11 Design Objects to Spot in “Fifty Shades of Grey”

Seldom do the worlds of blockbuster entertainment and the schooled A&D eye of Interior Design magazine intersect. But it just so happens that the “possessive, jealous, control freak” at the center of Fifty Shades of Grey lives in a contemporary bachelor pad, rich with metallic accents and unexpected geometry curated by set designers at Covet Lounge. Find an exclusive look at 11 furnishings found in Christian Grey’s luxurious apartment here.

Based on the fetishized romance novels by E.L. James (in case you haven’t heard, the series sold more than 100 million copies worldwide), the apartment’s sets stick to a mostly neutral color palette and limited-edition furnishings sourced from partner brands Boca Do LoboDelightfullBrabbu and Koket.

Lighting with bold, signature shapes is the first to set the mood. Delightfull’s Turner table lamp has copper-finished brass arcs topped with a lacquered aluminum shade, while its Coltrane table lamp has brass and steel tubes, appropriately locked in a tight embrace. The hammered-brass Vellum wall lamp from Brabbu is inspired by the paper-like material used for ancient manuscripts and the gilded bronze Chloe sconce from Koket resembles a haphazardly coiled gold ribbon.

Storage, just as glamorous, includes the Tortugu brass trunk from Boca Do Lobo; the Mademoiselle armoire from Koket, finished with a hand-carved polished brass butterfly and gold leaf detailing; and the hand-carved and hand-finished Diamond faceted sideboard from Boca Do Lobo, varnished in a high-gloss translucent amethyst.

The Burlesque console from Koket unexpectedly perches on polished brass rings. A tribute to French cabaret, it’s topped in black embossed cobra skin.

Before heading into Grey’s secret pleasure room, the couple can sip cocktails from the Sequoia Center occasional table from Brabbu, which adds a warm, organic touch with its walnut root veneer top.

Seating for Christian and Ana is unexpectedly straight-laced, with pieces including the Desire upholstered sofa and chair from Koket. However, it’s all in the details. According to the press release, Desire’s matt-gold hammered band trims its form just “the way the mind outlines the female desire.”
