'12 Years a Slave,' 'Elephant Man' costume designer Patricia Norris dies at 83

Patricia Norris, the costume designer behind 12 Years a Slave, Scarface, and many projects in collaboration with David Lynch, has died at the age of 83, EW has confirmed.

Norris died on Feb. 20 of natural causes, according to her publicist.

Over the course of her career, she was nominated for six costume design Oscars for her work on Days of Heaven, The Elephant Man, Victor Victoria, 2010, Sunset and 12 Years a Slave. She also won an Emmy for her costume designs for the pilot of Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Her work with Lynch also included her first production designer credit for Blue Velvet, for which she took on responsibility of the set decorations as well.

Norris designed costumes for a number of other productions throughout her career, including The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly, and several Mel Brooks films like History of the World: Part I and High Anxiety.

Norris also won lifetime achievement awards from both the Art Directors Guild in 2011 and the Costume Designers Guild in 2007, making her the only person to receive both awards.
