Irvine Council Member Steven Choi Embarrasses Himself and City at Truman Dinner

While the Irvine City Council is officially non-partisan, Council member Steven Choi has taken the extreme step of conservative partisanship to show up in the lobby of the Irvine Hilton wearing a banner on his back equating House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with Josef Stalin, complete with a Hammer and Sickle. Choi used his position as a city council member to gain access to the Hotel to effectively embarrass himself, the city council and those city residents attending the event.

Our summation has deal with reality, not the public images of revolutions

Since Irvine’s progressive council majority took power in December 2000, Irvine has played host to a number of Republican leaders.  The only time I can remember an elected official participating in a protest is when IUSD board memberSharon Wallin  joined parents outside an Irvine hotel when Governor Scwartzenegger came for a visit, but Wallin was like any other parent protesting cuts in education.  Progressive elected officials, if meeting a high level elected official of another party, usually leave partisanship behind and act with a certain level of dignity (does anyone remember the photo of Larry Agran shaking hands with President George W. Bush?) and demonostrate respect for the office at the very least.  Choi did none of that and equated the third most powerful member of our government with a brutal dictator.

The expression goes, “If you don’t respect the person, respect the office.” Choi demonstrate no tact, no class, and no shame in walking around a hotel event he only gained access to due to his position on the City Council.  The LiberalOC obtained the photos here which clearly show Choi wearing his city council members pin.

The Orange County Register photographer snapped a pic of Choi from behind, but failed to identify him as an Irvine City Council member.   Here’s the Register’s photo, so you can match it up with ours:

A protester wearing a satirical rendering of Nancy Pelosi as Joseph Stalin walks through the Hilton Irvine before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivers a keynote address to the Democratic Party of Orange County's 15th Annual Harry Truman Awards ceremony Friday night.

Caption from the OC Register: “A protester wearing a satirical rendering of Nancy Pelosi as Joseph Stalin walks through the Hilton Irvine before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivers a keynote address to the Democratic Party of Orange County’s 15th Annual Harry Truman Awards ceremony Friday night.”

To portray Pelosi as Stalin, a mass murderer of millions during his reign of power, is nothing short of outrageous.  Choi owes the Speaker an apology.  He owes his fellow city council members an apology.  He owes the residents of this city an apology for his embarassing antics.

Resign your position Dr. Choi; you are not fit to serve as an elected official in Irvine.  Your offensive behavior is a black eye on Irvine’s place as a city of tolerance and influence.

I’d like to place on sign on Choi’s back.  One that says “Kick me.  Again.  Harder.”

  1. Is the Register that anti-Agran that they wouldn’t identify Choi, or so clueless that they couldn’t recognize him? And what the hell was Choi thinking? Is he trying to score points with YAFers? The depiction doesn’t even rise to the level of the Obama-as-Joker idiocy…

    • One would think that coming from Korea, that Dr. Choi would be able to distinguish Communism from much needed health care reform, and that he would be familiar enough with American history to know the damage done by McCarthyism. I am surprised that voters from Irvine, given their commitment to education, would elect him to represent them on the City Council, not to mention the state legislature.

      • Go Choi! We need more politicians like this willing to point out Pelosi’s and her syncophants’ socialist tendacies! Most tax paying Americans don’t want it, we can’t afford it, and it’s unconstitutional!

      • “One would think that coming from Korea, that Dr. Choi would be able to distinguish Communism…”. Maybe that is exactly what he did, and thus wore the photo?

      • Dr. Choi couldn’t represent me any finer.

BTW, for those that think Dr. Choi’s experience in Korea should make him better able to recognize Communism, here’s a hint: it does!

      • “McCarthyism”? ARE YOU FOR REAL? Not only was McCarthy correct — he was not active enough in removing your Commie grandparents from American soil, let alone the executive branch.

In case you forgot, the Soviets were our extremely ill-advised allies during the genocidal Second World War. There were literally thousands of Bolsheviks running wild in the FDR war machine.

AND THEY NEVER LEFT. In fact, their war propaganda became American propaganda especially with respect to their bizarre pseudo-science Lysenkoism which was the basis of “internationalism” and modern, so-called “antiracism”.

You are living proof that, at least at the level of Dawkins’ meme, it works. On some of us.

Take your Left-wing Soviet Bolshevism and put it where the sun does not shine. Your kind’s time is short. Much shorter than you can possibly imagine. The consciousness of authentic, native-born Americans has finally been roused and you — descendant of those useless “huddled masses” and “wretched refuse” of the Great Migration — are in for one devil of a disillusionment.

  2. The Register doesn’t have a single progressive columnist in their editorial pages. Adam Probolsky is the Irvine World News columnist. The best Progressives can hope for in this Freedom newspaper is the “reader rebuttal.” You already know the answer to your question. Let’s see how their news pages treat this story

    • The Register doesn’t have a single progressive Communist columnist in their editorial pages. Adam Probolsky is the Irvine World News columnist. The best Progressives Communists can hope for in this Freedom newspaper is the “reader rebuttal.” You already know the answer to your question. Let’s see how their news pages treat this story

There, fixed that for you. Why can’t you leftist extremists come out and say what you REALLY stand for? You’re ALWAYS inventing new names for the same, worn out, proven-to-be-wrong philosophy of command economies and hatred towards the common man. You Progressives Communist morons fool nobody.

  3. Hi Gustavo –

We had one of our best photographers shooting that event, but I find it understandable that he doesn’t follow Irvine city politics and didn’t recognize Choi. (Indeed, I’m clueless enough myself that there are probably more O.C. councilmembers that I DON’T recognize than those I do.) He showed me the photo but obviously I couldn’t recognize Choi in it since it was a shot directly of his back, no face showing.

    Martin

  4. The news pages are certain differen than the editorial pages Marty, but during the whole China sister city incident, Steven Greenhut was all over Beth Krom calling her “ChiCom Krom”; not a peep from the boys at Orange Punch over this…..

  5. I have to side with Wisckol on this one. I think Kevin Sullivan (Register Photographer) was just snapping pictures and had no idea it was Choi. Their coverage once we identified the person as Choi has been rapid and spot on.

  6. Martin,

It’s called reporting. Hounding, digging in or Journalism.

Unfortunately, the state of the business being what it is, neither the photog or the OCR political columnist could recognize Choi, despite his wearing a badge with his NAME on it.

Why should the tax paying public expect you to uncover fraud at the fair, a philandering Shreiff or a pedophile priest, hwn this one sails by.

  7. I love it … Someone who doesn’t care what you think but calls it like he sees it.
    Choi is a great Councilman

  8. Fascinating. Choi is blaming us for making this partisan when he admits being there for partisan purposes. Sean Emery did a nice job on the story; but we have crickets from the boys in Orange Punch. Imagine if Larry Agran had done something like this….

  9. Mr. Choi walked up to me, proferred his handshake, turned his back and then showed me the horrific poster on his back that replaced Stalin with Pelosi.

I almost puked that I had shaken his hand before I registered who he was.

  10. Hi there Dan, I decided to finally drop by to see what the blog was all about.
I guess it goes to show what class elected Republican officials have. Seeing as how Truman the Democrat sent troops to defend South Korea from the Communists, Choi should show some respect for the Democrats.
I hope you send this photo to the Irvine World News and the TV news since Choi finds this appropriate actions for an elected Irvine Republican. I’m sure the OC Weekly would like it.

      • I half to agree with GL lee on this one, The majority of Democrats are now considered progressives. Thats not a good thing either, look at the progressive’s history. They were behind the idea of Hitlers concentration camps. They also were very racist, in fact they came up with the idea of building abortion clinics so that stupid people wouldn’t have children and they then could eliminate in superior nationalities. The most common one they wanted to eliminate was the blacks. They thought they were just plain dumb. Are founding fathers warned of the progressive movement yet the Demi’s think its an awesome idea. People always insult Conservatives but they are probably have no clue what it means. Go look up the definition and compare it to Liberalism, and the Progressives

        • Take an Intro to Logic class and realize how riddled with errors and generalities your argument is to everyone else (liberals, conservatives, neanderthals alike). If you’re still in middle school, my apologies. Otherwise, God help America…crazies to the left of me, idiots to my right.

    • PS: that is other than the Dems who vilified McCarthy for trying to rid our federal gov’t of commies (which is something that is desperately needed again now).

JOE!!! Where are you when we REALLY need you!?!?!?

        • Sorry Dan, you’re woefully misinformed or just ignorant. There’s an unfortunate set of documents (for you) called the “Venona Papers” that detailed the extent that McCarthy was RIGHT. Venona is a declassified explanation of the Soviets penetration of our State Department and government at large. You are WRONG!

  11. Dr. Choi may be getting a visit from the FBI or Secret Service. I read on Raw Story’s web site that they investigate all incidents of this type. I had previously thought they just looked into the most serious cases, but they investigate each one.
This hasn’t been the only instance recently where dis-respect has been shown to U.S. officials. When President Obama went to Elmendorf AFB in Alaska last month, Governor Parnell did not show up. He was less than 3 miles away “attending” another not-as-important-event. Progressives in AK took it as a definite snub of the POTUS, but, as usual, the president went on about his business. I’ve seen presidents in office since JFK, and I have never seen the level of dis-respect for a POTUS as I have since Obama took office. I’m praying that the “we say no to everything” crowd will settle down and work across the aisle to solve the serious issues we face as a nation.

    • Since when is “disrespect of public officials” a crime? Oh yes, only in totalitarian societies such as the one you Communists want to create.

I don’t recall ANY of your moron complaining about the constant disrespect of Bush from the day Al Gore invented his zany idea that Florida DEMOCRAT-run counties were shorting him votes in the 2000 election (why else would you sue for a recount ONLY in counties run by your party, but not the opposition, unless you believe that your own party is shortchanging you votes, but the opposition party is not).

Oh, that’s right. Must….not….ask….embarrassing…questions to you Marxist idiots.

    • Typical Lefty responses to this hardly newsworthy story. Had this been a “Progressive” modeling a political statement, it would have never been brought up.

Gotta love the comment about wanting investigations by the FBI and Secret Service…. Tell me, what exactly would they be investigating here? Are they going to see if Choi has a license for his copy of Photoshop, perhaps? Dream on, Progs, the FBI and Secret Service have much more pressing matters to be investigating.

So Obama got “dissed” on a recent visit to Alaska, huh? Boo hoo. Not just this Country but the entire World is waking to the fact that Obama is clueless and way, way out of his depth as President. Not to mention all the “dissing” Obama has done to others (Gordon Brown, Her Majesty the Queen, the King of Norway, etc), maybe Obamas chickens are finally coming home… to ROOST.

      • The Alaskan missed an real opportunity. Obama probably would have bowed to him too. When Obama said he had been to 57 states…which states did he double count?

    • Don’t forget 8 years of “Bush lied.” I’ve never seen such utter disrespect for a POTUS than during Bush II.

The man and his administration kept us all safe.

      • except for ignoring areport on 8/6/2001 that Bin Laden was going to attack America and that little thing called 9/11 where over 3,000 people died. Bush kept us safe all right. Tell it to those in New Orleans

        • Dan stop talking your looking dumber and dumber just like Everyone in the Senate and house, actually your probably on the same level of intelligence as Nanci Peolosi, or maybe Barbra Boxer. Clinton had a chance to bring Osama in to custody around the time he was getting a blow job from Monica, instead of agreeing to take him into custody He was more concerned with telling a lie under Oath. Bush was a socialist anyway but he let the FBI and the CIA do there job, instead of going after them for doing it. So stop with the liberal talking points, I bet you think the fort hood attack wasn’t a terrorist attack either.

        • The previous administration is just as much at fault. Remember Clinton self-admittedly had a number of chances to get OBL. And to go back a few more years, Carter FUNDED OBL against the Soviets.

…what was that you were saying??

    • I have not read a comment as naive and ignorant as this in a long time. In fact, it borders on stupid.

    • I actually live in Alaska, and Gov. Parnell did not snub Obama. He had a previously scheduled meeting and whether Dems (or ‘progressives’) like it or not, he can’t just drop everything and change his schedule to go shake hands. Nevermind how Obama completely snubbed the Mayor of Anchorage who was there, but he did give a big shout-out to our much despised Sen. Begich. How convenient.

    • Crooks and Liars. Sounds like the whole Democratic Party (and before you even make the accustion, no, I am not, nor ever have been registered as a Republican).

The last honest member of the Democratic Party was James Traficant, and they sent him to prison in retaliation for telling the truth about the federal tax system and the federal budget.

    • Crooks and Liars? Perhaps you should start with Larry Agran, the Mayor-for-Life of Irvine. Stephen Choi, despite how unorthodox he may be, has stood up to the complete corruption foisted on the people or Orange County by Agran and his cronies. The goings-on with the Democratic Socialist People’s Great Park is nothing less than a modern day version of the corruption depicted in the movie Chinatown. Choi has put himself on the line repeatedly to fight a good fight against the rape of the taxpayers, sweetheart no-bid contracts and rigging of elections.

That Choi is sticking his neck out demonstrating against the utter arrogance of Nancy Pelosi should be lauded, not ridiculed. You may not notice it now, but what Nancy Pelosi, in her hubris is doing, is to devalue the US Dollar to the point where we may lose our freedom as viable economy in the world, and bankrupt the US by out-of-control spending. Is it too much to ask her to adopt any form of fiscal restraint? Is it too much to ask Nancy Pelosi to have some meaningful dialogue with the other side of the aisle, rather than shunning them?

I hope that the 2010 elections will be bucket of cold water in her face. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am an American. And it’s time we put aside the rancor over Presidents past and present, stop the partisan bickering and work together. Shame on Nancy Pelosi for her arrogance. Shame on her for demanding to be flown anywhere on her own carbon-wasting private jets. You may be offended by Stephen Choi. But someone has to make the Speaker of the House understand that she is a servant to the electorate, and not a dictator.

  12. Dr. Choi it is time to step down. You represent the citizens of Irvine and are not doing a good job at that!

The city of Irvine is a place of tolerance and represnts all views and opinions, but not those of your warped mind.

    • Jill, Jill, Jill. Aren’t others allowed to express themselves? You’re not sounding very “tolerant” now are you? In fact, you’re sounding extremely INTOLERANT.

So, let me get this right, you want Dr. Choi, a hard working self made immigrant, to put an end to his public service because he expressed an opinion? You are a thought cop and a bully!

      • Larry — Choi has every right to protest and we have every right to criticize him for it. Now who’s being the thought police

  13. THANK YOU Dr. Choi
for standing up as an American and expressing your opinion against people who – in their enthusiasm to “help” us poor American individuals accept government’s handouts – would lead us into socialism.
You are an American I can trust will help our country prosper as a capitalism and democracy because you are willing to put your reputation on line to point out the dangerous precedents of our current Democratic-controlled government.

    • Bravo! How refreshing would it be if the President and both houses realized that if a Californian breaks his arm, it’s the responsibility of Californians to take care of it. Health Care is not a right enumerated under the constitution…it’s a good or a service.

  14. What a dork. He’s an attention seeking idiot who knew this would get media play (it made it up to San Francisco) He has absolutely no analysis. Stalin? Jeez. I have my issues with Mrs. Pelosi, but if anyone thinks she’s about to start murdering people en masse, they’re living on another planet.

    • Awwwwwwwwwww, what’s wrong, poor widdle Betsy. Is your favorite ox getting insulted? Boo hoo hoo.

I don’t recall you throwing a hissy fit when your fellow Marxist morons were calling Bush “Hitler”, and making movies fantasizing about assassinating him.

      You f***ing hypocritical tool.

    • You, miss willfully blind, are missing the point. First of all, Pelosi’s blood-family comes from a quaint tradition that holds life cheap. So cheap they terrorized southern Italy and urban America for generations.

Secondly, Pelosi is restrained at the moment by opposing forces that prevent her from doing what she would do absent said opposition. I do not doubt for one New York second she would kill to achieve her objectives ABSENT COUNTERFORCE POTENTIALLY DIRECTED AT HER. At the moment, this means police and law enforcement and perhaps the military.

Hilter, I remind you, took power through democratic vote using force only after he consolidated power.

The mafia used force to obtain and retain power.

Tell me how this person, ruthless and unprincipled, descended and associate of known mobsters and others with similar “lifestyles” is immune to the tradition of smashing opponents when they have the opportunity to do so without fear of reprisal.

  15. Steven Choi is my new hero. None of you libs had any problem calling Bush Hitler but now you whine when the shoe is on the other foot. Princess Pelosi’s mommy was obviously a commie and the American people are finally finding out what the Democratic party is all about.

    • Commies rarely admit what they really stand for. The call themselves “liberals,” “Progressives” and then for additional cover, they invaded and subverted the Democratic Party. But they’re still Marxist-Leninist-Maoist *ssholes.

I’m not a Republican, but I’ve noticed that the only time the Republicans get really upset (if ever) is when the Democrats lie about them.

In contrast, what incites the ire of a communist (the so-called Democrats) more than anything? when someone points out who they really are and what they REALLY stand for.

  16. quote: “Resign your position Dr. Choi; you are not fit to serve as an elected official in Irvine. Your offensive behavior is a black eye on Irvine’s place as a city of tolerance and influence.

I’d like to place on sign on Choi’s back. One that says “Kick me. Again. Harder.'”

Is this for real? Does the author not see the irony of this statement??! “Kick me. Again. Harder.” Oh yes, you are a classic example of what passes for ‘tolerance’ in Irvine these days. This is hilarious!

  17. Let me get this straight. We let all of Senator Byrd’s Nazi comparisons about Bush slide, but an almost, completely unrecognizable Councilman exercises his rights to free speech and everyone’s got their panties in a bunch?

    http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/003963.php

Then this article’s author condones a call to violent assault replace this man’s constitutionally protected, free speech.

Let me think…violent attack on liberty…why does that sound so familiar? Nope, can’t think of anyone that wanted to use aggressive force to stomp out dissension. Oh wait…Stalin did! The author’s right. Pelosi isn’t the one like Stalin. She just wants to take away people’s freedoms at gunpoint. Anyone that doesn’t agree to governmentally mandated insurance options won’t be murdered. They’ll just be put in jail, have their lives ruined, and have no chance of being put out of their misery. That’s right. Pay for your neighbor’s abortions, or get raped in jail. That’s NOTHING like Stalin. The one who’s really like Stalin is the author! (and so is the webmaster if they delete my family friendly post)

Some of the people here act like he photoshopped Pelosi eating babies. That sounds familiar too…oh yeah. But this isn’t offensive because it’s true!~
    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JVVaXmiE24g/RqUIDsDJjsI/AAAAAAAADkE/DuFZlCAilns/s400/bush-eats-baby-small.jpg

Please don’t give me this crap about ‘but he’s a politician’, ‘higher standard’ blah blah blah. Colorful dissent is an American Tradition. Look at historical, political cartoons. They were much worse. Free Speech is the first amendment for a reason. It’s a right, especially for those you disagree with, and yes, for those that have been elected to represent us. Vote someone else in if you don’t like it.

The people certainly will in 2010 the way things are going so far.

  18. I’ll bet this really upset Pelosi, someone actually ustilizing free speech to express an opinion…we can’t have that now can we Nan? I’ll be she’s fuming over Choi actually exercising a Constitutional right.

  19. I am a pro-life democrat and I believe Pelosi has had a indirect hand in the 50,000,000 babies who have been aborted. She is not Stalin but she is no Saint either. Comparing any politician to Stalin or Hitler is ludicrous.

  20. great back sticker. pelosi is a pig. the fact that americans are even DEBATING whether or not to FORCE health care on every man and in woman is un-f%$#ing-believable.

  21. Dear Dan,
I remember when Bush was president seeing him portrayed as Hitler in full nazi regalia and as the hear no evil see no evil chimp. Were you as outraged by that as you seem to be about the comrade Pelosi poster?

    • I didn’t see that; about the wrost image I saw of the president was Bush as a vampire biting the neck of the Statute of Liberty. But that was on a t-shirt at ComicCon. I didn’t buy the shirt.

  22. If Irvine is a “city of tolerance” as you claim then why can’t you tolerate Mr. Choi’s exercise of freedom of expression?

  23. Actually I believe this gentleman is a clean example of what has made America great. It is called free speach for the weiters of this paper that call him an embarrassment are anti-free speach advocates that are the actual embarrassment, not him. You have turned our “Bill of Rights” upside down and are turning this great republic into exactly what this great man has suggested, a soviet republic that is anything but free. Bless you Steven Choi. You are a 2009 Patrick Henry. Keep up the good fight. I pray you keep trying to show these near Nazi’s, these Marxists, these Maoists exactly what they are, Stalinists in waiting. God (Yes “God”) Bless America. God bless you Steven Choi. Keep it up!

  24. i think one of the posters (Jill Kuenne) summed up liberal thought very well; “The city of Irvine is a place of tolerance and represnts all views and opinions,”
except, steven choi, or anyone else who disagrees with us.
and they don’t even see the irony.

  25. “Resign your position Dr. Choi; you are not fit to serve as an elected official in Irvine. Your offensive behavior is a black eye on Irvine’s place as a city of tolerance and influence.

I’d like to place on sign on Choi’s back. One that says “Kick me. Again. Harder.””

Your hypocrisy is astounding! You claim that Irvine is a city of tolerance yet you desire to physically attack someone because you disagree with their sign?!?! You are not practicing tolerance, but hatred! You hypocrite!

  26. Trust me majii, the FBI & Secret Service won’t be “investigating” anyone for having a protest sign on their back that doesn’t include a direct threat of some kind. Interesting that you would bring it up though. Sounds like wishful thinking to me. Majii thinks anyone who has a problem with our government’s continued slide into socialism should be investigated by the AUTHORITIES. That’s not gonna happen (yet) little man.

  27. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing; ironic in my view that a “liberal” blogger (since my hippie mom of the 60’s explained to me as a child that “liberal” means open-minded) would expect an elected official resign office simply for artistically displaying his opinion.

Not that I am in favor of any such notion for censoring politicians from “either” side of the aisle, but one does have to wonder if Mr. Chmielewski also wants “majority leader” Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) to step down over his comparison of those in opposition to a government public-option with members of the pro-slavery lobby from the nineteenth century?

“If men are to be precluded from offering their sentiments on a matter which may involve the most serious and alarming consequences that can invite the consideration of mankind, reason is of no use to us; the freedom of speech may be taken away, and dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” –

    George Washington
Address to Officers of the Army
    March 15, 1783

  28. Republican…Democrat…Bush…Obama. You guys realize that it’s all about an agenda now and that your elected officials are all working for the same team, right? The US is spiraling down the drain and people are still bickering over political parties. I’d say it’s time to open your eyes, but unfortunately it’s just too late now.

  29. Dan Chmielewski,

People can call Bush a monkey, a liar, etc. but nobody can make satire against a Democrat. Why the double standard? I wonder how people would feel if I took pictures of Obama and various pictures of monkeys to draw a comparison.

Who is going to trip over themselves to be the first person to scream RACIST.

It’s satire and it appears to me, over political correctness has finally got to you. You fail to see the comparisons and it’s hilarious to me and others: Stalin had the best of intentions for his people which resulted in the deaths of fifty million Russians and possibly more. Democrats, lately, will seem to push things that have the utmost failure in the future but will say “it’s in the spirit of things” or “atleast we tried”.

I guess that’s probably the same excuses Stalin used. Also, get a sense of humor. You’re just trying to make a big deal of nothing; much ado of nothing. You did your job, you generated traffic to your blog, and I guess “the right wing” noise machine is riling up those evil, evil Republicans

*brutal fist shake* OH NO MY CARPAL TUNNEL FROM EXCESS BLOGGING!!!!

  30. Haha…. you stupid libtards still don’t get it…LOL… You will soon enough… When the pendulum swings back to the right(and it already is)…duck….

  31. Nice to see people like Mr. Choi stand up to the faces of tyranny! Pelosi is the biggest scar on this nations history second only Obama the Messiah.

  32. Amazing how “outraged” Democrats react after their 8 years of hate spewing bile at George Bush. “Respect the office”?? Oh, you mean like the entire Pelosi/Reid/Obama crowd did when Bush was in office? The Democrat Party is indeed the new face of Fascism. Jail time or $15,000 fines for not buying their health insurance? Excuse me? WHERE in the Constitution do they have that authority? Oh…they would have to actually know what the Constitution is before they could apply it, I guess.

  33. “Your offensive behavior is a black eye on Irvine’s place as a city of tolerance and influence.” Obviously you are not a resident of Irvine, they are more tolerant and allow their politicians to have different views

  34. Good for Dr. Choi, he is only telling the truth about Progressives, they are very much like the Stalinist and in reality have very little love for the United States of America, her people, her culture or history. In a nutshell the Progressive hates the average American and we are beginning to realize that. When 58% of the people don’t want the heath care program that the Democrats are shoving down our throats that is not democracy it is fascism.

  35. What a bunch of hypocritical non-tolerant free speech oppressors here. To paraphrase one, “I haven’t seen this level of disrespect to the POTUS since JFK?” Are you s-ing me? What about all the hate speech and posters of Hitler, etc. leveled at Bush for 8 years? I am no supporter of Bush, but you are not even close to reasonable. I love seeing/reading all the whining and phony outrage here. I only came here to follow up on the crying, but tell me, was the level of outrage the same when the attacks were leveled at the tax and big government protesters, Bush, Palin, etc? Calling them Nazis, Hitler, etc? PROBABLY NOT! What a bunch of narrow minded self-absorbed free speech opponents. Don’t worry; you and your overlords will be relegated to the minority next election cycle. Come on 2010!!

  36. Hey Dan,
You don’t seem very bright. Are you so insulated in your leftist-ness that you cannot realize that Pelosi would be happy to shut you down as a writer if you ever crossed her (and she had the power)? This administration is setting up for an American coup. As soon as they can find a terrorist cell with evil plans for an attack at just the right time in 2010, they will allow the attack to occur, then declare martial law and cancel the elections. This gives BHO the jumping point to become “President for Life.” You should look around you at the current spectrum of dictators in the world (hint: some of them seem to almost worship BHO from the safety of S. America). This is EXACTLY how these nasty people gain and retain power. It’s coming to the USA. You’ll regret your allegiances very soon.

  37. Why should the Councilman be unable to express his opinion? Merely because it is not the same as yours?

Don’t be absurd. And if you really believe this, should Pelosi herself be forced to resign for calling people who protest government spending “Nazis”?

Why try to stifle creative and non-violent forms of political expression?

  38. Poor libtards, you did this for 8 years with Bush equating him with everything evil that ever happened and now you snivel over the very same free speech you enjoyed abusing for 8..well decades really. You just sit back and pour yourself a big cup of kool-aid and get down on your knees and service all the apparatchiks in your party. Poor moonbats, as your party implodes you will become more insane.

  39. Dan, your writing smacks of intolerance and borders on racism. The double standards of you and the left are laughable. Apologize to Pelosi, my ass.

    • what was racist? And what was intolerent?

When Bush came to Irvine a few years ago, our Democratic mayor met him with dignity and respect, even though she disagreed with his policies.

The Speaker comes to Irvine and Choi depicts her as Stalin.

The current mayor of Irvine, like Choi, is also Korean. With due respect, there was nothing noting Choi’s race in the post. As far as intolerance goes, I’m called a communist or a socialist on a daily basis.

As far as the “kick me” sign reference goes, it was a joke; talk about thin skins!

      • dan, I’m not going to call you racist, but you certainly display intolerance and a double standard. Pelosi’s politics are definitely Stalin like. See below (word for word from the Communist Manifesto) – I REALLY look forward to your defense of her political leaning. Everyone can PLAINLY see below where the Democratic playbook comes from (there’s NOTHING American about the the Dems).

        Communist Manifesto – Chapter 2
Nevertheless, in most advanced countries, the following will be pretty generally applicable.

        1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
        2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
        3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
        4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
        5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
        6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
        7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
        8. Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
        9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.
        10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c, &c.

I just wonder when the Dem party will actually FESS UP to what they REALLY are. Oh yeah, they can’t because they’d never win another Federal election. They’d be relegated to places like San Fran and seemingly your community. Where I’m from, Florida, there wouldn’t be a Democrat in office to be found for MILES if they admitted their true colors!

  40. I am curious to see where all these new defenders of Councilman Choi are actually from. Somehow I doubt there are from the City of Irvine, or the 70th Assembly District, or even Orange County.

    • Jacksonville Florida.

Why do you have a problem with one American sticking up for another?

We’ve got a horribly mentally ill rep in south FL named Alan Grayson. The entire state (the citizens) is in the process of running this jacka$$ out of office. Why? Because as a rep, his votes affect us all (even you). His latest outburst was to tell Dick Cheney to STFU (figure it out, I’m sure it’s in your vocabulary). YET, no one has ever heard him to tell Al Gore, the single most mentally ill person to ever hold a federal office position, to STFU. This is tame by Grayson’s standards. Where’s the respect from Grayson?

      • The implication of your and other tea party comments is that this will help councilman choi, but the residents of irvine aren’t so extreme. Irvine is very progressive. This is a local blog my friend, and Choi’s stunt will not help him in this city.

        • I see nothing progressive in the Dem party. I see old, tired soviet and European methodologies of controlling populations.

Will you define “progressive” for me?

          It’s not local anymore…

Oh, I’ve been a card carrying Libertarian for nearly 30 years now. I speak for no movement; I speak from the perspective of a Constructionist.

  41. You obviously haven’t a clue how childish and hypocritical most of you are. Kudos to ConfusedLogic. Based upon the story of Sodom & Gomorrah, he may be the “one good man” keeping California from falling into the sea. Keep it up, and the rest of the country may chip in and pay him to move.

  42. I’ll bet you were eerily silent when we saw all the “BUSHITLER” signs, t-shirts, bumperstickers, etc. A true hipocrite. Boo hoo.

        • Here is a telling exchange between Tucker Carlson and Congressman James Moran (D-Virginia):

JAMES MORAN: When is [Pres. Bush] going to show some real respect for our troops? Show us what your plan is. What is your exit strategy? It’s been five years now! How about an exit strategy, Mr. President, and those of you who support the president’s policy?

TUCKER CARLSON: And yet he’s still beating ya. I mean, he’s crushing, spanking you. You’ve gotten nowhere and he’s gotten everything he wants. Maybe it’s time to revise your strategy, don’t you think?

MORAN: Well, you know, I could take you back to the ’30s and early ’40s when there were some pretty bad people who were winning, but they weren’t running for the right cause. This is not the right cause.

          CARLSON: Comparing Bush to Hitler?

          MORAN: I didn’t say that.

CARLSON: Well I’m asking you: is that what you’re doing?

MORAN: I, I, I’m just telling you that they, ah, you can have, ah, victories one after another, but they’re not they’re not sustainable because they’re not for the right reasons.

  43. Dan,

How do you equate your tolerance with your desire to have Mr. Choi kicked and kicked again harder, labelling him offensive, and wanting him out of office?

You appear to be very intolerance and advocating violence against those you don’t approve of while wrapping yourself in a mantle of tolerance.

This strikes me as very much like what has happened and continues to happen in some countries where nazis, communists, and dicators of all sorts would propagandize how they were for the people, helping the people, all the while they were committing heinous acts of violence against people.

You seem to be in that same space from what you have written.

For me tolerance comes with peace and lack of fear. If you are truly tolerant you would want to talk to Mr. Choi, understand him a little better, and even if you didn’t agree with him you wouldn’t feel so angry and threatened by him that it makes you feel violence towards him.

What is it about him expressing his viewpoint that makes you so angry? I don’t get it, I enjoy looking at a wide number of viewpoints and talking with and have friends across the spectrum.

    • Terry — you clearly don
t know Dr. Choi; he put out a hit piece on a candidate for city council last year declaring the candidate was an Islamic terrorist when the candidate’s only sin was being Muslim. And you should have seen the protesters outside the dinner (about 100 all told) with far worse signs and suggestions of violence than my little joke about a “kick me” sign on Choi’s back. I understand Steven Choi all too well. He has every right to freedom of speech and to protest and I have every right to call him a disrespectful slug for doing so. First amendment works both ways; doesn’t it?

      • Dan, do you have a quote or any proof of the terrorist charge?

And it sort of looks like you’re defending the abdication of violence by knowing Choi.

Dude, are you in high school? Kids tend to step in their own $hit often, adults usually outgrow that behavior.

    • I like Dr. Steven Choi because he stands up for what he believes in. He is a true American. Now that he is running for Assembly, all the liberal slander of him will only help him generating more publicity. Irvine is lucky to have a leader like Steven.
I urge all voters in Assembly District 70 to vote for him.

      • Just how was Choi slandered? A picture is worth a thousand words.

Or is this the Bill O’Reilly standard of slander, where websites record what he says, and play it back with context provided.?

No one attacked Choi’s freedom to speak; we attacked what he said. If you will recall, people were arrested at Bush rallies for wearing a “no war” shirt.

    • Pelosi lacks the smarts to even know that the Nazi party was the National Socialist Party of Germany. I don’t think there’s even a debate over Pelosi’s political mindset – she’s a least a socialist, as was the ENTIRE hippie movement.

Okay, so we can debate whether she’s a socialist or a communist. She’ll NEVER fit the mold of our Founding Fathers.

  44. Healthcare needs to be protested. The Germans didn’t in the early 1900’s. We must. It’s a good real comparison that needs to be spotlighted. Choi is a true unafraid Maerican. The kind Pelosi does not like.
Bush was the persident, Pelosi is not.

  45. This is not jounalism; it’s a simple opinion piece which any 6th grader could write. Write a real piece of journalism like something on the leftest take-over of the USA. If you get paid for this kind of work then I could become a millionaire and I’m not even a jounrnalist!

    • You are an embarrassment to journalism! This article is just a cheap little shot to stir the pot with substance-less chatter.

        • And Pelosi is an embarrassment to human kind. So where do you want to stop the name calling? Has the human race devolved to nothing more to say than calling names and justifying it with “well they did it too’?

Sort of reminds me of children in the back seat… it makes for a long ride.

        • And Tom Ammiano isn’t an embarrassment to the Democratic party and mankind in general? Why shouldn’t he have to resign after heckling the Governor? DOUBLE STANDARD!!

          • I actually wrote against Ammiano’s outburst against the Governor. He should apologize to the Governor as Joe Wilson apologized to the president. No class. Do a search for Ammiano on this site and you’ll find it

        • Choi is not an embarrassment to this Republican.
I am tough and I can take it. I can even take being called a Nazi by a com-simp like Ms.Pelosi

          • I hope your not holding your breath waiting on an apology for that one from Pelosi. But if you are at least you can take comfort that the EPA won’t be along to slap a scarlet warning label on you for breathing.

      • When did Jesus advocate the slaughter of unborn children…OR refuse to let anyone mention his Father in heaven? He mentioned God quite alot WHEREVER he was and he encouraged others to as well. Liberals are only tolerant if you agree with everything they say. DARE to disagree with them about anything and just STAND BACK.

        • Jesus didn’t advocate wars aginsyt people who never attacked us. Jesus didn’t advocate torture. Jesus railed against rich people. Conservatives are selective about what’s an abomination in the Bible; enbjoy that bacon wrapped scallop appetizer and know that Levticus says its an abomination

          • They DID attack us Einstein….so I guess all your favorite liberal politicians need to give up their fortunes while they are trying to keep us from getting ours. Liberals just ignore the bible completely.

            • Iraq attacked us? When? We invaded them remember? The Taliban are a terrorist organization.

Liberals ignore the Bible completely? Really.

  46. Wonder where you were when Pelosi was calling average citizens Nazis and Harry Reid calling average citizens evil? Wonder if you called for them to resign! Hypocrite.

    • Wow Dan, doesn’t that kind of open you up to a conflict of interests? Journalists report, editorialists provide opinion. I have a few years experience in the newspaper biz, and I’ve seen journalists fired for editorializing news.

You may have opened yourself up to criminal charges (call Choi’s office and see if they’d lawyered up yet) too. You’ve broken the first amendment and you should probably at least be professionally reviewed for that transgression. You just can’t go around suggesting violence against others. Have you spoken to the OC sheriff’s office yet?

      • What criminal charges have I broken? He was in a public place; he wore his council member’s badge; he have photos. He’s even been criticized by members of his own party. I injected an opinion about the story after I reported the facts. Doesn’t Sean Hannity do the same thing? It’s not libel; he needs to prove what I wrote was false, I knew it was false and ran the story anyway. The sheriff’s office isn’t going to touch this as a First Amendment issue. If Choi wants to sue me, fine. My lawyer is Todd Gallinger, who ran against him for city council last year. I’ll be happy to counter sue.

  47. Perhaps Mr Choi should be charged with a hate crime and branded
a terrorist. Then sent to gitmo and perhaps even shot.

Free speech is a radical and dangerous act in times such as these.

Ahem, it’s not fascism when WE do it.

Kudos to Mr Choi for stating the obvious while he still can

  48. i wish i lived in Dr. Choi’s district so i could vote for him.
he seems out of place in California…the land of “fruits & nuts”.
Pelosi is living proof that over doses of Botox is harmful to your health and causes you to become a “dumbass”

  49. Good for Choi! Pelosi is a tyrant, a ruthless fascist dictator. If it were necessary for her to kill millions to implement her policies, she would do it in the blink of an eye.

It was alright for Pelosi herself to call protesting Americans “Nazis”, but this little sign has you liberals panties in a bunch? Quit whining like stuck pigs, you babies. Typical liberals, you can dish it but you cry to your mommies when someone criticizes you.

  50. With your native country devastated and separated by the Communist followings of a Stalinesque regime, I find it ironic that you would compare Pelosi to people of these tyrannical beliefs. If you are attacking socialism then reference a true socialist- but if you are aware (through your doctorate in library studies) perhaps you should look up the results of the actions of Stalin and be grateful you are in the United States- Whether you agree with Pelosi or not- her actions are not in the same vein as Stalin’s and Stalin really did not care about the healthcare of his people. Reference the conditions of the North Korean people before you start throwing stones- be aware that Pelosi is an elected official and not an appointed tyrant- you may have a doctorate in filing books- perhaps you should take the time to read one.

  51. Hey Dan! Ain’t freedom of speech just great. You get to say and do most all of the stupid stuff you want and it is protected by law.

It’s just too bad that the “freedom of speech” thing only belongs to the left. I just wish we had that right over here on the right.

  52. To equate Pelosi with Stalin is an insult to Stalin. I would equate Pelosi with Whoopi Goldnerg or that corpulent c..t Rosie O’Donnel. Fill in the blanks.
