Technology & Data Enable Kentucky to Set State Record
for New Investment in 2016

In 2016, Kentucky won more than $3.1 billion in new investment. Approximately $951 million of that new investment came from the rural electric territories of Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives.

How did they do it?

Among other efforts, Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives partnered with Interapt, QK4 and StateBook to develop the PowerMap app to enable their representatives traveling with site selectors and company prospects in the field to use their mobile devices to quickly pull detailed economic and workforce data, social demographics, property sites and other information from StateBook to help them close deals sooner.

“By putting accurate geographic boundaries for power service territories and service lines literally into the hands of economic development professionals, PowerMap works to streamline the process of quickly analyzing and exploring the most important and costly factors of placing warehouses, assembly plants, industrial buildings, logistics, and advanced manufacturing in a defined area,” said Brad Thomas, economic developer with East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC).

PowerMap has been so successful that EKPC recently decided to upgrade it by combining drone technology from QK4 to create PowerVision, an addition that allows users to render virtual 3D structures over aerial drone footage of select sites.

Both apps integrate StateBook data for each site and help Kentucky EDOs served by Touchstone Cooperatives market their communities to more than 90 site selectors and countless companies from around the world using StateBook for site selection decision-making.

When responding to increased RFIs, they used StateBook to make a data-driven case around why their communities should win projects. In addition, their StateBook microsite was useful fo on-the-go access when a site selector or a company visited their community for a familiarization tour, ensuring all the data was available at their fingertips.
