United Kingdom - Sexual violence: What use is the law?

About the event

Despite widespread international attention and condemnation, sexual violence in armed conflict remains pervasive. At this event, organised with the Chatham House International Security and International Law programmes, the panel will explore the role of international humanitarian law (IHL) in banning and criminalizing sexual violence in armed conflict, examining the IHL framework and its relationship to human rights law. They will stress the importance of understanding the complex legal framework surrounding this issue, in order to respond effectively to the needs of victims of sexual violence.

The audience is expected to include those working in the area of sexual violence in conflict and gender-based violence from government, NGOs, academia, armed forces and embassies.
