AKRON, Ohio -- Two people were uninjured early Monday morning in a house fire, a spokesman with the fire department says.

However, the fire caused enough damage that the unidentified females and their many pets, including two dogs, 10 cats and a snake, have been displaced, Akron Lt. Serjie Lash says.

The fire was reported at 3:40 a.m. on the 900 block of Kennebec Avenue, which is east of Ohio 8 and south of Ohio 261.

Firefighters say there were flames and smoke coming from the garage and basement when they arrived, and that they had difficulty getting to the house because it was on a dead-end street with limited access.

The fire was under control at 4:04 a.m.

The Red Cross is assisting the two women.
