Make48 Contest Set for April 18-19 in Kansas City

The Inventors Center of Kansas City is planning a major new contest that will bring inventors from across the country to town in April.

Make48, scheduled for April 18-19, is a 48-hour competition where teams will conceive, build and pitch a new commercial product. Teams will have access to fabrication labs during the competition. They’ll also be required to shoot a demo video of their new invention.

As an added challenge, Make48 participants will have to create a specific kind of invention, but they won’t be given any advance warning until the contest starts.

Organizers are taking Make48 applications now at this website. There’s no charge to apply, but the teams that are selected to compete will be asked to pay $100. Teams will be limited to no more than four people, and the team captain must be at least 18 years old.

And if you’re not chosen to compete—or you just want to learn more about the inventors’ lifestyle—Make48 will host a daylong slate of speakers starting at 9 a.m. on April 17 at Union Station.

Presenters at the April 17 “Creators Kickoff” will include Stephen Key, founder of InventRight and author of “One Simple Idea”; Scott Browning, prototype studio manager and design engineer at Hallmark Cards; Tricia Edwards, head of education for the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for Invention and Innovation; and many more.

Admission will cost about $90. You can register at this website.
