Prince Harry & Meghan accused of Ivory Tower elitism, as compared to Will & Kate

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit Bondi Beach

One of my favorite talking points in recent months regarding the Sussexes is that they are somehow elitists… for eschewing palaces and royal jewels and huge staffs of stuffy courtiers. Yes, Prince Harry and Meghan now live in a big mansion in Montecito. They also meet with regular people without ten layers of protocol, and for years, they’ve both lived and worked in the real world, unlike… you know who. But sure, it’s Harry and Meghan who live in an “ivory tower” compared to… William and Kate. LMAO.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ‘fast becoming irrelevant,’ a royal expert has claimed. Speaking on Pod Save the Queen, which is hosted by Ann Gripper, Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers went on to say that the Duke, 35, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, are ‘sitting in their ivory tower, sounding off about things’, while Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 38, and Prince Charles, are speaking out on major global issues.

‘They’ve got to be careful here, sitting in an ivory tower, sounding off about things that are just coming into your head without people to advise you ‒ I don’t really know who their advisers are at the moment,’ Russell claimed. ‘It’s not coming across well and they are fast becoming a bit irrelevant, especially when you’re seeing the Cambridges and Prince Charles speaking about massive global issues like this. They’re going to be left behind a little bit.’

However, Ann Gripper did discuss how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined New York-based Harry Walker Agency, which represents the Obamas and the Clintons.

‘When you’ve signed up to be public speakers then that kind of is their role, you are public speaking,’ she explained. ‘There’s the interview that Meghan did recently – I think it was with Fortune – they pop up in this fashion, speaking over Zoom about some issue, I think it was about the Internet community and that kind of thing and making the Internet a better place. But anyway, it’s a work in progress for them.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Yes, Harry and Meghan have taken up the well-known elitist, Ivory Tower cause of… encouraging people to vote. And they also want people to reject hate speech, and they want to make the internet safer for people, so that you can actually read news outlets without a bunch of Nazis interjecting themselves, or you can read your social media comments without being called the n-word. And note: all of these issues they’ve been working on have gotten them nothing but vitriol, rage and threats FROM the same people who are now saying they’re elitists.

Besides all of that, positioning William and Kate as having “the common touch” as compared to H&M will not work out long-term. W&K are not, um, well-known for enjoying the company of commoners or their causes.

This is so ridiculous that it has actually become entertaining.

    • I pet goat 2 says:

Absolutely. It’s actually funny because it’s so damn absurd.

    • Myra says:

Right? The day I will take a Daily Mirror writer seriously…

    • PEARL GREY says:

Right. Were they saying mental health and cyber bullying aren’t global issues when Will and Kate tried to make it one of their “causes”? Was racism not a global issue when Will “slammed” the BAFTA’s lack of diversity and thought he was doing something when he said racism in football was boring him?

They are mad that people are willing to listen to these messages coming from the “irrelevant, minor” royals than from the future-futures who have repeatedly affirmed exactly why they are the last people who should be talking about mental health, after displaying their racist, bullying behaviour to the world. More and more people are waking up to what they are really like, so their attempts at “championing” mental health are falling flat. They are trying to attack Harry and Meghan’s credibility through the media because their own is shot.

      • Lemons says:

I agree with this point. While W+K can keep pushing whatever PR talking points to their tabloid buddies, the real decisionmakers see how they treated Harry and Meghan, a couple who, even as separate people, were always going to be the bigger draw.

They see that while Harry and Meghan can actually speak intelligently on these issues, W+K are just blowing hot air. No substance, and behind that, contradictory behavior that organizations don’t want to be attached to.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

The BM contort things/themselves so expertly, I’m surprised they don’t have side gigs in a Cirque de Soleil!

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

They’re all too drunk for that. It would be a hazard.

      • FicklePickle says:

Even if they did, Cirque du Soleil laid off 95% of their employees and filed for bankruptcy this year, so they’d still be increasingly desperately pimping their failing publications and crying into their beers about all the money that ‘poor dumb’ Harry and ‘Showgirl’ Meghan were SUPPOSED to make them.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I toned down my comments on the royal family recently because . . . we all know what they are and apparently that’s what the British people want, so, that’s their problem, not mine. But this article is so ridiculous that I had to chime in too. This is like living in opposite land, utterly delusional as to reality like Donald Trump. On the one hand it’s amusing, but on the other hand, it’s scary — because this shows how people can be manipulated by playing into their prejudices, to the point that they can’t think logically or recognize reality.

  2. Sofia says:

A lot of the other royals “preach” too and where exactly do they live? Doesn’t the future King have 4 houses or something? A place in Wales, Clarence House, Birkhall and Highgrove. Doesn’t the Future Future King live in a house with 10 bedrooms (and that’s /just/ his country house).

If you’re going to call one of them out, call them all out.

    • equality says:

According to research, Charles also has Dolphin House on Scilly, Dumfries House in Scotland, Castle of Mey in Scotland and Restormel Manor in Cornwall. Ironically, Restormel can be leased out when he’s not there. (Kind of makes the DM look silly for claiming that H&M’s house can be leased.) William has Anmer Hall and an apartment at Kensington and a posh helicopter. Will “preached” about Africans having too many children while Kate was pregnant with their third. He “preaches” about the environment while flying around in his helicopter and private planes and maintaining two large residences. He “preaches” about endangered species in other countries but ignores the fact that the grouse hunting the aristos do is at the expense of endangered predators in the UK. I think this nonsense is just the BM’s attempt to bring down H&M and build up the royals left behind. They seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket now with W&K since the campaign to make Sophie a star seems to have crashed. I just wonder if any but die-hard monarchists fall for this.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Charles also owns a holiday home in Romania.

Charles does not personally own Dumfries House. Dumfries House is owned by “The Great Steward of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust”.

      • equality says:

@BayTampaBay The info I found said that Charles and his Prince’s Foundation own Dumfries House. I didn’t figure he outright owned most of the properties. I would have thought most were crown properties maintained for his use.

    • A says:

Hey now, none of those homes are heated or vacuumed on a regular basis, because those are simply not things that the British upper classes do on a regular basis. So they’re cutting down on heating and electricity, which is actually very environmentally friendly if you REALLY think about it. They reuse bathwater too, just FYI, as a cost-cutting measure, in some country homes, unless the rest of us peasants, who just take exorbitantly wasteful showers every day, with brand NEW water each time. So clearly, they have EVERY RIGHT to lecture to us on how to combat climate change. /sarcasm

  3. equality says:

How are on-line bullying and racism not global issues? Harry is also involved with Travalyst which is actually taking action on the environment unlike William who is just waiting to award a prize to somebody else for having an idea. There were people on twitter agreeing with some post about them being irrelevant and they were too demented to see the irony of their own comments. If somebody is irrelevant, nobody even bothers to comment or read about them. Also highly amusing how the ones still wanting “commoners” to bow down to them aren’t considered the elite ones by this moron.

    • Osty says:

      This 👍👍

    • Louise177 says:

It’s the funniest thing that the media and haters keep calling them irrelevant yet they can’t stop talking about them. I have never seen such irrelevant people get so much attention. It’s mind blowing that so many articles are written about their house and what Meghan is wearing.

  4. janey says:

I love that photo of Kate tossing her hair like the show pony she is…

  5. Snuffles says:

They just keep digging in their heels shrieking “this is how you are SUPPOSED to act! How dare you do anything without consulting us!”

Too late peeps, they are reveling in their freedom and thriving.

    • Yvette says:

@Snuffles … Exactly! Their panties are in a bunch because they no longer have any control over what the Sussexes do. “We don’t know who is advising them!” No ‘you’! 🙂

    • Dierski says:

That’s exactly what I keep thinking @Snuffles – “Too late, you salty royals!!” Lol

    • Amy Too says:

They seem to be flabbergasted by the fact that Harry and Meghan have their own independent thoughts and ideas, values and ideals, and they speak because they want to. This article is very hand-wringing about “who is even advising them!?” “Are they just advising themselves!? *gasp shock*” Apparently ever other Royal only ever speaks on the issues they’re told to care about by their advisors. How is that making the royals seem MORE relatable or MORE trustworthy and caring?

  6. lanne says:

Oh yes, those royals, down with the people–living in PALACES with gold pianos and racist paintings on their walls. mmmhmm. No elitists here!

    • Becks1 says:

RIGHT?!?!?!? The more the RRs beat this drum – that Harry and Meghan are elite and out of touch, as opposed to the working royals – the more out of touch they look. Sure, they are speaking to a specific audience, but overall catering to that audience just results in the royals themselves become more irrelevant.

      Also, what global issues???

    • molly says:

      Literal PALACES! Plural! PALACES!!
I also loooove when bitter people complain about how “irrelevant” Harry and Meghan are becoming. Umm hmm. Sure, Jan. Keep dreaming as you yourself make the media rounds talking about them every single week.

  7. Harla says:

So it appears that Russell didn’t even listen to Meghan’s talk with Fortune but he still has an opinion on it?! This is exactly what Meghan was talking about on Teenager Therapy, people just making shit up and spouting it like it’s the word of God. I’m so tired of it😕

  8. Sarah says:

But these are not the issues the courtiers tell them to address with the scripts prepared by said courtiers so it is WRONG.

We are fully into emerald city propaganda territory and while the internet causes many many issues and wrongs in society today, it is also helping more people see beyond the propaganda.

  9. Emily says:

As a UK taxpayer, I’m a lot more interested in the “ivory towers” that I’m actually paying for.

Also lololololololol at the claim that Will and Kate have been saying anything even remotely useful about “massive global issues”.

  10. Belli says:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ‘fast becoming irrelevant,’ royal experts claim in their fiftieth article about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry so far this week.

“The Duke, 35, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, are ‘sitting in their ivory tower, sounding off about things’, while Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 38, and Prince Charles, are speaking out on major global issues.”

^^ That is hilarious. If you’d told me it came from a parody article, I’d believe you.

Meghan and Harry talk about the importance of voting, mental health and anti-bullying.

Meanwhile William mumbles about environmental platitudes and how it affects him, himself and his children and Kate has never spoken out about anything in her life.

Also, Harry’s 36 (not knowing that Google exists or trying to exaggerate the age difference?)

    • Midnight@the Oasis says:

“Irrelevant” people don’t host Time 100 events or guest speak at Fortune conferences. The British Media, Royal Reporters and Royal Courtiers need to stop their insanity but we know they won’t. The “irrelevant couple” are the only interesting ones.

    • HeatherC says:

It’s a sad but true commentary when most news articles, from Trump to the royals, sounds like it came from The Onion first.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I think if Meghan & Harry are “Irrelevant” then they are only “Irrelevant” to people of the UK as the rest of the work finds them somewhat interesting as they still continue to magazines newspapers and books worldwide. LOL!

    • Yvette says:

I was thinking just how absurd this view is after seeing pictures from the documentary of William sitting in a jeep observing animals in Africa (I guess to show his his strong conservation ethic?) compared to pictures of Harry and Meghan (with both their hands on an animal) in Africa helping Game Wardens check monitoring devices. And that right there is the difference between the Cambridges and the Sussexes.

So this storyline suggesting that the Sussexes are Elitists who won’t ever get in there and get their hands dirty for Global Causes is a puzzling point when there is so much visual evidence proving the opposite.

The British press are also deliberately forgetting that Harry had a birthday last month and is now 36 years old.

      • RoyalBlue says:

William needs to stop. His interest in the great continent begins and ends wtih Jecca. JeccaKenyaJecca.

    • bluemoonhorse says:

It comes across like a Trump speech. Trump always says someone else is doing what he is really doing. This is saying they are doing something that someone else is doing. Backwards land.

      • Lizzie says:

I’m not the puppet, your the puppet. LOL

      • BnLurkN4eva says:

Well it has been working so well Trump, perhaps the BRF and the BM decided they better get on that. We are really living in upside down world and I just wish it could be turned right side up again.

  11. godivalady says:

all of this is just another way to say that they think a Black woman is “uppity”. God i hate these fking people.

    • Yvette says:

@Godivalady … Uppity and doesn’t know her place (which is one of the things a Kensington Palace Courtier said about her … she doesn’t know her place). I still can’t believe Kate and William were okay with the KP staff treating Meghan like she was beneath the staff in the Royal pecking order.

  12. JT says:

H&M are so irrelevant that the BM has about 30 articles a day on them, generating thousands of comments in a few hours. The RF and BM wish that the Sussex’s were irrelevant. Harry and Meg’s Teenager Therapy podcast has over a million views in two days, while Will’s stupid Ted talk barley got 60,000. These royal reporters are projecting the irrelevance of the royals on to H&M, hoping if they repeat it often enough it will be true. I’m so sick of the bullsh*t narrative that W&K are commoners. They live in a goddam palace! They need to stop with this storyline because if they are so damn common why do the British public have to pay for them?

    • equality says:

Most commoners don’t fly about in their own helicopter either.

    • Midnight@the Oasis says:

I don’t know of any commoners who use helicopters as their personal mode of travel.

    • HeatherC says:

So irrelevant that DM still has tabs devoted to Harry and Meghan on their website.

      • equality says:

They are still on the royal.uk website also. Meghan has charities listed that she supported since before being a royal while Kate has only royal patronages listed.

    • RoyalBlue says:

“Harry and Meg’s Teenager Therapy podcast has over a million views in two days, while Will’s stupid Ted talk barley got 60,000.”

Oooh that’s got to burn them. These are the metrics that count and ought to be reported.

  13. TheOriginalMia says:

How utterly ridiculous to say they are irrelevant when talking about them…checks notes…on a podcast and in a national tabloid. Just say you don’t have any insight or control over them anymore and go write stories about the FFQ/K. The Sussexes don’t care if the tabloids follow them. They’d like it if they truly forgot they existed, but since they sell papers, the tabs will keep them on the covers and on their pages.

And last I checked, the Sussexes were dealing with issues that are relevant to them: online bullying, voting, sustainable travel, women’s rights.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

The irony is that these rota rats and experts don’t realise that the more mud they sling, the more material they are giving H and M to build their empire. Watch and weep rats, watch and weep.

  14. S808 says:

This is just them propping up the toys they have left cause they have nothing else to compare M&H against. If W&K step out of line they’ll say that those 2 are “preaching” too. Part of being preached to is listening so if they’d simply ignore H&M there wouldn’t be a problem. But you can’t do that when you actually need them huh?

Speaking of making internet a safer place, I love that H&M are making a humane digital landscape a huge part of Archewell after everything Meghan has been through online. She couldn’t fight back against the abuse before but now she can thank god.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I actually think the Windsors are quite comfortable doing nothing. They’re freaking out because they fear Harry spilling all of their dirty secrets. They think they can abuse him back and the royal reporters know damn well without Harry they will have to report on the actual scandals within the family.

  15. Merricat says:

To think they thought Meghan would drag them down in the eyes of the world, but it turns out that they are degrading themselves by insisting on their racist colonialist “traditions.” Say goodnight, monarchy.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

Yeah, they were so terrified for FF because they were so certain that Meghan especially was behind it and was going to reveal all she endured in those awful royal palaces. Except, they never knew this woman because if they did they would know that’s not her style, (sometimes I wish it was.) She’s not looking back, or bothering to try and get even because to her that would be wasting her energy on negativity, which only leads to more negativity. If they really knew Meghan she wouldn’t feel like such a threat to them. With Meghan all I see is someone who wants to use whatever platform available to her to do some good and live a nice life with her family.

  16. fluffy_bunny says:

OMG! WTH is going on in that photo of Kate? She looks ridiculous. If M&H are irrelevant than please stop talking about them.

  17. equality says:

Interesting how these “royal experts” only interview with people who nod their head and agree. I’d like to see them in an interview with a real journalist who would ask them pressing questions.

    • Osty says:

I have read posts from at least 2 pple who said they were asked to lie, insult and troll the sussex before their interviews. I believe it’s a requirement to be nasty, see the Sussex as evil and RF good to be allowed in those talk shows

  18. RoyalBlue says:

These reporters are so ridiculous. If they’re so irrelevant why are they the subject of the podcast?!!

If you ask the reporters what do the royal family cost you they will say 67 pence, and if you ask them what harry and meghan cost they will say 2.4 million for frogmore. what they say is not logical and they need to be called out more for this crap.

    • JT says:

So true. Most of those royal podcasts only started when Meghan married in to the family. Before her the RR only wrote about the royals in the tabloids. When Meg came on to the scene there was an explosion of royal content. Meghan especially brought the American interest that was lost when Diana passed. All of a sudden royal experts were getting appearances in American with more frequency than before. Hell, when Meghan was on maternity leave most of the podcasts went dark because they had no content without her, which is why I suspect that they abused her so heavily.

      • RoyalBlue says:

And JT someone suggested on CB the other day that the BM are unhappy that their advertising income is drying up. Apparently when Meghan wears an outfit, it breaks the internet and sells out, and the DM gets commissions for calling out designer names and driving traffic to the websites. Now they are losing their cash cow.

      • JT says:

@Royalblue it’s probably one of the reasons why Kate is morphing into Meghan(other than Kate not having a personality.) I wouldn’t be surprised if the BM have been getting on Kate to dress more like Meghan because coat dresses and fugly fascinators don’t sell. Meg’s modern style is more bankable because people actually wear it.

  19. Elizabeth Regina says:

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I laugh in mud slinging desperation. These royal experts should just give it up. Wasn’t Willileaks telling all of us to care for the environment despite him having one of the highest carbon foot print in that family? Another pathetic attempt which will end up making Harry and Meghan more money.

  20. Abena Asantewaa says:

This is how jealousy works, you become oblivious to your own hypocrisy. William and Kate preach from their 20 bedroom Palace or The huge Amner hall stately home, with as much personality as a dishwater! The DM and the rotten rota, will be the downfall of W&K. It is a case of; ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’. Cyberbullying and trolling leads to death; it is a massive global issue, and millions would be grateful for this discussions by H&M.

    • KW says:

Hey I love my dishwasher. It’s quiet and knows it’s job. And it does more in 35 minutes than Will and Kate have done in months.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

The BM and BRF are afraid of any discussion that could lead to real action against cyber bullying because it’s the tool they use to lash those they wish to keep in line. Meghan and Harry, especially Meghan have suffered terribly from cyber bullying done by the BM at the direction, I believe of the royal family. She would be helping herself and 10s of millions of women around the world if something could be done about this. I hope this becomes like MeTo and consequences results in time over the cyber bullying of so many women and POC etc. Bullies of course don’t want to see any real action taken on this front because they may have to pay consequences for their actions.

      • February-Pisces says:

About 90% of the bots that I saw on Instagram that trolled Meghan mentioned how wonderful Kate was, and how Meghan will be nothing like her. It’s hardly a coincidence. You can always tell that those comments were bought and paid for cos the there was always no profile pic, set to private and hardly any followers. I once saw one comment that hurled racist abuse at archie. Most of those bots praised Kate, (not William) so it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who paid for them. The Keens are the biggest cyber bullies around. I don’t know many people who would stoop so low as to pay someone to leave racist abuse at your own baby nephew.

      • equality says:

@February-Pisces I have suspected for a long time that Kensington paid followers because they can do the most mundane things and get heaped on praise for it like it was something spectacular. I can get admiring somebody but there is overdoing it

      • Nic919 says:

The KP followers has been stuck at 12 million for several months. Coincidentally around the time the Sussexes shut down their IG account.

  21. Snuffles says:

They just keep talking to themselves in an echo chamber. They refuse to reflect, refuse to compromise and refuse to accept they made a mistake.

They think if they keep repeating the same talking points, that Harry and Meghan are “irrelevant” and that William and Kate are doing everything the “right way” that people will believe them.

So, UK peeps, do you think it’s working? Because I can only speak for what I’m seeing in America and the public and American press are lapping up every thing the Sussex’s are doing while side eyeing that musty old institution.

    • L4frimaire says:

I don’t even see why they even need to talk about what the Sussexes even do over here. The work they are trying to build is very different from how the royals work, hence the “ political” label. As for being in Ivory towers or elitists, whatever. Before they weren’t “royal” enough, too Hollywood, so I guess they’re moving up and being taken more seriously, lol. Even if they decided to be food bloggers or art dealers, so what? They don’t work for the BRF anymore. As someone said upthread, if the UK is happy with the way the other royals, especially W&K work, that’s fine. It’s their country and monarchy, and they seem fine with that system. However, that has nothing to do with how the Sussexes work and it’s no longer their concern or tax burden.

  22. ABritGuest says:

Royal reporters are like Fox News/ MAGA types. They are so unprofessional& very catty & personal with their ‘reporting’.

They are a propaganda arm of the Firm & only seem to provide ‘scrutiny’ to the Firm’s scapegoats or when members aren’t playing ball with them. Eg that’s why you had the Throne idle & Duchess Dolittle articles when Will& Kate were giving exclusive access to People back in 2016 & being more standoffish with them. Changed as soon as they became more ‘friendly’ to the press. Was reminded how much they carry water for the Firm when they all jumped to defend the Queen& William not wearing masks last week.

They really do opposite speak. There’s no reason for royal reporters to cover the Sussexes as they aren’t publicly funded anymore so why do they if they are irrelevant? They could pay as much attention to them as they do the York sisters (did any of them post about Eugenie’s second wedding anniversary?) so fact they dedicate so much time to them clearly shows they don’t think they are irrelevant even though they may wish that to be true. Meanwhile an actual top CEO called them some of the most influential voices.

It’s great that Charles has been ahead of the curve on the environment & that William is furthering his passion in this area. But Harry & Meghan are addressing huge issues too: systemic racism, misinformation, hate speech, online bullying, exercising your vote. A pity to discredit that in order to ‘own’ the Sussexes because your outlet has been rejected or is being sued by the Sussexes.

    • A says:

At the end of the day, the work that Meghan and Harry are doing, hopefully, will be the work that stands the test of time. William, Kate, and the monarchy at large, helmed by Queen Elizabeth, have put their eggs in the wrong basket. They are hedging their bets with the racist Tory contingent of their country. They see their future as reliant upon the support of these people.

I’m not an idealist who thinks that racism will die out with older generations. I also don’t think that progress is a linear march towards enlightenment. But I do think that the way people are scrutinizing racism and inequality has changed, and the manner of scrutiny is giving way to more sustainable, lasting change than it did before. There is a solid ideological foundation that it rests on.

Reactionaries, on the other hand, don’t have that. Their only philosophy is to react against anything that threatens their own privileges in society, that doesn’t serve their interests. That allows for a great deal of very destructive anger. But such anger doesn’t stand the test of time. It’s not sustainable. It’s addictive at first, then it becomes exhausting, and it winds up not resulting in very much. Certainly not the sorts of societal advantages and benefits reactionaries imagine it would. And once it’s burned out, and they have to face the truth, these people begin to eat their own.

That’s who the monarchy thinks will secure their own future. I imagine it’ll go about as well as we all think it will.

      • BodegaBay says:

Wow, A, you write well. I read this post twice and wish I convey thoughts about the monarchy and current social atmosphere as eloquently and intelligently as you do.

  23. equality says:

It seems beyond silly to worry so much about Harry and Meghan having a platform. How many people in the world have a platform and use it for good? Those who do should celebrate that others do the same instead of trying to create competition. On important issues, shouldn’t it be the more who support the issue, the better?

  24. Feedmechips says:

I guess voting and racism aren’t global issues?

  25. Rae says:

    Where to start?

  26. Snuffles says:

At this point I have to wonder who they are trying to convince. Themselves? The public? Harry and Meghan? Because I REALLY don’t think Harry and Meghan give a flying fuck what they say. I think they have clear goals and plans and they are forging ahead. They also are happy and at peace with their decision. Especially now that they have settled in their new home and scored the Netflix deal that made them 100% financially independent. All strings are cut and whatever choices they make is because it’s what THEY want and not what they were told to do.

So is it the British public they are trying to gaslight into believing that Harry and Meghan are too radical and dangerous? That sticking with the old model and tradition are what they need? I feel like they are desperately trying to get the UK subjects not to become “woke” and stick with “tradition”. Is the public buying it? I’m sure your Tory types are but what about the rest of Britain that isn’t white, conservative and benefiting from classism? Or the ones who are anti-Monarchy? I can imagine that they appreciate the Sussex’s striking out on their own and making their own money. Even if they don’t agree with their “woke” positions.

    • A says:

It really does strike me as an effort at social engineering of the highest order. I wonder at this point if the targeting of Meghan is intended and motivated by an effort to consolidate a new sort of public consensus. The media works differently in the UK, and I definitely think the reason they pick on Meghan like this is because she is very easy target and scapegoat for all of the cultural anxieties the British have, that the Tories want to exploit and create more of to remain in power.

It explains why the press is so devoid of any sort of morals or ethics whatsoever. They do not exist to inform the public, they exist to serve the interests of the ruling class. They don’t target people because its personal, they target them because they are cast as being representative of something, a particular set of values. And tabloid journalists don’t know why people are so against them, or see them as reprehensible for their behaviour, because again, they don’t think it’s malicious because it’s not personal. They don’t see their behaviour as racism, because to them, racism is a personal choice, not a systematic problem.

It’s why the tabloid journalists and the photographers said Meghan was their favourite royal to work for, all while the people writing columns were trashing her up and down the papers. It’s why Piers Morgan genuinely thinks he could have been friends with Meghan, and still probably wants to, all while being one of the primary voices against her. They see the person, and they see the public figure and what they represent, as something different from each other, and they don’t see anything messed up with that view at all.

Meghan, and Harry, as public figures, are being singled out in the British press as representatives of a modern progressive movement. This is a movement that they are opposed to, because the establishment opposes the movement, and they are working in favour of the ruling establishment. They are targeting Meghan and Harry in an effort to rally their support base against two figures who have done nothing wrong or objectionable, but it doesn’t matter. That’s the power of symbolism. It’s all very worrying to me.

      • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

What a brilliant summation. It explains so many things that I think many of us noticed but couldn’t tie the frame entirely together. And now I’m thinking of the Queen’s recent praise of their media for accuracy in reporting (which only discredited her without making them in the least bit more credible). Yes, calling it an attempt at social engineering really doesn’t seem like that far of a stretch.

      • A says:

Thank you! Also, I had not heard that the Queen had praised the media for its accuracy. I can’t help but wonder if that comes as a reaction to Harry’s own advocacy for better, more honest, reporting, and his efforts to combat misinformation campaigns on social media.

I have huge, huge questions about how the royal family stays informed on current events right now. What are their sources? What papers are they reading? How varied are the perspectives they’re taking in? It’s a well-established fact that the Queen, as well as Prince William, are not exactly the most intellectually curious types. They are not the type to really go out and seek additional sources of information for a more nuanced perspective. They are not surrounded by people who would be able to offer them any of those perspectives either. They are likely in a huge echo chamber in terms of media, and that should concern people greatly, because the information they get is what they use to make decisions. If that information is in and of itself faulty, well then, that affects their decisions.

It’s kind of alarming to think about this, but no one is immune to propaganda. Not even the royal family.

  27. Amy Bee says:

Russell Myers is the royal correspondent for the Daily Mirror, one of the four papers that the Sussexes are not responding to. Therefore, because they don’t talk to him and he can’t get any information from the palace, the Sussexes are irrelevant. People only become irrelevant when no one talks about them. His comments are coming from a place of anger and resentment.

  28. Osty says:

For a couple that they claim to be irrelevant they sure as hell spend so much time taking about them . They spend every waking day reminding us of their “irrelevance”. And if the really believe it they should stop talking about them and concentrate on the “popular, relevant and charismatic” couple they have . Aka the drad four and ford fiesta

  29. Lizzie says:

‘They’ve got to be careful here, sitting in an ivory tower, sounding off about things that are just coming into your head without people to advise you ‒ I don’t really know who their advisers are at the moment,’
This is everything about Cambridge’s and Sussex’s. The Cambridge’s employ advisors to direct everything they do, the Sussex’s lead from their own vision. However, it’s perfectly clear who has the worst advisors. This smear campaign has failed spectacularly for two years, perhaps some ‘advisors’ are trying to hold onto their jobs.

    • Amy Bee says:

The Cambridges’ advisors also leak to the press.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I actually think that watching them fail and giving themselves fits is entertainment in and of itself and may be its own profit. Who cares if they look like fools to the world? They still get clicks, they still get paid, and everyone (including us) talks about their articles.

  30. equality says:

Searching on Bing for “Harry and Meghan latest news” vs “Prince William and Kate latest news” yields four time more results for H&M. On Google, there are 40 million more results showing for H&M. Does that support irrelevance?

  31. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

My own privilege may be showing but I see nothing wrong with “ivory tower elitism” so I would turn those words into a compliment rather than allow it to be insulting. I think it’s great that Harry spent 2020 not only getting away from his horrible excuse of a family but also had the privilege of buying that nice ivory tower in Montecito especially during Covid.

Harry is of royal blood and while I don’t agree he should spend the rest of his life in a guilded fenced in castle prison but level of realism is needed. He can’t just go out anywhere he wants, there are people out there that will take advantage of him or try to harm him and his family. On top of that there’s Covid. As much as I’m sure these royal reporters would love for him to keel over from it, he has every right to do what he can from his Ivory Tower. I mean he has put in far more effort than his brother and sister in law in one month than they have in an entire year from that Ivory Tower.

    • A says:

There’s no such thing as ivory tower elitism when at least one of the people having the discussion is not an ivory tower elitist. Meghan is a victim of a racist, prejudiced society, which is perpetuated by people who actually are ivory tower elitists but are pretending not to be. It’s not exactly a compliment, but when it’s turned around on people who are historically disenfranchised by society, it’s another tool used to silence victims who want to talk about their continued dehumanization.

  32. Lizzie says:

Kate is perfectly common but traveling by helicopter is not the common touch.

  33. Mignionette says:

Lol back to the uber right wing silencing points then.

When you can’t win the debate just gaslight the other side in silence by shaming them. Reminds me of the article about the Obama’s home in Martha;s Vineyard.

Yet more trash for the poorer gammons to eat up now that power is slipping from their hands.

  34. Nic919 says:

There is no way the family that gives itself ribbons for tolerating adultery and wear stolen jewels is in any way not completely out of touch themselves.

  35. Jessica says:

The British media have caused me to despise the Royal Family. This is all so idiotic and asinine.

  36. Vanessa says:

I think a lot of these so called royal experts truly believe that Harry and Meghan would fail they believe the own narrative that they created for Harry and Meghan. I think it shocked to their very core that the two royal that they deem irrelevant are successfully . It’s crazy how these reporters keep screaming about how unimportant Harry and Meghan are yet. These reporters spend days daily writing about them constantly making up stories about them so they can sell papers.

  37. What’s eating you says:

Oh please this is just a classic case of white people being triggered by seeing a non white person living well, it’s a tale as old as racism.

    • lanne says:

That’s why they keep bringing up how many bathrooms their house has. Royals and royal Reporters: How DARE they live well without us! WE’RE supposed to be the source of all largess, and WEE should be able to dictate how well the Sussexes live.
Come back, Harry and Meghan, so we can tell you what to do and how to live your lives!

Come back Meghan so maybe we really can bully you into a miscarriage this time!

Come back so that we can throw you guys under the bus to support your older brother!

Come back so that we can criticize any work that you do, Meghan, and attribute your hard work to Kate’s influence.

Come back so that we can put down Archie, and monitor him for how dark/not dark he may become!

Come back so that we can prove that the Cambridge toddlers are much, much better than Archie!

Come back Meghan so that we can deny you access to the royal jewels!

Come back, harry and Meghan, so maybe we can bully you into letting us into your house, and then we’ll criticize your decor and your standard of living!

Come back Meghan so that you can be our Marie Antoinette, and we can blame you when Brexit goes bad!

Come back Harry, so we can criticiize you for being dragged about by your harpy wife and mesmerized by her exotic DNA!

Come back so that we can tell you, over, and over, on no uncertain terms, that you will NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH! and YOU’LL NEVER LIVE UP TO OUR FF KING AND QUEEN!!

Now who could resist an invitation like that???

Come back so we can destroy you.

      • Jane's Wasted Talent says:

Indeed. They’re a cadre of sociopaths.

    • bettyrose says:

Yep. In the U.S., it’s just a day ending in Y when an old establishment white dude gets call “normal” while young people working hard to make meaningful change get called elitists. Guess we probably learned that shite from the Brits many moons ago.

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

It’s also seeing the scapegoat leave and thrive. The one that was left to take all the punches in the fights the heir starts. Blamed for everything and has to work twice as hard for half the good press. They’re angry they no longer have that as well.

And maybe deep down they’re mad they’re stuck with w and k. The to dull royals they’re supposed to embiggen endlessly while all they produce is scandals to be ignored. Scandals that would actually bring in huge viewership.

  38. L4frimaire says:

All of this is just so ridiculous. The wheels seem to be falling off the country but these UK reporters are firmly in Montecito. So heave traded Hollywood for Ivory Towers as an insult. They really can’t handle the fact that they look amazing, are actually out there making a living like they said they would, and focusing on issues that they didn’t while working royals. So instead they insult them, doctor photos and show once again how unprofessional and vindictive the British media.

  39. Case says:

LOL really? All I’ve ever seen is W&K doing the minimum while H&M get out there all the time and do the work for things they’re passionate about. Hardly sitting in an ivory tower. I don’t understand these royal commentators.

  40. Bloemheks says:

“They’ve got to be careful here, sitting in an ivory tower, sounding off about things that are just coming into your head without people to advise you ‒ I don’t really know who their advisers are at the moment,’ Russell claimed

They can’t do this without us! They NEED us! My Gawd. Of course, they have advisers. The difference? H&M chose and pay them directly. They aren’t assigned to them by the RF to act as spies, don’t leak to the press, and don’t play petty games.

    • A says:

And their advisors aren’t overwhelmingly Eton educated, Oxbridge graduated, Tory Brexit supporting middle-aged white men either.

Because, as any fule kno, the mediocre white man brigade as represented by those people are the exact OPPOSITE of ivory tower elitism, right? /sarcasm

  41. Liz version 700 says:

Will who laughs at delivery men for being pummeled by his elite security guards. Kate who hates women unless they are genetically related and not naturally tan… the hero’s of the common folk. This really is getting pretty funny. Monarchs hate voting because they still want to boss people around due to their accident of birth. Nothing more common than that snort.

    • A says:

Kate, whose mother was born in a council house, who same mother subsequently spent her whole life disparaging and hiding her commoner roots, in order to be accepted by a group of people who genuinely wouldn’t think twice if people in council homes were starving, or left to die, because they want to privatize the NHS and want to cut social benefits even further. Who, in fact, joke about poor people dying, all the time, behind closed doors.

And the point about how monarchs hate voting is especially salient. It’s alarming that the BRF has essentially aligned themselves in opposition to voter enfranchisement. What they’re saying is that they don’t care about voter suppression. They don’t care about a functioning, healthy democracy. For a group of unelected, inbred idiots, whose wealth was built on the backs of millions of poor, disenfrachised people both in the UK and around the world, to essentially down against democracy in this way? They shouldn’t even be talking about this. There should be no possible way that anything they do or say could be construed as such. They should firmly and openly assert democratic principles, because doing that, or at least paying lip service to those ideals, is what keeps them in their jobs.

The fact that they’re not basically says to me that they don’t care because they truly believe they should be lording it over the peasants, and none except the richest and wealthiest land holders in the country should get a say, and we should all return to feudalism. If they don’t mean that, well then, why don’t they say so? The absence of their clear stance on this could be incredibly dangerous, and the fact that they don’t care about that says all I need to know about where their priorities are.

  42. Jay says:

I don’t even think the original use of “ivory tower” is correct here – I thought that was more of a way to describe academics who study in theory but never apply their ideas in the real world? It doesn’t seem applicable to either couple.

I wonder if they were going to use the word “privileged” or “elitist” and then realized how ridiculous it would be to say the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, future monarchs, are somehow less privileged or elitist. Or maybe they don’t have a clue what they are talking about – also possible!

  43. A says:

Just because white people can’t relate to a particular set of issues, or find the discussion of those issues uncomfortable (usually because it calls out their own prejudices that they’d rather sweep under the rug), doesn’t mean that the people speaking about those issues, who often happen to be people of colour, are “ivory tower elitists.”

These talking points are a part of a larger scale culture war that the right wing is waging right now, and are aimed at primarily people who are white and conservative, the types who vote Tory and support Brexit, who are “tired of experts.” They are intended to foment and then capitalize on the subsequent alienation and unfounded disenfranchisement these white people feel.

When someone like Russell Myers says H&M are not speaking out on major global issues, what he actually means is, “I, as a white person, do not understand what is so important about things like protecting a democracy, urging people to tell the truth, and taking action against racism. These things do not seem to affect me personally, therefore, I am disinterested in the discussion.” To me, it’s yet another way to say something like, “I’m bored by racism,” which puts what William said in yet another new, and incredibly unflattering context. “Why won’t those fucking brown people just shut the fuck up about racism already, it’s boring and annoying.” The sad thing is, this is a sentiment that is shared by a great many people in the UK.

They don’t characterize William as an “ivory tower elitist” because he doesn’t express support for ideas that they, personally, as white people, are uncomfortable with. It’s why they don’t consider the fact that he primarily hires and surrounds himself with what appear to be overwhelmingly public school educated, upper class, aristocrat/aristo edcuated white men to be an example of “Ivory Tower elitism” in any way–they agree with this particular variety of elitism and condescension, so it’s okay.

They don’t care when William’s “climate activism” often involves him lecturing the rest of us poor filthy, non-white peasants on how we should stop breeding, all while having three children of his own. Or when he goes around to countries that are still dealing with the economic fallout of British colonization and imperialism, lecturing them on how they need to do better about poaching, while likely still remaining on friendly terms with people who 1) support and profit from corporations that make a killing off of destroying the planet, and 2) likely fly over to those same countries to trophy hunt.

They don’t care that the Crown is not transparent about their finances, or that, as part of managing their wealth, they likely invest in companies that contribute to climate change and its denial. Or that Charles and William are routinely sent by the British Foreign Office to countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to hobknob with monarchies that commit gruesome human rights violations, because Britain has a vested interest in ensuring that it has continued access to a free and easy supply of oil. Both William AND Charles were photographed alongside Mohammed bin Salman, helping lend credibility to a tyrant that hired a PR firm to polish his international reputation, all to support a reliance on fossil fuels that’s destroying the planet (so much for climate activism).

But oh no, Meghan said something abt how people should vote and campaign against misinformation on social media. How DARE the biracial black woman presume to lecture white society on injustice, doesn’t she know that it should always be the other way around?! Won’t she just shut up and understand that white people in Britain are just BORED of her LECTURING ON ZOOM about racism?! Ugh, what a self-serving, narcissist. /SARCASM

Thank you!! There is honestly so much more I wanted to say, especially about the sorts of people the royals keep company with, not many of whom happen to be lily white and pure as the riven snow. And I think there is so much more that goes unsaid regarding how the royal family is used by the British govt as a way to, again, build strategic geopolitical relationships, that goes unsaid. Especially with countries like Saudi Arabia. I know people have questioned the idea of them being a “soft power” in terms of diplomacy, but the fact is that their visits to these other places do carry a certain amount of weight and that doesn’t get talked about or dissected in a real way.

A, I make it a point to catch Celebitchy Everyday. I have read some of the most honest and thoughtful posts regarding the Sussex and the good they do. We know the projects they get involved with are really of genuine interest to Harry and Meghan (the so called irrelevant one’s) They are honestly trying to make a difference in a good way. Harry was the last of the real humans amongst the senior royals, the rest of them are just spinning their wheels and looking like a group of racist, entitled people. That includes the old selfish racist Liz and her walking cadaver of a husband. The inbreds truly have issues. I do wonder how they get an entire group of countries to believe their BS and fund their lifestyle. The Americans that hate the Sussex are majority white Trumper fans, other than that the Majority could care less about the Sussex stepping away or like me they are happy they got out and can hardly wait for their Netflix projects to come out. I don’t think Meghan would ever say this to them but I wish she could tell them to F### off and put their lips on her ass along with a side of “ Go to Hell”!. That includes the old bag in the palace. I hope All of the commonwealth countries that she is the sovereign of leave the commonwealth. They are All Simply Vile and Evil people just like the BM and many of the BP. As one of Many American voters we are kicking Trump’s racist mentally unstable Ass out of office on November 3rd. He and Boris and the rest should move to Putin land. I sincerely hope the monarchy is Abolished forever, the people should decide if the monarchy continues.

      • A says:

@Pat, I wish Meghan could say that too!! I feel bad for her. I feel like she’s not even angry, just bewildered and kind of sad about how it all went down, and concerned about her husband and child. I really think she was willing to stick it out and make it work, no matter what, but Harry is the one who saw the toll it was taking on her, on the both of them, and decided to nope tf out of there, asap.

I doubt it was the first time she was in that position as a biracial woman, where she had every right to be angry, but had to choose not to be, because she knew that she had to behave with some grace, otherwise, she’d be referred to as the “angry black woman”, no matter how justified her anger was. It’s depressing to think about the indignities she had to swallow and keep quiet about.

Not to mention the guilt she must be feeling. I know if I were in her position, I’d feel like that, like I’d ruined my husband’s life, taken him away from his family and country, even though she didn’t do anything. It’s just a reflex so many woc have in their lives, I think, to take responsibility for how others perceive and react to them. I’d be beating myself up and asking myself if I didn’t do enough, somehow. But she did plenty. It was not her responsibility to please a group of people who could not be satisfied with her. But again, I think WOC internalize so much guilt over this, because that is what we’re used to–taking responsibility for how others react to us and our existence.

I’m glad Harry stepped up for her. He’s like the embodiment of, “He’s confused, but he’s got the spirit,” I feel. I don’t think he was all that woke, but that’s not important. He let his compassion and his love for his wife guide him first and foremost, and that is an incredible thing to do. You can have all the knowledge in the world about injustice, but if you don’t have compassion for your fellow human, what’s it worth?

    • BodegaBay says:

This is why I’ve been saying DON’T BUY THIS BOOK. It’s a rehash of tabloids stories with some dose of anti billy and chuck. I believe the writer is working with ex staff like Christopher Geidt to settle some scores but it’s mostly anti Meghan and Harry. The idiot probably thought with the end of the crown that this anti Meghan book will help him get work with these tabloids by being overtly racist and double standards towards the Sussexs

  45. Well-Wisher says:

Thankfully the royal ‘specialists’ has failed to define the Duchess of Sussex in terms of the white imagination as a collective. It seems that a lot of well meaning individuals refuse to buy into the notion of – Meghan is,was, did etc………fill in the blank.
So they keep plugging and have not included Harry since he seems indifferent to their “irrelevant ” comments and musings.

The last public disagreement in RF was the dissolution of the Wales marriage. Both parties pleaded their case for different purposes, both failed. The only winners were the media and book publishing industry.

The market is different now, media ownership is more concentrated and there are hacks and gossips in the Royal Rota instead of journalists. Notably the changed market place and the brothers differing expectations and approaches towards it and the the RR. There is one side on the record and no response to dignity it. So onward with the churlish name calling as the interest continues to wane. Far less people are buying newspapers in the UK.
