Six Cleveland police recruits were sent to the hospital during training in Columbus in mid-December, according to records obtained by News 5.
Five of the recruits returned to duty the same day while one suffered a dislocated shoulder.
“To our knowledge, the recruits were injured during a scheduled training exercise,” said Cleveland Police Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia.
The training is conducted at the State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus. The incident occurred on Dec. 12.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Robert Sellers, the training involved “dynamic testing,” which allows officers to use self-defense techniques they learned in training. Supervisors are present, along with a staff doctor and complete medic unit from Columbus Fire & EMS, Lt. Sellers said.
Lt. Sellers said the six recruits were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
“All six recruits were also required to see our academy physician the following morning, which is normal procedure for any injury,” Sellers said.
All of the recruits were released to full duty and graduated the following week.
