Field Notes from Gabon's Great River
In the fall of 2014, The Nature Conservancy and CENAREST (the Gabonese Scientific Research Center) led a scientific expedition to the Ogooué River. The international team of scientists set forth with the goal of documenting the river's biodiversity at key locations around Lastourville, in the Ogooué-Lolo province of southeastern Gabon.

Water infrastructure across the United States is aging. The average Army Corps dam is more than 60 years old, and few water-control plans guiding the operation of large, federal dams have been revised since their development decades ago. That means there's a real opportunity to influence the way these structures are operated to account for and benefit from the role nature can play in large river systems.

New Research Makes Strong Case for Fish Passage
A new technique is helping scientists protect the Alabama shad, which once swarmed Gulf-coast rivers as far north as Iowa by the millions to spawn. But shad populations plummeted in the last century, as dams blocked their path upriver.
