Copyright Terminations and Legacy Catalogues: What Publishers are Missing

Copyright terminations and catalogue acquisitions are two of the hottest topics in the music industry right now.  While the media focuses on multi-million dollar mega-deals, there is an entire category of catalogues that get overlooked – not only by the press, but also by many publishers.  Join this informative panel in their discussion on those often ignored catalogues, alternative strategies to handling terminations, what publishers are missing and how they can maximize success with these catalogues.

Miles Feinberg is founder and president of Music Rights Group, a rights management and advisory firm specializing in the brokerage of music rights. An experienced music publishing executive and copyright attorney, Miles previously served as EVP at Music Sales Corporation (now Wise Music), where he headed their Los Angeles office and oversaw legal, business affairs, copyright, and licensing departments. Additionally Miles works as an adjunct law professor and teaches "The Music Publishing Industry" at Southwestern Law School, which was recognized by The Hollywood Reporter in its list of The Top 10 Entertainment Law Schools in 2019. He is currently a member of AIMP (Association of Independent Music Publishers), CCC (California Copyright Conference), CSUSA (Copyright Society of the USA), ELIPS (Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property Section) and The Recording Academy (GRAMMY).

Peter Raleigh is a founding co-owner and partner of Raleigh Music Group and a 20-year music industry veteran who served as Director of Copyright Administration both at Cherry Lane and BMG/Chrysalis, and subsequently as VP Copyright & Catalog Development at Imagem Music Publishing North America. His knowledge of copyright reversions and terminations has enriched the estates of Elvis Presley, George Gershwin, Cy Coleman, George David Weiss, Sammy Cahn, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein II. Raleigh is a frequent guest lecturer at law firms on understanding statutory terminations, reversions, and planning against the erosion of copyright assets. Raleigh is a graduate of Fordham University.

Erin M. Jacobson, is an internationally recognized attorney, experienced deal negotiator, and a seasoned advisor of intellectual property rights who protects musicians, songwriters, music publishers, and a wide variety of other music professionals. Ms. Jacobson’s clients include Grammy and Emmy Award winners, legacy artists and catalogues, heirs and estates, and independent artists and companies. Ms. Jacobson regularly handles all types of agreements within the music industry, with an emphasis on music publishing, licensing, and catalogue acquisitions. In addition, she is one of the leading attorneys on copyright recapture and termination issues. Ms. Jacobson also places special emphasis on her work with legacy clients and their catalogues, as her knowledge of both classic music and current industry practices places her in a unique position to protect and revitalize older catalogues. Ms. Jacobson has been named as one of the “Top Music Lawyers” by Billboard, as well as a Super Lawyers Rising Star and one of the Top Women Attorneys in Southern California. In addition, Ms. Jacobson is a frequent author and speaker, and has been featured in publications including Billboard and Forbes, and on networks including ABC and the BBC.
