Kurdish NGO joins UN assemblies

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A Kurdish organization will be representing the Kurdistan Region in the United Nations (UN) assemblies.

Dindar Zebari, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Committee for Monitoring International Reports told Basnews that Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) will be a member of the UN’s Economic and Social Council known as (ECOSOC) and can participate in the council’s and UN meetings.

In the UN’s Coordination and Administration meeting on April 17, a decision was made by the ECOSOC to officially recognize the BFC as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to be a member in the UN’s ECOSOC council.

Fifty-four countries have representatives in the council and 19 countries are decision-making members. Out of these countries, more than 3200 charity and non-governmental organizations have been recorded in the council. The council holds its annual meeting on April of every year.

By signing the deal, BFC can represent UN projects everywhere and take the responsibility to manage these projects. By that, the UN would be able to fund BFC’s projects and initiatives.

Peter Josh, the humanitarian adviser to the KRG,  told Kurdistan24 that “BFC is a good partner in terms of delivering humanitarian assistance and providing the necessary needs to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees coming to the Kurdistan Region. We have been doing many joint projects.”

According to its website, the ECOSOC is at the heart of the UN system to follow up on conferences and summits and to improve the three dimensions of sustainable development; economic, social and environmental. The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the UN.
