OTTAWA, Kan. — A driver arrested for DUI Monday night following a single-vehicle crash has been identified as a two-year veteran of the Ottawa Police Department.

Twenty-three-year-old Officer Derek Butters is now temporarily off the streets and under investigation. Investigators say Butters traveled west on East 15th when he slammed his Dodge Ram pickup into a utility pole.

Jennifer Blanton and her husband say around 10:30 on Monday night after hearing the roaring noise, they raced outside their home and saw the aftermath of a terrible, single car crash.

“I was in bed watching TV when my husband and I heard a loud boom that almost sounded like an explosion, ” said a stunned Jennifer Blanton.

It happened behind the couple’s home near East 15th Street and South Hickory.

“My wife told me a cop did it and I was like what?! No way,” said Tim Blanton.

The Blantons say the truck’s front right tire ripped off after the crash and damaged their backyard fence.

“We thought he hit our vehicle that was parked in front of our house because there was a bumper laying behind our vehicle,” said Jennifer Blanton.

Paramedics treated Butters at the scene for minor injuries.

The officer has been with the Ottawa Police Department for two years. He now faces several charges including: DUI, texting while driving, failing to report an accident and no proof of insurance. Butters paid a $2,900 bond and got out of jail.

He apparently wasn’t at his home in nearby Wellsville when FOX 4’s Robert Townsend and photographer Pat Holloway stopped by his house on Tuesday afternoon.

As of Tuesday night, the officer remains on paid, routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the police department’s internal investigation.

“I just think it’s sad. They’re supposed to be role models in the community. I think he sure is lucky that he survived, ” said Jennifer Blanton.
