Then it’s time to step out and start your own business. Most people don’t start out as entrepreneurs. They choose to get work experience first. It can be a difficult and stressful time but it can be done.
Reasons to start your own business might differ. Perhaps you don’t like the idea of having a boss or you learned critical skills that enable you to be a leader in your own right. It could also be because you came up with a great idea in the normal course of working life. While having a goal is important, it isn’t always enough to move you forward. Staying motivated and having the drive during your transition from employee to entrepreneur is important.
Here are a few tips to build your business while working a nine-to-five.
Be clear on why you want to start a business
Start off by asking yourself the what and why questions. “Why do you want to start a business?” and “What kind of business do you want?” Maybe being your own boss and having financial independence motivates you. More factors that might act as motivators are the amount of time you have, the freedom you will find to work at your own pace and creative expression you’re allowed because there’s no one watching over your shoulder. Whatever your reason, knowing what motivates and drives you is what will keep you focused on your dream. Being crystal clear on why you’re doing what you’re doing will keep you committed when times get tough.
Remain positive about your daily job
Remember you’re still an employee working for someone, so you still have to make the best of it and still deliver on your job requirements. Every day you should acknowledge something appreciative about your job. Perhaps you enjoy spending time with your colleagues or always having holidays off. Maybe it’s just the free coffee or your comfortable chair. The point is to look for the good things
Join a mastermind group
This is a new concept to most people. However, a mastermind group is a peer-to-peer mentoring group that meets to support each other. This is where you’ll brainstorm ideas, find advice and work through challenges together. If you’re, for instance, not sure how to finance your business, then this is the where you can ask for help. Here you can find out how to finance equipment for your business, how to research your target market, who your competition is and so much more. This is an excellent way to help you stay accountable and motivated.
Try to upskill yourself
Research and study anything you can find relevant to your business. Look for resources that can help you with your business. The internet provides a large quantity of valuable information on building a successful business. You can take short courses or find a mentor. Make sure you have the right set of skills to run a business. You can even listen to podcasts or audiobooks while commuting to work. The more you learn about your new business and grow your professional expertise, the more confident, motivated and successful you’ll be.
Commit yourself to your goal
Having the desire or wish for something to work is different to committing to it. When you commit to your goal, you’re making a binding obligation to see it through to success. This means not quitting when obstacles and challenges arise. You find solutions when faced with these issues. A primary key to knowing you’re committed is when you’re willing to make sacrifices to achieve goals. You must find meaning and purpose in the mission you’re pursuing. Then, note that determination and commitment go hand in hand.
Set daily goals
As a potential entrepreneur, you should take small steps each day towards your business. Note that there will be times when it seems like you’re making no progress at all. Just continue setting daily goals. In the beginning, much of the work will be the usual boring day-to-day tasks. It’s all part of building a successful business. You’ll only see results by taking small steps on a daily basis. And when seeing these results, you’ll have more confidence, drive and determination to keep moving forward.
It’s sad but the majority of entrepreneurs attempting to start a business are destined for failure. So follow these six tips and make sure this doesn’t happen to you. And businesses don’t fail because entrepreneurs aren’t smart, hard working or well connected. It’s because they make just one bad decision right at the beginning when they’re getting started.
