Description

The next Practitioner Seminar for Adam Smith Business School students takes place on 13th March 2015 with Gary Gillespie, Scottish Government Director and Chief Economist.

Gary was appointed Scottish Government Director and Chief Economist in September 2011. He joined the Scottish Government in 2000 from the University of Strathclyde where he worked as a research fellow in the Fraser of Allander institute.

His current role is one of the most visible roles within the public sector in Scotland and is focussed on improving the outcomes relating to the delivery of economic and public policy in Scotland. His assessment of the state of the economy and the economic challenges facing Scotland are published regularly.

He also provides strategic economic advice to Scottish Ministers covering a range of areas including the macro economy, constitution, fiscal analysis, labour market and enterprise policy. Over the last two years Gary has led an intense programme of work relating to the economy and constitutional change in Scotland.

Gary was appointed to the senior civil service in 2006 and his previous roles include providing advice relating to health, local government and finance. He was appointed an Honorary Professor atGlasgowCaledonianUniversityin January 2011 and was appointed the role of Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde in 2015. Gary lives in Glasgow and has two children.
