Putting the Standards into Practice

Standards Pilot Sites

Test bed Projects

In 2018/19, we worked with 10 test bed projects spanning different organisations, regions and research settings to put the standards into practice. Take a look at further information on the test beds here.

Freestyle Projects

In addition to the 10 test beds, we invited individuals, groups and organisations already utilising the standards or interested in putting the standards to practical use in their work environment to get involved in a more informal way. We called these 'freestyle' projects.

Sharing the experience and insights of the pilots

The experience and feedback of all 40+ pilots have been used to improve the standards.

Pilot organisations approached using the standards in different ways. Some tackled them one or two at a time, while organisations that were newer to public involvement in research focused on one standard only. Others started with a mapping exercise or audit, prioritising work on the standards with the greatest need for improvement.

Pilot organisations described how using the standards encouraged them to reflect on their current public involvement in research plans and activity, by providing a framework and guide for conversations. Many set themselves targets to meet the standards and agreed systems for monitoring progress.

For more information on this pilot phase and how it was used to 'fine-tune' the final version of the Standards, please take a look at this document.

How people use the standards will be influenced by many issues, such as the purpose of public involvement in research, and the amount of resources (money, people, skills) available. These resources, and continuity of support for public involvement are important factors in creating a research culture that welcomes the public into research, and helps researchers and organisations work with the public.

Next steps

We are also drawing together real life examples of how the standards have been implemented in both small and large ways to support the research and public involvement communities is using the standards to improve practice. Find out more about how the standards were implemented in this test bed stories document.
