Cultural Spaces are the places where people come together to express themselves through art and culture. We’re looking to those who know the landscape, to be a part of illustrating Vancouver’s evolving cultural spaces story.

Now until the end of June 2016, we’re opening up a simple online survey for adding spaces and providing updates. The goal of this ongoing open data project is to improve the information we publish and make it available in fall 2016 for anyone to use.

All feedback will be received by a moderator for consideration of the next version being published in the fall. Keep in mind that in order to add a space to the map, the moderator must be able to find public information such as a website, and be able to contact someone associated with the space. Office spaces are excluded for privacy reasons.

Join other developers, designers and GIS gurus who are applying their talents to our open data resource. Included are 12 data attributes that are downloadable as XLS or CSV.

Please note the dataset is current to July 2015. As a result of this annual crowdsource campaign, an updated dataset will be published in the fall of 2016.

If the dataset gives you ideas, or if you want to give us some feedback, we’d like to hear what you have to say. The project is young and we could use the input to help make it more useful and user-friendly for everyone. Use the survey below the published map to let us know.

BACKGROUND

In 2013, Vancouver City Council requested a map be published with an aim to identify local arts and cultural spaces. Council also asked that the map be shared online in order to get feedback from stakeholders and the community.

This map has assisted the City of Vancouver to support cultural spaces as described in Vancouver’s Culture Plan: Strategic Directions 2013-2018. Identifying and protecting cultural spaces is also a priority action of the Mayor’s Engaged City Task Force.
