What made you decide to start your own business? I wanted to practice holistically outside of the pharmaceutical insurance based model.

What made you decide to start your own business? To help other nurses looking for alternative roles away from the bedside. To inspire and help nurses. Also aligning with affiliates that align with my values, help others with their health and wellness, and help build an additional stream of income which is more important than ever. Next is to focus on helping patients who are seeking alternatives for help outside of traditional care as a functional medicine nurse and with Remnant Nursing.

Heather Willems, RN, BSN, The Work At Home Nurse:"After starting a family of my own, I began my search for other options away from the bedside and started my work at home nurse role over nine years ago.
After answering the same questions, I started the Work at Home Nurse to help more nurse moms who are looking for the same flexibility and more time with their family by working from home and created a mini course to help address and answer these common questions.
I also know many nurses are looking for extra money, and I share affiliates that I love, that help others, and help create an additional income stream which is needed now more than ever. Over these past several years, most extra time has been spent getting involved to create change and turn the tide to fight for medical freedom, informed consent, and patient advocacy. I also joined the FLCCC Alliance as a nurse in 2021 to help patients seeking resources and information in fighting Covid, as well as the Nurse Freedom Network to to advocate for medical freedom and informed consent for all.
I've recently completed the Functional Medicine for Nurses course offered by Melissa Screibfeder and look forward to helping others as a functional medicine nurse as well as through Remnant Nursing!"

What made you decide to start your own business? I have always had business ideas and wanted to do things differently and run things the way I wanted to. I decided to start my own business after I was fired and realized I didn’t have interest or passion in doing any of the jobs I looked at.

Nena Hart MSN, RN, Hart Healthcare Solutions:"I started as a nurse's aide at 18 and worked my way up to a director of nursing to improve the quality of care for patients and working conditions for staff. I transitioned to hospice as on-call then case manager and worked my way up to director, area director and administrator, vice president and then national utilization manager of DME. I've been married for 18 years have 4 children and I live in Hawaii. I was so committed to high performance in my corporate role that I really strained and devalued my marriage. I had to really evaluate my priorities and my pride and change my attitude. My husband is my biggest supporter, and I am fortunate he is so forgiving. Today we are doing great and my marriage takes priority over everything else. Two years ago, I was recruited to a CEO position in Hawaii and was fired 5 weeks later with no reason. That is how I was finally able to start my consulting business."

What made you decide to start your own business? The more I work with patients and families, the more value I see in my knowledge as a nurse. Health impacts all aspects on an individual's life, as well as those around them. Starting Healthy Now and Later is a way for me to reach beyond the bedside and share this knowledge to improve the health, wellbeing, and life of another.

Leah Korkis, BSN, RN, Healthy Now and Later:"Healthy Now and Later is a free resource for caregivers and those 55+. There they will find information on common health topics, health promotion recipes for special diets, and a nation-wide database of local services and financial aid. For further information or clarification, visitors may also "Ask A Nurse"."

What made you decide to start your own business? Autonomy to help others in a non clinical setting in an effort to hopefully empower them in such a way that they might be able to avoid hospitalization or chronic health Issues. I have been an entreprenuer all of my life and my nursing degree and license allow me to practice in the capacity I have always wanted to: to help others holistically to reach their lifestyle and wellness goals. In addition, I am a relationship type of person and appreciate long term interactions/communication with clients.

Shannon Garrett, BS, RN, CHLC, Shannon Garrett Wellness, @AutoimmuneRN, Tennessee Nurse Entrepreneurs, Health Coaches:"I provide holistic health, wellness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching for women who struggle with the many complexities of living with autoimmune or other chronic health issues. I have a 12 week program I work them through to help them reach their goals and I provide a NANDA wellness care plan for them. I personally have three autoimmune issues and know what these women go through. Medication nor diet are stand-alone treatments. Lifestyle issues are an integral part of healing and I help them work through challenges."

What made you decide to start your own business? I always knew I wanted to own my own "something" I just never knew what that something was. So I went to school for my master's in business and nursing- just in case that idea came to me! When I left my inpatient role to work at a wellness center, coordinating a physician referred exercise program, I went through a health and wellness coaching program- my first one of two. When I was done the club wanted me to coach their clients there. But I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do- I wanted to coach my own clients in my own business. That "something" had turned into a reality. I am quite independent, motivated, hard-working, committed, and dedicated. I want to make a difference and have an impact on the nursing profession. I want to help our profession rise to a new level. That being said my "coaching" business has turned into so much more- I realized that nurses needed me in many different capacities. So I have turned to speaking, writing, radio show hosting, and many other modalities to be able to help nurses where they are at. I love being a business owner and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Reiki Master, Living Sublime Wellness:"Elizabeth "Nurse Coach" Scala, MSN/MBA, RN is passionate about helping healthcare professionals, nurses in particular, to embody holistic living and embrace self-care. Through her business, Living Sublime Wellness, she writes regularly on the topic of self-care, conducts a free, monthly wellness workshop, and offers both in person and online seminars for busy nurses.

Elizabeth offers group coaching programs, one-on-one coaching, and is the founder of a virtual self-care conference for nurses called the RejuveNation Collaboration. She has written two books for nurses on healthy lifestyle and hosts her own blog talk radio show, the Living Sublime Wellness Show on the Rejuvenation Station.

Being a Reiki Master and daily practitioner of self-Reiki treatment, Elizabeth is available to speak, write, and teach nurses about the balancing and healing effects of Reiki therapy.

What made you decideto start your own business?

I decided to start my own business in order to bring my many gifts and insights to nurses in search of opportunities to improve their health, improve their work-life balance, increase their personal and professional satisfaction, and live happier and more satisfying lives. I believe that nurses need to learn how to take better care of themselves so that they can provide the best care possible. My coaching practice focuses on nurses taking control of their own lives, health, and career path. The ripple effect of this type of proactive personal empowerment by nurses is enormous, since nurses touch the lives of so many individuals and communities. My own coaching business/practice seemed like the most intelligent way to accomplish these goals.

Keith Carlson, RN, BSN, Nurse Keith Coaching, New Mexico Nurse Entrepeneurs, Nurse Coaches:" Nurse Keith Coaching provides professional coaching services for nurses and nursing students. My services include health and wellness coaching, work-life balance, burnout prevention, burnout recovery, career coaching, and life coaching. The majority of my coaching sessions are conducted via telephone and Skype, although some face-to-face sessions are possible for clients living in Northern New Mexico. The development of workshops and webinars is currently in process.

During the course of 2014, I became a Board Certified Nurse Coach (NC-BC) under the auspices of the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation. My coaching services now also include "soulful social media coaching" and coaching in authentic networking skills, including the optimal way to maximize your use of Linked In.

I also offer custom Santa Fe-based coaching retreats for nurses and healthcare professionals who want to have a vacation AND do some coaching with me in my beautiful new office facing the Santa Fe Mountains."

What made you decide to start your own business?

I was teaching traditional classroom I.V. Education—and saw the many obstacles of this traditional type of education: getting the nurses to the course, expense, travel, schedule difficulties, different learning styles and paces. It occurred to me that there had to be a better way to provide these nurses the didactic portion of I.V. education in a capacity that met THEIR needs. My husband (and CTO) has over 28 years of experience in software and database architecture, and website management. So we dreamed up Pedagogy-which means "the art and science of teaching"—and we were off! It is a great misconception that all there is to I.V. education is how to insert a catheter—take one of our courses and you will soon realize—there is a lot of knowledge a nurse must have to deliver infusion therapy to their patients safely.

Capra Dalton RN, CEO, Pedagogy Incorporated, Texas Nursing Entrepreneurs, Continuing Education (CEU) Providers:"Pedagogy Incorporated is a provider of nursing continuing education. We specialize in I.V. Therapy Education and Wound Care Education. We offer accredited courses to individual nurses, Long Term Care Facilities, Home Health Agencies, and Hospitals. Pedagogy can assist facilities and agencies with determining an Infusion Education plan that suits their unique market. Competency demonstration (skills) Checklists have been developed for all I.V. and Wound related skills and are available for those that choose Pedagogy Education. We are currently adding authors and expanding our course offerings to respiratory therapy, PT/OT's R.Ph. etc."

I enjoy helping people. The longer I was in the medical field and the more consulting I did, I saw a great need in the area of financial control. Hospitals were broke, companies were broke and the devastation I saw from that led me to help individuals focus on their own financial game plan - Especially physicians and nurses - they made the most money and spent the most - A typical physician earning about 125k a year was spending 150k a year - not a good financial position - So my crusade became that of educator -Educator and coach - getting health care professionals to develop and maintain a financial life.

Brigette M. Cutchins, RN, COHN, Colorado:"If you are like many people, you are in the dark about your finances. You pay your bills each month and do your best to prepare for the future. But the truth is, there is only so much money to go around and creating a financial game plan on your own can be overwhelming. PFS can help. A complimentary Financial Needs Analysis can help bring your current financial situation to light. It can show you where your finances stand today and what you need to do to prepare for tomorrow."
