Track & Field Third After Day 1 Of NSIC Indoor Championships

MANKATO, Minn. – Freshman weight thrower Kaitlyn Long broke the NSIC Indoor Championship record and senior Jordan Skelly broke the school record in the 3000-meter run to wrap up a solid first day for the Warriors in the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Mankato.

After the first day of events at the meet, the Warriors currently sit in third place with 34 points in seven scored events. They are three points behind the University of Mary and 13 points behind meet leader Augustana.

Long won the women's weight throw event with a 65' 2" (19.86-meters) throw, breaking the previous NSIC Indoor Championship record of 63' 6" (19.36-meters) previously set in 2013 by Wayne State's Carly Fehringer.

It was long's second-best personal throw of a season, coming off a successful Red & White Open event where she set the sixth best throw in NCAA Division II history in the weight throw. It was the third automatic qualifying mark that Long had recorded this this season.

Alyssa Rausch took third place in the weight throw with a toss of 59' 2 ¼" (18.04-meters).

Skelly continued to break her own personal and school records in the 3000-meter run as she crossed the finish line in 10:10.75. Her time broke her own previous school record of 10:11.64.

The Warriors distance medley team also put together a strong finish. The relay team of Leah Karsten, Taylor Vogel, Madison Schroeder, and Chelsea Schrubbe completed their race in 12:20.02, setting the third-best mark in WSU school history and took fourth overall in the event.

Winona State will try to continue to climb up the ranks, as they will compete in multiple events in the second day of the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
