Del Potro eyes Miami Open for injury comeback

Juan Martin del Potro - Cropped

Juan Martin del Potro is setting himself the goal of returning to the ATP World Tour by the end of March, after another injury lay-off.

The Argentine, and former world number four, was out of competitive action for 10 months after a recurrence of his left wrist problem, which saw him undergo surgery.

Del Potro's inactivity has left him ranked number 614 in the world, despite a quarter-final appearance on return from injury at the Sydney International in January.

That tournament proved to be his only of the Australian swing, as he suffered another setback and required another operation, but Del Potro is keen to get into the field for the Miami Open, a Masters-level event, starting March 25.

"I'm not going drop my arms or surrender because of an injury. If my hand responds well, I'll come back as soon as possible but that depends exclusively on my hand, it will decide my return," Del Potro told a news conference in Buenos Aires.

"I'm in full recovery, I'm going faster than the timeframe the doctor set for me as a goal and that has me enthused and that's why I believe my return will be very soon."

Del Potro said his three matches in Sydney gave him a boost, after missing the most of the 2014 season.

"The reception I got in Sydney made me feel fans had not forgotten me," he added.

"It charged me with the energy to take the decision to go and see the doctor again losing no more time because I felt that if I recovered my physical condition I would rediscover my game and I don't care how long it takes."

Del Potro has been practising with his country's Davis Cup team, ahead of the South Americans' World Group tie against Brazil in the Argentinean capital.
