LACEY TOWNSHIP – Authorities are investigating a robbery Sunday night at Mrs. Walkers Ice Cream in Forked River where employees say they were robbed at gunpoint.

Two employees say they were preparing to close the store around 10 p.m. Sunday when a man entered and demanded cash, according to a statement from the Lacey Township Police Department. The man claimed he had a handgun in his back pocket, though no gun was produced during the incident.

The man had the employees place the cash in a pillow case and told them he would kill them if they called police, according to the statement. He fled on foot, heading toward Route 9.

The employees called the business owner, who called police. They didn’t locate the suspect in the area.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are looking for the suspect. Investigators are retrieving video footage of the area.

Police describe the suspect as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s, approximately 6-foot-1 with a medium build. He was seen wearing a white mask, a hooded multi-colored sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white gloves during the robbery.

Store manager Matthew Madeo said that this is the first robbery the Lacey location has had in the seven years he has worked as manager. He said he plans to keep employees company as they close every night for the time being.

“I just don’t feel safe right now,” he said. “That’s why I’m going to be there every night.”
