Here’s why Divi and other Page builders won’t go away

Themes & Plugins

Everyone has an opinion

If you step up to a group of WordPress developers at a WordCamp, and bring up the topic of Divi or Page Builders, the conversation can go one way or another.

If they're end users, they may tell you how much they like it.

If they're developers, they may tell you how much they don't like it.

What I'm sure about is this – no one will have a neutral opinion. And if you're a product person like me, you know that's exactly the space you want to step into. A spot where people either love or hate you, but can't ignore you.

Don't confuse the vehicle with the destination

The other day I highlighted that it's really easy to get confused and start focusing on the mechanism, the distribution engine (if you will), that a company uses to get their message out. That message – when it connects with an audience – is it's goal. That's its destination.

The web, and a company's website, is a vehicle for communicating its message. It used to be a yellow pages ad. It might one day be a mobile app. I don't know.

What I know is that the destination won't change.

  • Companies still want their message out there.
  • And they want to stand apart from others.
  • And they want to look good.

Wix, Weebly, Squarespace & Website Builder

Take a look at the offers that some other, non-WordPress, folks offer.

Here's Wix. With clean and good looking templates.

Here's Weebly. With templates and tons of drag and drop features.

squarespaceAnd here's GoDaddy's Website Builder. More good looking themes.

  • Style
  • Elegance
  • Clean Designs
  • Variety

And in many cases, the cost (with hosting included) is free or minimal.

When you're a business, not a designer, and you can pick a pre-made theme that looks sharp (trendy, even!), why wouldn't you do it?

And if you're on WordPress already, what's your best bet going to be?

Likely more of the same. A drag and drop set of features along with tons of great looking options.

In other words Divi and other page builders.

This is why Divi & Page Builders won't disappear

The reality is that small businesses are filled with people. Not robots. They are motivated by the very same things that you and I are.

Remember when  you showed up to elementary school wearing an outfit that your mom convinced you was great. Then, when you arrived, you knew, in seconds that your hunch had been right.

You were mocked all day long. And you hated it.

What did you do that Christmas? You asked for the cool clothes, right?

Maybe it was special jeans. Maybe it was a Members Only jacket. But whatever it was, it was an attempt to be like everyone else.

We all like being in the “in” crowd.

But at the same time, maybe you asked for something special at Christmas. Something no one else would have. So that when you went back to school, and it was show and tell time (or lunch break), you could show it off.

We all like standing out from the crowd.

When business owners need a website, guess what? They're just like you and me.

They want to have a cool design. Something that helps them belong.

They also want something different from everyone else. Something that helps them stand out.

And that's what these solutions give them.

  • A chance to start with a great look.
  • A chance to change it to make it their own.
  • A chance to boast about their site.
  • A chance to stand out from the crowd.

All without writing code.

Trust me, this will become more normal, not less.

Page Builder Solutions

If you're looking for page builders that aren't Divi, here are a few other options (in alpha order):

Whatever you choose, know that tons of others will choose with you.

Because everyone wants a great looking site, without coding, and that promise is what folks are buying.

Even Vince Vaughn agrees.
