EAST RUTHERFORD -- The Giants are set to add much-needed help to their offensive line from a rather unexpected place.
The Giants will re-sign offensive tackle Will Beatty, who they cut in February, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media. Beatty's return to the team was first reported by NFL Media's Mike Garafolo.
Beatty will receive a one-year deal that guarantees him $1.1 million, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan. Beatty can earn an additional $750,000 in incentives, according to Caplan.
The Giants are confident in second-year left tackle Ereck Flowers, despite his growing pains. He will be the team's left tackle this year. Beatty is being brought in as added depth, and could potentially push incumbent Marshall Newhouse for the starting job.
Beatty, 31, was released by the Giants earlier this year after missing all of the 2015 season. The team did not ask him to take a pay cut before they cut him, so the belief was the Giants had decided to move on from Beatty, their 2009 second-round pick out of UConn, after seven seasons.
But after failing to secure a veteran tackle in free agency this offseason despite several overtures, and seeing both the first- and second-team offensive lines struggle in the first three preseason games, whatever issues may have existed between the Giants and Beatty appear to be water under the bridge.
Beatty was the Giants' starting left tackle from 2012-14. He tore his pectoral lifting weights in May of 2015, and started last year on the PUP list. He never came off it, though, as he then suffered a rotator cuff injury on the opposite arm that required season-ending surgery.
Beatty had a few workouts this summer, and was briefly connected to the Eagles, but nothing had materialized for him until now.
