The Sound Canvas app allows musicians to relive the 90s with an iOS version of Roland’s classic MIDI sound modules.

Not to be content with bringing back the TR-808, TR-909 and TB-303 in contemporary form with its AIRA range last year, Roland is reviving another piece of music production history with its new Sound Canvas app.

First launched back in the 1990s with the SC-55, the Sound Canvas line gave producers a basic synthesis engine loaded with instrument patches and effects, ranging from basic square waves through to digital recreations of brass instruments. Despite falling out of favour as computer VST instruments became more popular, Roland evidently think there’s enough nostalgic appeal in Sound Canvas’ early 90s muzak-esque sounds to revive it for iPhone and iPad users.

Sound Canvas for iOS comes loaded with 1600 sounds and 63 drum sets, and is available now from the App Store at a price of £10.99/$14.99. Watch the video below for an outline of its features.
