Study: Energy efficiency tax incentives spur economy, jobs

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, in collaboration with other real estate industry groups and with support from a grant from software developer Yardi, has released a  groundbreaking study on the costs and benefits of modernizing and extending the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction, commonly referred to as 179D after its U.S. Internal Revenue Code section number. The study, which was conducted by Regional Economic Models, Inc. (REMI), estimates that as many as 77,000 jobs will be created and $7.4 billion will be added annually to the national gross domestic product (GDP) if Congress passes a long-term extensio n and modification of 179D.

First enacted in 2005, 179D allowed commercial building owners to offset some of the costs of energy efficiency retrofits. Over the past decade, it became an important tool for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment. 179D was the only federal incentive for commercial building owners to improve the energy efficiency of their properties. BOMA International, a long-time supporter of the tax deduction, currently is working with lawmakers in the U.S. Congress to encourage the extension of the incentive, which expired in 2016. It also is calling for a revision of the language to expand the pool of owners eligible for the incentive and increase the deduction from $1.80 per square foot to $3.00 in order to encourage even more ambitious retrofits.

Inaugural 'Commercial Construction Index' indicates high revenue and employment expectations for 2017

Commercial construction is
in high demand across the country and contractors are confident in the trajectory of the industry, according to the USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index ('Index'). Nearly all contractors surveyed - 96 percent - expect revenues to grow or remain stable this year compared to 2016, with 40 percent expecting an increase and only three percent expecting a decrease in revenue.

The Index is a new quarterly economic indicator designed to gauge what drives the commercial construction industry and its leaders, including specific issues like backlog of work, new business pipeline, revenue projections, workforce issues, and access to financing. Given the sector's importance to the U.S. economy and the outsize role it could play in years to come, the data contained in the Index will be vital to better understanding trends, challenges and opportunities. The research was developed with Dodge Data & Analytics (DD&A), the leading provider of insights and data for the construction industry, by surveying commercial and institutional contractors.

"This first-of-its-kind Index was born out of a need to understand the issues that affect commercial construction. The Index will deliver critical insights into the future health of the industry," said Jennifer Scanlon, president and chief executive officer of USG Corporation.

ECONYL® Pure offers designers and facilities managers an infinite palette with a clear conscience

by Theresa Walsh Giarrusso

In the past, designers had to choose between using sustain-able, 10 0 percent regenerated carpet fibers for a project or achieving the perfect palest color or purest white that they envisioned with a less sustainable fiber. But not anymore.

Aquafil has taken its revolutionary ECONYL® carpet fiber even further and created  ECONYL®Pure,  the first regenerated nylon polymer so transparent and free of impurities it can be used for yarn and piece dyeing in any shade imaginable. The regenerated fiber polymer pellets are fully clean and trans-parent so even the lightest pastel shade can be achieved and reproduced over and over.
Aquafil's ECONYL Pure is the first regenerated nylon polymer so transparent and free of impurities it can be used for yarn and piece dyeing in any shade imaginable.

"The carpet industry was lacking a viable solution for space dyed yarns, which are still part of the designer's tool box, and for differential dyeing, which is still fairly popular especially in commercial applications," says Franco Rossi, president of Aquafil USA Inc. "Approximately 12 months ago we realized the caprolactam (the monomer that nylon 6 is made from) coming out of our depolymerization units in Slovenia was as clean and 'pure' as that which is made out of traditional technology. So we thought we could expand the use of it out of the solution dyed field and into something more challenging like yarn and piece dyeing."

ECONYL® Pure took Gold for Carpet Fiber in this year's Best of NeoCon competition.

Is the suburban corporate campus nearing its end?

HOK and the think tank SPUR examine in a new white paper the future of the sprawling suburban campus. From HOK:

Since their debut in the 1950s, suburban corporate campuses have come to symbolize the culture and success of U.S. enterprise. But could the era of the suburban corporate campus be nearing its end?

Moreover, given the impact these workplaces can have on both the environment and employee satisfaction, should it be nearing its end?

Those are the central questions put forth in  Rethinking the Corporate Campus, a white paper published by the San Francisco Bay Area think tank SPUR. The report looks specifically at the influence suburban campuses have had on Silicon Valley, though insights gleaned from the paper could apply to companies seeking a new corporate headquarters elsewhere.
