The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

It started with long conversations with my Barbie’s and progressed from there.

What was your first book/story published?

My first book was in a completely different genre. It’s called OLIVIA’S MINE and it’s historical fiction, based on true events that happened at Britannia Beach, British Columbia circa 1901. Enough mining disasters to make the BeeGees cry.

What inspired you to write NIGHTMARE ON JACEY STREET?

Nightmare on Jacey Street is the second book in the HELENS-OF-TROY series. In the first book, we learned it is not okay to love a vampire. In this book, we learn it’s never good when the dead are at your door.

What character in NIGHTMARE ON JACEY STREET is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

All three of the LaRose women are smart, witty and quite mouthy. So, I’m a little like all of them through various stages of my life. I’m in my Helena years now, if the truth be known.

What is your favorite part in NIGHTMARE ON JACEY STREET?

It’s a toss up between when Jacey doesn’t know what to do with the body parts, and when the Helens are breaking into the vet’s late at night to get the rabies serum.

What was the hardest part to write?

I think when Jacey comes to terms that there is no happy ever after.

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?

I’ve had a lot of careers. Probably the most fun one was when I worked in television. But it’s a different industry now. Everything is, isn’t it?

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

Sure. I don’t spend a lot of time pouring over them, but I like to get a general idea of the mood of the reader. I can appreciate that my books are not for everyone. It’s about finding the right audience. If you liked the Gilmore Girls and you like Buffy the Vampire slayer, then you’re probably going to like this series. If not, then probably not.

What well-known writers do you admire most?

Janet Evanovich. She cracks me up. And of course I’ve read Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Series, a.k.a True Blood. I’m also a fan of Kurt Vonnegut.

Do you have any other books/stories in the works?

Yes, the third book in the series in underway, BOUGHS OF HOLLY. I’m also starting a new series called SISTERS OF MERCY. It’s also paranormal. On another front, I hope to have PUMPER (general fiction) ready to release in the next six months.

About the Author: NIGHTMARE on JACEY STREET is the third novel completed by Janine McCaw. For the Vancouver-based novelist it is the continuation of a dream, and the fruit of years of working in a different creative realm. McCaw is also currently working on two additional books: Sisters of Mercy and Pumper.

In high demand as an insightful, humorous and engaging guest speaker, juror and analyst for festivals and trade forums around the country, McCaw also spent large amounts of time traveling abroad to television markets. Writing relieved the stress of constantly being on the road. Increasingly, she turned her main hobby into outlines for novels, and finished fleshing out the characters, plot and dialogue for OLIVIA’S MINE, a fictional account of a young bride’s struggle to make a life for herself against the backdrop of the disasters that hit Britannia Beach, British Columbia in the early 1900s. The book was released in 2006 and continues to be sold at the British Columbia Museum of Mining.

McCaw’s deep understanding of compelling plots, widely appealing characters, natural dialogue and strong story arcs comes directly out of her early career in the film and television industry. McCaw’s skills as an observer started early when her family uprooted from the City to small town Ontario – and she became the classic fish out of water. Writing down her thoughts became an outlet as she scribbled her way through childhood, while she also developed her observational skills and visual eye with photography. A die-hard hockey fan, McCaw studied Cinematography at Humber College, and was headed for a career as a cameraperson covering professional sports when she landed an internship in a broadcasting services company.

McCaw excelled in the television distribution arena. She joined Thomas Howe & Associates and moved with that company to Vancouver, where she distinguished herself with her talent for identifying the right product for the right market, and her people-skills in negotiating contracts. After furthering her professional development with several high-profile Canadian entertainment companies, she parlayed her reputation as a leading Cable Programming specialist into her own boutique firm. Formed with a partner, Dark Horse Ent. specialized in finding, and selling, niche Canadian television series - entertainment, information and variety - around the Globe.
