Aston Martin’s former chairman is set to buy a stake in a company that makes flying cars, which he believes could soon appear in Britain’s skies.

David Richards, the motorsport guru who spearheaded the 2007 buyout of James Bond’s favourite marque from Ford, is investing in a Slovakian company, AeroMobil, and has joined its advisory board. He is acquiring a single-digit percentage stake via his Oxfordshire racing and technology company, Prodrive.

The venture was conceived in the 1980s by students Stefan Klein and Juraj Vaculik, who are still the majority shareholders. The latest prototype has been undergoing test flights since 2014.

AeroMobil says it will begin taking orders next year for the car, which has retractable wings and will be priced at less than €1m
