BIG CHANGES COMING TO CALIFORNIA TITLE 24 RESIDENTIAL LIGHTING

The California Energy Commission held a public hearing yesterday, March 2nd, on the 45-day residential language, for the 2016 Title 24 revisions. Expect big changes for residential lighting! The following changes to residential lighting are likely:

  • All lighting requirements will be mandatory, not menu options.
  • All residential luminaires will be high efficacy.
  • Allows screw-based LED luminaires if the lamps meet Appendix JA8 requirements.
  • Downlights need dedicated sources.
  • CFL, HID, and induction don't have to meet JA8 requirements.
  • LED GU24 will NOT have to meet JA8 requirements.
  • Downlight sources must meet JA8 requirements.
  • JA8 requirements include: 45 lpw, PF of 0.9+, 3000K CCT or lower for indoor, 90+ CRI, R9 of 50+, dimming down to 3%, phase cut dimmers meet NEMA SSL 7A, and lumen maintenance of 86.7% at 6,000 hours.

Keep in mind that the revisions are NOT final, and they likely won't become effective until 2017, but that's not too far off, either. More details when the Title 24 - 2016 is finalized! If you would like to discuss what this means for your business, please email me at david@lightingsold.com .
