Blind Vernon woman fundraising for dying service dog

VERNON – A blind Vernon woman is turning to the public for financial help after the service dog who guides her through life fell ill with cancer.

Gail Pifer is completely blind. Her service dog, Tyrell, helps her navigate stairs and everyday obstacles like poles and parking meters. He’s been her constant companion for seven years. Pifer says Tyrell was diagnosed with terminal cancer in February.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

His illness meant pricey vet bills totaling more than $1,800. Pifer says she can’t afford to pay the veterinary bills on her own.

Pifer hopes crowd funding can help her raise $3,000 to cover Tyrell’s existing medical bills and any further care.

“The further costs will be if and when the time comes to have him put to sleep. I don’t want him to suffer so I want to be able to take him to the vet when he lets me know that he is done,” says Pifer.
