Post hurricane Katrina, new FEMA elevations were released, placing some homes along the Tete Bayou in flood zones, requiring home owners to buy flood insurance.

Since that time the city of New Iberia along with Iberia parish officials, teamed up to clean Tete Bayou and adjusts the flood way. New Iberia Mayor Pro Tem, Dan Doerle says after engineers surveyed the water way, their findings were encouraging. In an effort to increase water flow in Tete Bayou, parish officials built a bridge to replace concrete culverts, which allows water to flow and drain faster, lowering the possibility of flooding.

Doerle says engineers with Fenstermaker believe the changes should make a difference to flood zones, now those residents must wait on a decision from FEMA.
