One of my favorite talking points in recent months regarding the Sussexes is that they are somehow elitists… for eschewing palaces and royal jewels and huge staffs of stuffy courtiers. Yes, Prince Harry and Meghan now live in a big mansion in Montecito. They also meet with regular people without ten layers of protocol, and for years, they’ve both lived and worked in the real world, unlike… you know who. But sure, it’s Harry and Meghan who live in an “ivory tower” compared to… William and Kate. LMAO.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ‘fast becoming irrelevant,’ a royal expert has claimed. Speaking on Pod Save the Queen, which is hosted by Ann Gripper, Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers went on to say that the Duke, 35, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, are ‘sitting in their ivory tower, sounding off about things’, while Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 38, and Prince Charles, are speaking out on major global issues.
‘They’ve got to be careful here, sitting in an ivory tower, sounding off about things that are just coming into your head without people to advise you ‒ I don’t really know who their advisers are at the moment,’ Russell claimed. ‘It’s not coming across well and they are fast becoming a bit irrelevant, especially when you’re seeing the Cambridges and Prince Charles speaking about massive global issues like this. They’re going to be left behind a little bit.’
However, Ann Gripper did discuss how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined New York-based Harry Walker Agency, which represents the Obamas and the Clintons.
‘When you’ve signed up to be public speakers then that kind of is their role, you are public speaking,’ she explained. ‘There’s the interview that Meghan did recently – I think it was with Fortune – they pop up in this fashion, speaking over Zoom about some issue, I think it was about the Internet community and that kind of thing and making the Internet a better place. But anyway, it’s a work in progress for them.’
Yes, Harry and Meghan have taken up the well-known elitist, Ivory Tower cause of… encouraging people to vote. And they also want people to reject hate speech, and they want to make the internet safer for people, so that you can actually read news outlets without a bunch of Nazis interjecting themselves, or you can read your social media comments without being called the n-word. And note: all of these issues they’ve been working on have gotten them nothing but vitriol, rage and threats FROM the same people who are now saying they’re elitists.
Besides all of that, positioning William and Kate as having “the common touch” as compared to H&M will not work out long-term. W&K are not, um, well-known for enjoying the company of commoners or their causes.

Right. Were they saying mental health and cyber bullying aren’t global issues when Will and Kate tried to make it one of their “causes”? Was racism not a global issue when Will “slammed” the BAFTA’s lack of diversity and thought he was doing something when he said racism in football was boring him?
They are mad that people are willing to listen to these messages coming from the “irrelevant, minor” royals than from the future-futures who have repeatedly affirmed exactly why they are the last people who should be talking about mental health, after displaying their racist, bullying behaviour to the world. More and more people are waking up to what they are really like, so their attempts at “championing” mental health are falling flat. They are trying to attack Harry and Meghan’s credibility through the media because their own is shot.
I agree with this point. While W+K can keep pushing whatever PR talking points to their tabloid buddies, the real decisionmakers see how they treated Harry and Meghan, a couple who, even as separate people, were always going to be the bigger draw.
They see that while Harry and Meghan can actually speak intelligently on these issues, W+K are just blowing hot air. No substance, and behind that, contradictory behavior that organizations don’t want to be attached to.
The BM contort things/themselves so expertly, I’m surprised they don’t have side gigs in a Cirque de Soleil!

I toned down my comments on the royal family recently because . . . we all know what they are and apparently that’s what the British people want, so, that’s their problem, not mine. But this article is so ridiculous that I had to chime in too. This is like living in opposite land, utterly delusional as to reality like Donald Trump. On the one hand it’s amusing, but on the other hand, it’s scary — because this shows how people can be manipulated by playing into their prejudices, to the point that they can’t think logically or recognize reality.
A lot of the other royals “preach” too and where exactly do they live? Doesn’t the future King have 4 houses or something? A place in Wales, Clarence House, Birkhall and Highgrove. Doesn’t the Future Future King live in a house with 10 bedrooms (and that’s /just/ his country house).
If you’re going to call one of them out, call them all out.
According to research, Charles also has Dolphin House on Scilly, Dumfries House in Scotland, Castle of Mey in Scotland and Restormel Manor in Cornwall. Ironically, Restormel can be leased out when he’s not there. (Kind of makes the DM look silly for claiming that H&M’s house can be leased.) William has Anmer Hall and an apartment at Kensington and a posh helicopter. Will “preached” about Africans having too many children while Kate was pregnant with their third. He “preaches” about the environment while flying around in his helicopter and private planes and maintaining two large residences. He “preaches” about endangered species in other countries but ignores the fact that the grouse hunting the aristos do is at the expense of endangered predators in the UK. I think this nonsense is just the BM’s attempt to bring down H&M and build up the royals left behind. They seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket now with W&K since the campaign to make Sophie a star seems to have crashed. I just wonder if any but die-hard monarchists fall for this.

@BayTampaBay The info I found said that Charles and his Prince’s Foundation own Dumfries House. I didn’t figure he outright owned most of the properties. I would have thought most were crown properties maintained for his use.
Hey now, none of those homes are heated or vacuumed on a regular basis, because those are simply not things that the British upper classes do on a regular basis. So they’re cutting down on heating and electricity, which is actually very environmentally friendly if you REALLY think about it. They reuse bathwater too, just FYI, as a cost-cutting measure, in some country homes, unless the rest of us peasants, who just take exorbitantly wasteful showers every day, with brand NEW water each time. How are on-line bullying and racism not global issues? Harry is also involved with Travalyst which is actually taking action on the environment unlike William who is just waiting to award a prize to somebody else for having an idea. There were people on twitter agreeing with some post about them being irrelevant and they were too demented to see the irony of their own comments. I was thinking just how absurd this view is after seeing pictures from the documentary of William sitting in a jeep observing animals in Africa (I guess to show his his strong conservation ethic?) compared to pictures of Harry and Meghan (with both their hands on an animal) in Africa helping Game Wardens check monitoring devices. And that right there is the difference between the Cambridges and the Sussexes.
So this storyline suggesting that the Sussexes are Elitists who won’t ever get in there and get their hands dirty for Global Causes is a puzzling point when there is so much visual evidence proving the opposite.

How utterly ridiculous to say they are irrelevant when talking about them…checks notes…on a podcast and in a national tabloid. Just say you don’t have any insight or control over them anymore and go write stories about the FFQ/K. The Sussexes don’t care if the tabloids follow them. They’d like it if they truly forgot they existed, but since they sell papers, the tabs will keep them on the covers and on their pages.

So true. Most of those royal podcasts only started when Meghan married in to the family. Before her the RR only wrote about the royals in the tabloids. When Meg came on to the scene there was an explosion of royal content. Meghan especially brought the American interest that was lost when Diana passed. All of a sudden royal experts were getting appearances in American with more frequency than before. Hell, when Meghan was on maternity leave most of the podcasts went dark because they had no content without her, which is why I suspect that they abused her so heavily.
And JT someone suggested on CB the other day that the BM are unhappy that their advertising income is drying up. Apparently when Meghan wears an outfit, it breaks the internet and sells out, and the DM gets commissions for calling out designer names and driving traffic to the websites. The BM and BRF are afraid of any discussion that could lead to real action against cyber bullying because it’s the tool they use to lash those they wish to keep in line. Meghan and Harry, especially Meghan have suffered terribly from cyber bullying done by the BM at the direction, I believe of the royal family. She would be helping herself and 10s of millions of women around the world if something could be done about this. I hope this becomes like MeTo and consequences results in time over the cyber bullying of so many women and POC etc. Bullies of course don’t want to see any real action taken on this front because they may have to pay consequences for their actions.
About 90% of the bots that I saw on Instagram that trolled Meghan mentioned how wonderful Kate was, and how Meghan will be nothing like her. It’s hardly a coincidence. You can always tell that those comments were bought and paid for cos the there was always no profile pic, set to private and hardly any followers. I once saw one comment that hurled racist abuse at archie. Most of those bots praised Kate, (not William) so it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who paid for them. The Keens are the biggest cyber bullies around. I don’t know many people who would stoop so low as to pay someone to leave racist abuse at your own baby nephew.

Eg that’s why you had the Throne idle & Duchess Dolittle articles when Will& Kate were giving exclusive access to People back in 2016 & being more standoffish with them. Changed as soon as they became more ‘friendly’ to the press. Was reminded how much they carry water for the Firm when they all jumped to defend the Queen& William not wearing masks last week.
They really do opposite speak. There’s no reason for royal reporters to cover the Sussexes as they aren’t publicly funded anymore so why do they if they are irrelevant? They could pay as much attention to them as they do the York sisters (did any of them post about Eugenie’s second wedding anniversary?) so fact they dedicate so much time to them clearly shows they don’t think they are irrelevant even though they may wish that to be true. Meanwhile an actual top CEO called them some of the most influential voices.
It’s great that Charles has been ahead of the curve on the environment & that William is furthering his passion in this area. But Harry & Meghan are addressing huge issues too: systemic racism, misinformation, hate speech, online bullying, exercising your vote. A pity to discredit that in order to ‘own’ the Sussexes because your outlet has been rejected or is being sued by the Sussexes.
At the end of the day, the work that Meghan and Harry are doing, hopefully, will be the work that stands the test of time. William, Kate, and the monarchy at large, helmed by Queen Elizabeth, have put their eggs in the wrong basket. They are hedging their bets with the racist Tory contingent of their country. They see their future as reliant upon the support of these people.
I’m not an idealist who thinks that racism will die out with older generations. I also don’t think that progress is a linear march towards enlightenment. But I do think that the way people are scrutinizing racism and inequality has changed, and the manner of scrutiny is giving way to more sustainable, lasting change than it did before. There is a solid ideological foundation that it rests on.
Reactionaries, on the other hand, don’t have that. Their only philosophy is to react against anything that threatens their own privileges in society, that doesn’t serve their interests. That allows for a great deal of very destructive anger. But such anger doesn’t stand the test of time. It’s not sustainable. It’s addictive at first, then it becomes exhausting, and it winds up not resulting in very much. Certainly not the sorts of societal advantages and benefits reactionaries imagine it would. And once it’s burned out, and they have to face the truth, these people begin to eat their own.
That’s who the monarchy thinks will secure their own future. I imagine it’ll go about as well as we all think it will.
Wow, A, you write well. I read this post twice and wish I convey thoughts about the monarchy and current social atmosphere as eloquently and intelligently as you do.
It seems beyond silly to worry so much about Harry and Meghan having a platform. How many people in the world have a platform and use it for good? Those who do should celebrate that others do the same instead of trying to create competition. On important issues, shouldn’t it be the more who support the issue, the better?

Where to start?
At this point I have to wonder who they are trying to convince. Themselves? The public? Harry and Meghan? Because I REALLY don’t think Harry and Meghan give a flying fuck what they say. I think they have clear goals and plans and they are forging ahead. They also are happy and at peace with their decision. Especially now that they have settled in their new home and scored the Netflix deal that made them 100% financially independent. All strings are cut and whatever choices they make is because it’s what THEY want and not what they were told to do.
So is it the British public they are trying to gaslight into believing that Harry and Meghan are too radical and dangerous? That sticking with the old model and tradition are what they need? I feel like they are desperately trying to get the UK subjects not to become “woke” and stick with “tradition”. Is the public buying it? I’m sure your Tory types are but what about the rest of Britain that isn’t white, conservative and benefiting from classism? Or the ones who are anti-Monarchy? I can imagine that they appreciate the Sussex’s striking out on their own and making their own money. Even if they don’t agree with their “woke” positions.
It really does strike me as an effort at social engineering of the highest order. I wonder at this point if the targeting of Meghan is intended and motivated by an effort to consolidate a new sort of public consensus. The media works differently in the UK, and I definitely think the reason they pick on Meghan like this is because she is very easy target and scapegoat for all of the cultural anxieties the British have, that the Tories want to exploit and create more of to remain in power.
It explains why the press is so devoid of any sort of morals or ethics whatsoever. They do not exist to inform the public, they exist to serve the interests of the ruling class. They don’t target people because its personal, they target them because they are cast as being representative of something, a particular set of values. And tabloid journalists don’t know why people are so against them, or see them as reprehensible for their behaviour, because again, they don’t think it’s malicious because it’s not personal. They don’t see their behaviour as racism, because to them, racism is a personal choice, not a systematic problem.
It’s why the tabloid journalists and the photographers said Meghan was their favourite royal to work for, all while the people writing columns were trashing her up and down the papers. It’s why Piers Morgan genuinely thinks he could have been friends with Meghan, and still probably wants to, all while being one of the primary voices against her. They see the person, and they see the public figure and what they represent, as something different from each other, and they don’t see anything messed up with that view at all.
Meghan, and Harry, as public figures, are being singled out in the British press as representatives of a modern progressive movement. This is a movement that they are opposed to, because the establishment opposes the movement, and they are working in favour of the ruling establishment. They are targeting Meghan and Harry in an effort to rally their support base against two figures who have done nothing wrong or objectionable, but it doesn’t matter. That’s the power of symbolism. It’s all very worrying to me.
What a brilliant summation. It explains so many things that I think many of us noticed but couldn’t tie the frame entirely together. And now I’m thinking of the Queen’s recent praise of their media for accuracy in reporting (which only discredited her without making them in the least bit more credible). Yes, calling it an attempt at social engineering really doesn’t seem like that far of a stretch.

I have huge, huge questions about how the royal family stays informed on current events right now. What are their sources? What papers are they reading? How varied are the perspectives they’re taking in? It’s a well-established fact that the Queen, as well as Prince William, are not exactly the most intellectually curious types. They are not the type to really go out and seek additional sources of information for a more nuanced perspective. They are not surrounded by people who would be able to offer them any of those perspectives either. They are likely in a huge echo chamber in terms of media, and that should concern people greatly, because the information they get is what they use to make decisions. If that information is in and of itself faulty, well then, that affects their decisions.
It’s kind of alarming to think about this, but no one is immune to propaganda. Not even the royal family.
Russell Myers is the royal correspondent for the Daily Mirror, one of the four papers that the Sussexes are not responding to. Therefore, because they don’t talk to him and he can’t get any information from the palace, the Sussexes are irrelevant. People only become irrelevant when no one talks about them. His comments are coming from a place of anger and resentment.
For a couple that they claim to be irrelevant they sure as hell spend so much time taking about them . They spend every waking day reminding us of their “irrelevance”. However, it’s perfectly clear who has the worst advisors. This smear campaign has failed spectacularly for two years, perhaps some ‘advisors’ are trying to hold onto their jobs.
The Cambridges’ advisors also leak to the press.
I actually think that watching them fail and giving themselves fits is entertainment in and of itself and may be its own profit. Who cares if they look like fools to the world? They still get clicks, they still get paid, and everyone (including us) talks about their articles.
Searching on Bing for “Harry and Meghan latest news” vs “Prince William and Kate latest news” yields four time more results for H&M. On Google, there are 40 million more results showing for H&M. Does that support irrelevance?
My own privilege may be showing but I see nothing wrong with “ivory tower elitism” so I would turn those words into a compliment rather than allow it to be insulting. I think it’s great that Harry spent 2020 not only getting away from his horrible excuse of a family but also had the privilege of buying that nice ivory tower in Montecito especially during Covid.
Harry is of royal blood and while I don’t agree he should spend the rest of his life in a guilded fenced in castle prison but level of realism is needed. He can’t just go out anywhere he wants, there are people out there that will take advantage of him or try to harm him and his family. On top of that there’s Covid. As much as I’m sure these royal reporters would love for him to keel over from it, he has every right to do what he can from his Ivory Tower. I mean he has put in far more effort than his brother and sister in law in one month than they have in an entire year from that Ivory Tower.
There’s no such thing as ivory tower elitism when at least one of the people having the discussion is not an ivory tower elitist. Meghan is a victim of a racist, prejudiced society, which is perpetuated by people who actually are ivory tower elitists but are pretending not to be. It’s not exactly a compliment, but when it’s turned around on people who are historically disenfranchised by society, it’s another tool used to silence victims who want to talk about their continued dehumanization.
Kate is perfectly common but traveling by helicopter is not the common touch.

I don’t even think the original use of “ivory tower” is correct here – I thought that was more of a way to describe academics who study in theory but never apply their ideas in the real world? It doesn’t seem applicable to either couple.
I wonder if they were going to use the word “privileged” or “elitist” and then realized how ridiculous it would be to say the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, future monarchs, are somehow less privileged or elitist. Or maybe they don’t have a clue what they are talking about – also possible!
Just because white people can’t relate to a particular set of issues, or find the discussion of those issues uncomfortable (usually because it calls out their own prejudices that they’d rather sweep under the rug), doesn’t mean that the people speaking about those issues, who often happen to be people of colour, are “ivory tower elitists.”
These talking points are a part of a larger scale culture war that the right wing is waging right now, and are aimed at primarily people who are white and conservative, the types who vote Tory and support Brexit, who are “tired of experts.” They are intended to foment and then capitalize on the subsequent alienation and unfounded disenfranchisement these white people feel.
When someone like Russell Myers says H&M are not speaking out on major global issues, what he actually means is, “I, as a white person, do not understand what is so important about things like protecting a democracy, urging people to tell the truth, and taking action against racism. These things do not seem to affect me personally, therefore, I am disinterested in the discussion.” To me, it’s yet another way to say something like, “I’m bored by racism,” which puts what William said in yet another new, and incredibly unflattering context. “Why won’t those fucking brown people just shut the fuck up about racism already, it’s boring and annoying.” The sad thing is, this is a sentiment that is shared by a great many people in the UK.
They don’t characterize William as an “ivory tower elitist” because he doesn’t express support for ideas that they, personally, as white people, are uncomfortable with. It’s why they don’t consider the fact that he primarily hires and surrounds himself with what appear to be overwhelmingly public school educated, upper class, aristocrat/aristo edcuated white men to be an example of “Ivory Tower elitism” in any way–they agree with this particular variety of elitism and condescension, so it’s okay.
They don’t care when William’s “climate activism” often involves him lecturing the rest of us poor filthy, non-white peasants on how we should stop breeding, all while having three children of his own. Or when he goes around to countries that are still dealing with the economic fallout of British colonization and imperialism, lecturing them on how they need to do better about poaching, while likely still remaining on friendly terms with people who 1) support and profit from corporations that make a killing off of destroying the planet, and 2) likely fly over to those same countries to trophy hunt.
They don’t care that the Crown is not transparent about their finances, or that, as part of managing their wealth, they likely invest in companies that contribute to climate change and its denial. Or that Charles and William are routinely sent by the British Foreign Office to countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to hobknob with monarchies that commit gruesome human rights violations, because Britain has a vested interest in ensuring that it has continued access to a free and easy supply of oil. Both William AND Charles were photographed alongside Mohammed bin Salman, helping lend credibility to a tyrant that hired a PR firm to polish his international reputation, all to support a reliance on fossil fuels that’s destroying the planet (so much for climate activism).

Thank you!! There is honestly so much more I wanted to say, especially about the sorts of people the royals keep company with, not many of whom happen to be lily white and pure as the riven snow. And I think there is so much more that goes unsaid regarding how the royal family is used by the British govt as a way to, again, build strategic geopolitical relationships, that goes unsaid. Especially with countries like Saudi Arabia. I know people have questioned the idea of them being a “soft power” in terms of diplomacy, but the fact is that their visits to these other places do carry a certain amount of weight and that doesn’t get talked about or dissected in a real way.

A, I make it a point to catch Celebitchy Everyday. I have read some of the most honest and thoughtful posts regarding the Sussex and the good they do. We know the projects they get involved with are really of genuine interest to Harry and Meghan (the so called irrelevant one’s) They are honestly trying to make a difference in a good way. Harry was the last of the real humans amongst the senior royals, the rest of them are just spinning their wheels and looking like a group of racist, entitled people. @Pat, I wish Meghan could say that too!! I feel bad for her. I feel like she’s not even angry, just bewildered and kind of sad about how it all went down, and concerned about her husband and child. I really think she was willing to stick it out and make it work, no matter what, but Harry is the one who saw the toll it was taking on her, on the both of them, and decided to nope tf out of there, asap.
I doubt it was the first time she was in that position as a biracial woman, where she had every right to be angry, but had to choose not to be, because she knew that she had to behave with some grace, otherwise, she’d be referred to as the “angry black woman”, no matter how justified her anger was. It’s depressing to think about the indignities she had to swallow and keep quiet about.
Not to mention the guilt she must be feeling. I know if I were in her position, I’d feel like that, like I’d ruined my husband’s life, taken him away from his family and country, even though she didn’t do anything. It’s just a reflex so many woc have in their lives, I think, to take responsibility for how others perceive and react to them. I’d be beating myself up and asking myself if I didn’t do enough, somehow. But she did plenty. It was not her responsibility to please a group of people who could not be satisfied with her. But again, I think WOC internalize so much guilt over this, because that is what we’re used to–taking responsibility for how others react to us and our existence.
I’m glad Harry stepped up for her. He’s like the embodiment of, “He’s confused, but he’s got the spirit,” I feel. I don’t think he was all that woke, but that’s not important. He let his compassion and his love for his wife guide him first and foremost, and that is an incredible thing to do. You can have all the knowledge in the world about injustice, but if you don’t have compassion for your fellow human, what’s it worth?
