Burnaby SkyTrain station stabbing victim died trying to help someone: IHIT

WATCH: Homicide investigators are looking into a deadly stabbing. It happened at a Burnaby SkyTrain station. As John Hua reports, police are searching for more than one suspect.

March 3: The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has arrested two men in connection with the death of James Enright at the Edmonds Sky train Station on Feb. 15.

A 22-year-old man faces a charge of second degree murder and an 18-year-old man faces charges of manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm in connection with the death.

A publication ban is in place preventing the release of further details of the two alleged suspects, but both remain in custody pending their next court appearances.

Enright, 27, died of his injuries after being stabbed just before 1 a.m. on Feb. 15. According to RCMP, Enright was “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and added that he died “because he tried to help someone.”

Previous story: The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is in Burnaby after an early morning death next to a SkyTrain station.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of IHIT says a man was fatally stabbed at Edmonds Station just before 1 a.m. The exact location isn’t known, but Ashton says all indications are it happened closer to the bus loop than the SkyTrain station itself.

“Obviously we have to wait for the coroner to get back to us with the final report on final cause of death, but we do know there was a knife involved,” she said.

“At this point we’re calling it an altercation…until we’ve had a chance to talk to everyone who was there, it’s really hard to identify what it was.”

Ashton says some witnesses have come forward and are being interviewed. She’s hoping more people come forward with information, given the time and location of the incident.

“It’s quarter to 1 in the morning, the SkyTrain is still running, there’s a reasonable belief that a lot of people would have seen something,” she said.

TransLink says the bus loop at Edmonds Station is closed to traffic and pedestrians Sunday morning. All buses are detouring to allow passengers to access the station from the south side.

SkyTrain service is running as normal.

IHIT is asking anyone with information about the incident to call 1-877-551-4448 or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
