The People's National Party (PNP) has expelled controversial activist Karen Cross with immediate effect.
The decision was taken at Monday evening’s meeting of the party’s executive committee and came after months of trying to get the social media blogger to toe the party line.
In a statement following the meeting the party said: "The Executive Committee of the People's National Party, having received and considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee, and in accordance with Section 260 of the Party's Constitution, expelled Karen Cross from the party with immediate effect”.
The statement did not offer any reason why Cross was booted from the party which has been roiled by internal conflict for several years.
Cross currently has a case before the court after she was sued for defamation by the PNP’s General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell, having made serious allegations against him which have not been substantiated. She was ordered by the court to pay Campbell $750,00 or serve six months in prison after she continued to publicly make claims about Campbell despite being told to desist from doing so.
She was summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee in June but refused to attend, insisting that Campbell should also attend. The committee met in her absence and forwarded its report to the party’s executive which, ultimately determined Cross’s fate on Monday.
The outspoken activist has also criticized the leadership of PNP President and Opposition Leader Mark Golding. Following recent public opinion polls which show both Golding and the party badly trailing Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Jamaica Labour Party, Cross led a “take back our party” demonstration at PNP headquarters last Thursday.
