ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Two days after a teachers union-led protest of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s education proposals, charter school advocates are gearing up to make their views heard.

The group Families for Excellent Schools says more than 9,000 people will rally at the state Capitol Wednesday for an end to what they say is the state’s failing schools crisis.

Cuomo has proposed spending $1.1 billion more on schools next year if lawmakers pass his reforms. Among them is one to allow for more charter schools, which are publicly funded but privately run.

That idea is opposed by the New York State United Teachers union, which staged a boisterous 1,000-person rally in Albany on Monday.

Organizers say Wednesday’s event will feature former WNBA player Lisa Leslie and singer Janelle Monae.

It starts at 11:15 a.m.
