trail with a stop at the Adams Bird Sanctuary just off Peach Orchard Hill.

Camping The convenience of home meets the beauty of life in the great outdoors.

Sophia Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC Jackson/TOTA/SCC

This is the Life With the crackling of the campfire and the smell of roasting marshmallows in the air, nothing says summer in the Okanagan better than camping. Whether you stay in parks and campgrounds next to the shimmering lake, in a lovely wooded forest or right in the middle of a cherry orchard, there’s a spot for everyone to begin their Summerland adventure.

Beaches Having to choose between multiple beaches to find the perfect sunbathing spot is a terrible burden. We’re sorry. #Okanagantough

Darren Robinson/TOTA/SCC

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Life’s a Beach When you stay in Summerland, you’ll have to grapple with some difficult questions: Are fresh cherries more delicious chilled or at room temperature? Should the winery tour come before or after the extensive café lounging? Which beach do we feel like visiting today? With one of the most beautiful lakes in the world right outside our door, of course our beach life is going to be fantastic. The Okanagan sun implores you to make a day of it and explore all of our beaches with a delicious picnic basket. The only question is where to start. Do you want a long walk in the sand, water sport rentals, great concession food and extensive picnic and BBQ space? Choose Sun-Oka Provincial Park at the southernmost edge of town. Does a quieter option that includes a stroll by a pretty lighthouse and a fabulous view of the clay cliffs across the lake appeal to you? Then head to the local favourite – Powell Beach in the Trout Creek neighbourhood. Remember your tennis racquet; there is a lovely shaded park to play in!

Kids and teens find their fun in the beaches of the Lower Town area of Summerland. Long docks make for lots of jumping and splashing. Ample sand castle material, change room facilities and an outdoor shower can all be found at Gordon Beggs Rotary Beach. Take a walk or cast a fishing line from the historic Kiwanis Walking Pier, also the perfect place to sit and watch the moon rise after dark. Follow the walking path a little further to the spacious Peach Orchard Beach and Park where you’ll find an extensive playground and spray park. Much of Lower Town is connected via the walking path from the boat launch at Peach Orchard Park south to the Summerland Waterfront Resort. We haven’t forgotten the four-legged members of your family! Head to the dog beaches at Sun-Oka or Peach Orchard parks, where Rover can play and make new doggy friends while you relax between games of fetch. Still can’t decide? Drop by the visitor centre for the local scoop on the best beach to fit your mood.

The Summerland Lifestyle Described in the early 1900’s as a “heaven on earth with summer weather forever,” Summerland’s climate and picturesque surroundings continue to entice people to move here. Over the years many other factors have made Summerland truly a place to settle in forever. Those interested in business come here for our entrepreneurial spirit, sense of innovation, committed local government, talented employee pool, and proximity to larger centres, airports and universities. Families come for our excellent schools, friendly neighbours, every type of sports and recreation program and amazing community events all year long. Retirees enjoy our dedicated service clubs, strong volunteer ethic, variety of cultural and recreational options and welcoming churches.

Every Summerland resident is fortunate enough to enjoy numerous amenities here, such as stunning beaches, well-maintained hiking and biking trails and access to the very best produce grown fresh just minutes away. Why do we live here? We are here for the reasons you can’t explain: The way the lake seems to change its shimmering colour every day, the beauty of Main Street observed from a comfy café chair where the baristas know your name and how you like your coffee, the crowds and excitement of Light-Up night, and the taste of juicy fresh fruit that says summer, and Summerland all year round. Come see for yourself. Be careful though; after just a few days here you’ll most likely decide you want to live here too. Festivals & Events Name a season and we’ve got an event to match. In Summerland it’s easy to find a reason to celebrate.

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Eric Simard/TOTA/SCC

Celebrate with Us

Summerland’s Calendar is filled with great events for every interest, whether you are looking for a memorable day with your family, an unforgettable experience or just something new and exciting, we have it all here.

Festival of Lights

On the last Friday in November, downtown Summerland is transformed into a winter wonderland to host the Okanagan’s oldest and most extravagant welcome to the Christmas season. Leave behind your holiday worries as you enjoy ice carvers, fireworks and every type of food imaginable before finishing with a visit from Santa Claus himself.

Adrenaline Junkies: the Test of Humanity

Are you up for a challenge? Test your cycling endurance with events like Granfondo and Test of Humanity mountain bike race. Can’t get enough competition? Register for the Giant’s Head Run, the UltraMan Canada competition, the Summerland ORCA Sprint & Kids of Steel Triathlon or the Giant’s Head Grind. For the exceptionally brave, Summerland is also home to North America’s oldest freeride longboard competition, Giant’s Head Freeride.

Outdoor Adventure

Love nature but not the fast pace? Check out Earth Week in April, the Meadow Lark Festival in May and the Kids’ Fishing Derby in June to take in all of the natural beauty that surrounds Summerland.

Family Fun

Action Fest weekend in June has something for the whole family, including a parade, a slo-pitch

Chris Cornett

tournament, live music and exciting games and activities galore in the park.

Arts and Culture

Tour our galleries and studios and take part in cultural events going on all year. Leave your creative mark by painting a banner that will adorn Summerland’s downtown. Take an art class, or catch a performance by the Summerland Singers and Players, who have been producing entertaining community theatre for more than 100 years. For music lovers, head to the Rodeo Grounds for the annual Bluegrass Festival, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015.

Food and Wine

Summerland is a true wine destination, offering fabulous festivals and events all year long for true connoisseurs and wine lovers alike. Experience our region through the Spring and Fall Wine Festivals, Heard It Through the Grapevine in June and Light Up the Vines in November. September brings Summerland’s annual Fall Fair. For more than 100 years locals have gathered to compete in baking, preserving and growing. Bring the kids to take part in the hands-on heritage displays and see the unique history of our town.

Train Spotters

Our famous train, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, runs from mid-May with their regular schedule and offers specialty rides for Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Day, and Christmas. Don’t miss the chance to book a ticket for one of the Great Train Robbery & BBQ events. Check in at www.tourismsummerland.com for a full list of events.
