BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Canisius High School is looking at replacing much of the Jesuit school’s leadership. Monday another leader announced he would be leaving.

High School Principal Timothy Fitzgerald said Monday he would retire effective immediately. Fitzgerald stepped in as principal in 2010 after being elevated from his teacher position.

Canisius officials say Fitzgerald fell ill in 2014, and started a medical leave in October to get surgery. They say his health issues are the sole factor behind the retirement.

The school will be searching for a group of new leaders. After his recent resignation, Canisius President Rev. Joseph Costantino, S.J. called this a time for new leadership at the school.

Costantino resigned after a lengthy athletic scandal which led to the firing of former Canisius High School Dean Beck O’Connor. The firing is largely linked back to the discipline of a student athlete in March of 2014.
