A master of metamorphosis, who morphed from Serbian nationalist into NATO advocate, Montenegro’s veteran leader faces a tough challenge in the coming election to win a seventh term.

The longest-ruling prime minister in Europe, Milo Djukanovic shows no signs of fatigue. With the same passion he attacks his opponents and promises a better future in the campaign for the October elections, just like he did the first time he ran for office in 1991.
But things could become tough for Djukanovic this time. Most polls show support slipping for his party, Democratic Party of Socialist, DPS.
They suggest that his party may remain the largest in parliament after the elections on October 16, but, in a neck-and-neck campaign with the opposition, the DPS stands at a historic low on about 38-per-cent support.
That is far from a comfortable majority for Djukanovic, even with the support of minority ethnic parties.
